Ya know, this is why 20th Century Fox does some of MGM's blu-ray releases; they do a better job at the restorations than MGM can manage. Don't believe me? Watch Space Balls or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Blu-ray, then on DVD. You'll see a difference.jpanimation wrote:From what I hear, it's the same mediocre transfer HDNet Movies has been using the past couple of years. So expect some nice detail in some scenes but an overall grainy transfer with many instances of print damage. Also expect the disc to basically be barebones with not nearly as much extras as Anastasia. This is the kind of quality I've come to expect from MGM, who doesn't seem to invest much into their catalog titles, not surprising with them being bankrupt.MJW wrote:I hope Blu-ray.com puts of a review for NIMH; I am really curious to see how that film has been restored. Don Bluth and Gary Goldman approved that HD master, so if you have any problems, you'd have to take it up with them .jpanimation wrote:From what I hear, it's the same mediocre transfer HDNet Movies has been using the past couple of years. Review and screenshots are up at Blu-ray.com: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Secre ... 57/#Review
Picture quality only got 2.5 out of 5 stars. I think I am going to pass on this one. NIMH was probably the only Bluth film that I would get on Blu-ray besides Anastasia, which, thankfully, was sourced from digital files. I don't think the Bluth films are ever going to get a proper restoration, this may be the best we'll ever get.

That reviewer seems to be disappointed because it wasn't as scrubbed clean as a Disney movie. It seems to me that the Blu-ray still looks like film, and that's a good thing.MJW wrote:Review and screenshots are up at Blu-ray.com: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Secre ... 57/#Review

There is a $3 off coupon for the Anastasia Blu-ray at www.coupons.com. Click "home entertainment" on the left. Expires 4/30/11.
I'd like to pick up this title for the right price. The coupon helps, but it'd be nice it the sale price dropped too. It's a relatively new release, so not sure how much it might come down before the coupon expires at the end of this month.

I ended up ordering this title from DeepDiscount.com last week using a $10 off coupon I got from them by email. I paid $5.86 shipped after the coupon and cash back through Ebates.
I received the package yesterday and watched about half of the film last night. All I can say is "wow!" This film looks really great on Blu-ray - especially since up until last night, I'd only ever seen it on VHS.
I was never a huge fan of the film (I thought it was okay), but I definitely, definitely have a new appreciation for what I've seen so far. I tend to have a bad habit of going into viewing non-Disney titles with a chip on my shoulder, thinking a film could never be as good as one by Disney. Lately I've been trying to push that aside before I sit down to watch something so that my opinion is not bias.
For anyone who was interested in getting the Blu-ray but hasn't yet, I would suggest you go for it as I don't think you'll be disappointed. My only gripe so far is that it does come in an eco case (with the plastic cutouts), but that's okay, I could always switch the case in the future.
I'd really like to get more Don Bluth films on Blu-ray, but both The Secret of NIMH and All Dogs Go to Heaven Blu-rays got bad reviews in terms of picture quality. I don't think any of the studios that own his films are willing to invest enough to do proper restorations. The only chance we've got for decent Blu-ray releases are for the films that can be digitally sourced, as Anastasia was.
Does anyone know the first Bluth film to get the digital ink and paint treatment?

Looks like Fox is re-releasing Anastasia as a 3-disc, Blu-ray/DVD/Digital copy combo on 10/11/11.

I wonder if it will have a different cover than the Blu-ray only version?

Thanks for letting us know. I'd rather buy the combo pack instead of the single disc Blu-ray.MJW wrote:Looks like Fox is re-releasing Anastasia as a 3-disc, Blu-ray/DVD/Digital copy combo on 10/11/11.

Yeah, I ended up getting it with a $10 DeepDiscount.com coupon I got, which brought the price down to less than $6 with shipping. These single disc releases should really be priced better, especially when a combo pack is usually released later.UmbrellaFish wrote:I hope this combo pack lowers the price on the BD-only release. I've been meaning to get it forever, but I haven't seen it at a good price.
