Beauty and the Beast gets 3-D makeover
As of right now, BatB is one of only two DACs I don't have on DVD or Blu-Ray, I have 48 in all (the only other being "Tangled.")
I see it is only $17.50 for the Blu-ray + DVD combo pack at Wal-mart.
But they're also coming out with a 3D Blu-ray/2D Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo.
Does anyone know when that combo comes out? Is it worth waiting for that combo for the digital copy/3D Blu-ray or should I just get the $17.50 pack now?

Blu-ray.com has the 3D combo listed for a Fall 2011 release. I don't think there is anything more specific than that at the current time, unfortunately.Neal wrote:Does anyone know when that combo comes out? Regarding your question as to whether you should get the 2D combo pack now or wait for the 3D combo pack, I guess it all comes down to whether you see value in 3D or not. People seem to be really split on the whole 3D TV deal; either they wholeheartedly embrace it or turn away from it and declare it a fad.
If you think you might one day own a 3D TV, and BATB is a film you'd like to have in 3D, waiting might be the best option. If you buy the 2D combo now and upgrade to 3D later, it'll cost you twice as much, but if you wait to buy the 3D until this fall and spend aprox. $19.99 (using Tangled 3D as a guide), you'll be all set for only $2.50 more. Even if you never use the 3D disc, you aren't missing anything, and are gaining the digital copy.
I've decided to go ahead and buy 3D combo packs, when available, for all future releases (starting with Tangled), especially since it seems like DMR coupons are going to be for the 3D editions only. I suspect that somewhere down the line, all new HDTV's will come 3D enabled, so hopefully these 3D discs will eventually get some use. If you own a PlayStation 3, they've already upgraded the firmware to be 3D ready, so you are all set with a player.
I already own BATB in the 2D combo pack, and don't plan on upgrading, unless there is some ridiculously good DMR coupon. I'm wondering if Disney is going to try to entice those who already got the 2D combo with a really, really good deal to try to get us to upgrade to 3D?

I think Disney will offer a mail-in rebate for current owners of the regular Diamond Edition. They did that when Alice in Wonderland got released as a 3D combo pack last December. I had to cut the UPC from the back of the cover insert and mail it in with a copy of my receipt and a form that was enclosed. I'm actually not opposed to upgrading to the 3D edition of BatB, its gotten great reviews and I am very curious to see what it looks like myself. I'm also looking forward to the other DAC's that are supposed to come out in 3D this year as well, Meet the Robinsons and Bolt. Hopefully these hit stores before the fall.MJW wrote:I'm wondering if Disney is going to try to entice those who already got the 2D combo with a really, really good deal to try to get us to upgrade to 3D?

I'm among those in the middle. I'm apprehensive about it as a fad, but I'm very 3D curious.MJW wrote: Regarding your question as to whether you should get the 2D combo pack now or wait for the 3D combo pack, I guess it all comes down to whether you see value in 3D or not. It's like this: I'm waiting until either I can afford a good 3D TV, or the format is declared dead and I can buy a new one for a steal.

Disney quietly opens 3D beauty and the Beast in the US.

I know! I was so mad I missed it. I actually found out about it a week after the fact when I was on this celebrity blog, that is unrelated to Disney, and read that this reality tv star took her niece to the sing-along event at the El Capitan theater. I was livid.DisneyJedi wrote:They're such jerks, aren't they?tsom wrote:Ah, that's so unfair! I also hated how Disney rarely advertised the sing-along event that occurred in many theaters last year.

Forgive the cliche, but 'curiousity killed the cat.' 3-D forces the eyes to work in the wrong way, and while expose to it in the cinemas is not too bad, frequent exposure through TVs in the home can cause serious eye damage.ajmrowland wrote:I'm among those in the middle. That's total bs. There is no evidence of any effects beyond short term eye strain. If anything viewing a 3D display is healthier since it keeps your eyes actively shifting focus rather than on a fixed plane. like any other muscle, if its not being put to work enough it can become lazy over time.
3D can even help diagnose problems according to this article.

Your views on 3D (not just this thread but your rant in the Lion King one) are hyperbolic to say the least.

I don't see how viewing 3D images is not how eyes are supposed to work? Do we not perceive images (our environments) in 3D anyway?Disney Duster wrote:Well...doesn't it make sense that the eyes should work as they're supposed to much more often than made to work the way they're not supposed to? I mean, just common sense.
Why are our eyes "supposed" to only view movies in 2D? Just because 3D came afterwards and everyone is already used to viewing 2D entertainment?

I'm excited for this release. I like this movie more than Lion King (although it's not one of my top favorites)
Does anyone know if you can mail in rebate to upgrade to blu-ray? I have the Diamond edition DVD only but will they upgrade it kind of when they wanted you to upgrade from VHS to DVD?
Thanks in advance for your replies
