I'm about 70% sure that when Mintz orchestrated the whole takeover of Oswald from Walt to him and Universal, that it took ownership of not just the characters (and animators who signed over), but also the actual shorts that they had already made. I don't have the Your Host DVD yet, so I haven't seen the interview. But it would make sense for Walt to not want to show them (or try and get them back). He wasn't really one to keep looking "back" all the time. I mean, yes, he'd often show the older cartoons and stuff in the Disneyland series and Mickey Mouse Club, as well as re-releasing them in theatres. But rarely would he go and "tweak" something that he wasn't happy with initially, or that he got a "better" idea for later on. I think he accepted that Oswald wasn't his, and basically figured, "Even though I have the means to get him back now, what would I do with him?" After all, by the 1960s his plate was full. Adding yet another character to the roster would be a bit much, which is likely why we saw the gradual decline of characters like Clarabelle and Horace, and of course, Mickey himself. Once their story and marketing appeal begin to wane, it's often hard to bring it back. And if Walt had recovered Oswald in the 60s, it'd have been 40 years since his last "Disney" appearance, and he'd essentially be a stranger to most people.

Wow, talk bout not being able to pick your battles, guess I would've done the same thing if I had a character taken from me and I didn't know how the money part of showbiz works. You're right bout Oswald being a total stranger to the public who are familar with Mickey/Co. when I heard bout a character name Oswald was coming home to Disney, I was like....Who's Oswald? a new character then they showed an old '20s film with him and I appericated him more. Now if only Disney brings out the merchindise with Oswald on 'em then I'll probaly buy them. When are they gon'na release that anyways?

Don't know about the US, but I'm pretty sure Oswald's one popular little bunny over in Japan. I vaguely recall discussion of Oswald merchandise that's still big over there.

Really? wow, how interesting, are they the same 1920s style or modern? I'd go for the orignal look, it's hard seen him modernized after so many years of not seeing him with Mickey/co.

I'm pretty sure it's the 1920s style. I'll have to dig up the UD thread that talked about it one of these days.

ETA: Found the thread, but it's actually about the US merchandise!

More Oswald Merchandise Announced

I'm sure it was citing this article:

The "Oswald deal" taught Walt one lesson: from then on always keep ownership of one's own material and characters.

It appears the only reason for Disney re-attaining the rights to Oswald were for the Epic Mickey Video Game

I'm not sure if this is true - its possible, even though the game will have been in "development" if not actual coding for a good few years.

Somehow I'm not surprised. Why would they buy Oswald unless they had plans to profit off of him somehow?

Either way, I'm glad the company owns Oswald, considering he was a piece of Walt's history.

Agreed. And regardless of their intentions in purchasing the character (or trading for him), the most important thing to me is that they released all of the shorts that still exist and that a fair amount of merchandise was made. I have a figure of Oswald on my desk and a t-shirt, both of which came from Disney Store.

I seriously doubt that. The game was already in development before Disney got the character back. And even if they did get the rights because of the game it was likely down on the list of reasons to get Oswald back.

I would like to start out this HUGE boot of a thread by congratulating myself on successfully finding it through the search engine (which has always been something hard for me to do here lol).

Now I'll move on to the real reason I'm posting! Guess who I found hanging around The Disney Store yesterday!

Thats right! The Disney Store currently has a Oswald plush!!!! When I talked to a cast member working at the store last night, I informed her how thrilled I was to happen upon it. She told me that the store only received one bag of them (so roughly 10), and that they had been selling really well. In fact, I got one of the last 2 they had at that location. Oswald was $16.99 and I was able to also get a Tiana plush for a friend of mine because they also have a buy one plush get one free sale for any plush in the store. If you're interested I would head to a Disney Store soon or here's a link to it from DisneyStore.com.

Unfortunately this was the only Oswald related merch in the store. But I did find this long sleeve Oswald shirt from DisneyStore.com!

http://www.disneystore.com/shirts-cloth ... rch_oswald

Back when Disney re-acquired him and The Disney Store got some merch, I assumed he would become a staple character. Now I wish I would've picked a lot more of that stuff when it was available. That's why I was so excited to find him as a plush! :)

A few years ago The Disney Store also had a Clarabelle Cow plush that I wish I would've picked up too. Since then I haven't seen anything related to her either. That gave me another good reason to pick up Oswald immediately.

Don't worry about the search engine. I don't think it's working properly right now - doesn't allow you to search by thread title. I can never get it to find what I'm looking for even though I do know there are threads on topics I'm looking for. I think Luke mentioned there's a glitch.

yeah, after being a member of the forum for 6 years I don't think I had ever been able to work the search engine properly lol. I'm just super proud that I was able to find this thread as easily as I did. I literally sat back and thought to mysef... "I wonder if this is how Escapay (among others who are always so capable) feels" haha

I kind of totally want that Oswald plush. I don't collect them and have no room for them anyway, but I really like that one for some reason (and I'm not even that huge a fan of Oswald, either). Maybe I'll get it online since there isn't a Disney Store anywhere near me.

As soon as I saw him online in January, I had to get him. I had 0 "official" Disney plush and 0 Oswald merch, but Epic Mickey got me excited and pretty much anything Oswald is a rare commodity. I highly recommend the plush; I love his ears! :D He's also a goodly size and made of very soft material. I paired him with the Steamboat Mickey Plush, which I believe is no longer in stock?
