To those who have seen Lion King in its theatrical re-release or who are informed about it, which version of the movie is it? Original, IMAX, or DVD (with Morning Report)?

Not sure of whether it's the IMAX, or Original......However I CAN OFFICIALLY CONFIRM THAT THEY DON"T INCLUDE THE MORNING REPORT SONG

I didn't see the 2D showing, but if they added the song, that would be a slap in the face I think

Jeffrey Harris: Do you want to comment on Kimba The White Lion at all? Was there an influence or inspiration to the story at all?

Rob Minkoff: You know, that's a great question. It must have come through -- I don't know, it must have come through osmosis because it was never, never discussed as a reference point for many of the people working on the movie. So I'm not sure if it sort of found its way through people's childhood memories. I think Kimba was a show that was on the air pretty early . . . I remember when we were finishing the film, someone brought it up and said, "Do you know what Kimba The White Lion is?" And of course I was like, "Yeah. But what is it?" I remember it was [Osamu] Tezuka. I remember Astro Boy a bit better. But when we saw it, they were like, "Oh my god. There are so many similarities." So I don't know exactly how --

Disney said “The Lion King 3-D” was not a test; even if it goes well the studio does not plan on routinely converting other beloved films in its library to the format and rereleasing them in theaters. A Disney spokeswoman said the 3-D release was more of a way to keep an aging film fresh while allowing a new generation of children to experience it in theaters.

Disney will change their minds after the weekend. It's opening to over $20 million and land at number 1.

They could easily re-release Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin next year. September is a dead month at the Box Office anyway, the market for kids films is a wide open space. There is literally nothing out for them right now.

The re-animated crocodiles are such an eyesore. I don't mind the waterfalls but the crocodiles look atrocious.

Anyways, I'm gonna see it sometime between Sunday and Wednesday with my younger brother and older sister.

Is there any chance I can wait until The Lion King 2 and The Lion King 1.5 come out in their own separate packaging? Because I already paid a lot to buy the Star Wars saga on Blu-ray, and I wanna get all three movies in The Lion King trilogy. Just.... not all at the same time in its pricy set.

9 million on the first day of a movie RE-released is a hefty amount. It will bring in over 20 million this weekend and be in the top spots of the box office. It going to make close to what Pooh made in its entire run in only the first three days. It's doing fine..

And yeah, there is a good chance they'll release the sequels individually next year.

WOW.

1. It's on track for $30 million+, challenging the September opening weekend record set by Sweet Home Alabama in 2002.

2. It's already the most successful re-release since Star Wars in 1997

3. Its lifetime domestic total will fly past Finding Nemo (already done), the $400 million mark (most likely) and it will challenge Toy Story 3 (if they extend its run beyond 2 weeks).

4. Projections and tracking had it coming in at #2 with estimates ranging from $9 to $15 million. As of writing this it's already passed that mark and it's not sunday yet.

5. What more do you want? It's in only 2,300 theaters. The theater average for this film will go over $10,000. That is HUGE.

You really should inform yourself and read up on what Box Office Mojo or other sites are writing before making such a ridiculous claim. This opening weekend will outgross the Princess and the Frog's opening weekend by $10 million. By sunday, it will have eclipsed Winnie the Pooh's entire worldwide Box Office earnings... And keep in mind... this is a 17 year old film.

The Lion King 3D is a major success beyond any prediction.

I went to see the Lion King 3D yesterday with the family... and I can certainly say that it looked amazing! I felt like I was watching it all over again!!! I was 2 years old when Lion King came out for the first time.

I'm not sure why people are overreacting when he said "it doesn't sound like"--meaning he clearly didn't know. It's not like he was a professional making a post on a blog, so I don't see any "claims" being made here.

I've noticed the commercials for this, but I haven't checked to see if any theaters nearby are playing it. If it is playing at the theater I normally go to, I'll see it, but I doubt it'll be there.

Just got back. Worst theater experience in recent memory.

Lets get the good out of the way. The 3D looked great to me, no complaints there really. Its nice to finally see something hand drawn in 3d. Sure I've seen cardboard cutout style hand drawn 3D, but its hardly the same. Also cool to finally see the movie on the big screen again. Digitally projected no less. (I never saw it in IMAX) It was weird (but cool) hearing people laugh at parts that were meant to be funny. Imagine that? I've seen the movie so many times, humor is something that doesn't register with me anymore seeing classics like this. I tend to focus on the visuals, then plot/characters.

Now the bad. Lets start with the theater itself. I'm pretty sure the projector was dimmer than usual. I see a lot of 3D, I realize that the glasses dim the colors anyway, but they were unusually dim this time. Not since Bolt have I seen the picture this dim. Also, something was off with their sound system. I'm guessing the rear channels were either not on or very low. for instance when Zazoo flys by past the camera singing "This child is getting wildly out of wing" the sound is supposed to travel from the front to the back. meaning instead of hearing "wiiiing" we only heard the "weeeee" part. Bass also seemed lacking. when James Earl Jones lacks a certain umph you know something has gone wrong.

The audience. I probably brought this on myself going to a 7:00 showing, but they were horrible. 4 crying babies were taken out. You had a number of adults quoting lines as they were being said, as well as singing. "Shhh! Dad your embarrassing me" a little boy was heard saying. You also have a number of people who had never seen a 3D movie before, reaching their hands out in front of them. C'mon, its not even That 3D idiots.

Back to the movie itself, I didn't care for a lot of the hue shifts Disney felt compelled to throw in. Maybe since I've seen see the 3D and 2D blu ray comparison shots they stood out to me more, but I don't like cloud Mufassa being purple instead of blue, or Simba in certain parts toward the end being more yellow than than orange. I'm also pretty sure the shots of Simba chasing rafiki were much bluer originally. In fact one of my earliest movie memories was seeing the Lion King in theaters, and that was one of only a few shots I feel like I remember quite vividly. And it didn't feel quite right here. Not that I'm suggesting my memory from that far back is reliable or anything, but the DVD is probably bluer as well.

I also noticed a lot of focal effects were removed or minimized. I realize this is an issue with 3D, they say focal blur doesn't work well in 3D, but some shots suffered imo when you remove/lessen this effect. the zebra shot with the tree in the foreground is the first thing that comes to mind. some others too. I would like to see a comparison myself to see if I agree with filmakers that 3D and focal blur doesn't mix.

It may shock some of you to hear that even as an advocate of 3D I think the movie works best in 2D. They did a great job for the most part though. And I'm not sure how much of this is colored by the other unnecessary changes they made that may or may not have a lot to do with the 3D conversion. Seeing it at a better theater and quieter audience might change my opinion though.

Too funny but yeah, consider this: Ponyo only earned $30 million during it's entire US (albeit limited) run. The Toy Story 3D Double Feature only raked in about $30 million during it's entire US (albeit limited) run....so I'd say this RE-release is quite successful.

This kind of stuff is what MAKES a film for me. I hope there are kids in the audience astounded at the 3D, and babies crying, and whatnot, when I go. That means a new generation is coming out to enjoy this classic. That's what going to the theater is all about for me.
