Favourite Character, Scene and Song in Pinocchio

Post by Dr Frankenollie »

In 1940's Pinocchio, who's your favourite character, what's your favourite scene and what's your favourite song?

My favourite character is the delightful Geppetto, who is not only a great example for all fathers but is all a funny and charming character like most of Pinocchio's protagonists; my favourite scene is the introduction of Geppetto's workshop through Jiminy Cricket's eyes, showing all the creatively-designed clocks; and my favourite song is 'When You Wish Upon a Star' which is beautiful and heartwarming.

Who/what are yours?

I like these threads, Frank, but maybe you should use a little more time in between as to not overwhelm the forum members? But maybe that's just only my feeling, since I haven't been able to read/write much on UD as of late. Anyway, this is just a suggestion, not meant as criticism.

It's a very hard question. I think my favorite character is Jiminy Cricket. I just like his kind of humor. It's like he the more 'adult' character who can make the kind of funny comments which the other characters can't make, because of their role in the story. Otherwise, the fast-talking Honest John would have to be my favorite. I like his constant scheming and plotting and how creative he is in tricking Pinocchio.

My favorite scene probably is the scene in which Lampwick turns into a donkey, with Pinocchio's horrified reaction, the Coachman's henchmen who pack the boys-turned-into-donkies into cages, and the big escape. My favorite song is 'Give a whistle'!

Character: Pinocchio, with Honest John in a close second
Moment: The Coachman plots with Gideon and Honest John at the Red Lobster Inn
Song: Hard to choose...possibly "Hi Diddle Dee Dee"

Character: Bit of a hard one actually. Quite possibly a tie between Monstro and Jiminy Cricket.

Song: When You Wish Upon A Star

Scene: Again, a hard one. Pleasure Island is one of the first ones that come to mind, but it's a bit of a tie between that and the Monstro scenes which are really well done.

This is much harder than the Snow White one. Mainly because I enjoy this movie. :P

Favorite Character: Hmm. Probably Geppetto. I just find him to be a really sweet guy/father, which makes you understand why the Blue Fairy would grant his wish. Otherwise, Monstro. I like Pinocchio, Figaro and Honest John, too.

Favorite Scene: The ending scene with Monstro, when Pinocchio and Geppetto are trying to escape. Monstro has a really powerful screen presence, so part of the movie is pretty intense.

Favorite Song: “I’ve Got No Strings.” Probably because I love the scene that goes with it. “Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee” sticks in your head though.

Now this is damn hard for me to choose.

Favorite Characters: I love em all. But If I had to narrow it down to three it'd be Monstro, Coachman, Jiminy Cricket

Favorite scene: Again really hard to choose. I guess I'll go with Pleasure Island and the final monstro chase sequence.

favorite song: Hi-diddle-dee

Character: Blue Fairy
Song: Hi Diddle Dee Dee (although When You Wisn Upon A Star has a special place in my heart as the Disney anthem, especially when I hear it played at DL and WDW.)
Scene: Pinocchio escapes from Monstro
Lazario

Character: Figaro

Song: "When You Wish Upon a Star"

Scene: I actually still count this as one scene, but- all the underwater scenes previous to Monstro's first appearence onscreen (yes, this includes everything in, around, over, and through Cleo's fishbowl) and the moment connecting where Pinocchio and Jiminy jump off the cliff

Character - I love Jiminy as a general Disney figurehead, but in this movie I'm going to go with Honest John, I think. Love Figaro and Pinocchio too.

Scene - Definitely the scene where Lampwick and Pinoke are playing pool and begin to change into donkeys. LOVE that scene! Really love this movie! It was a big part of my youth. I need to watch it now! Ha.

Song - When You Wish Upon a Star (it's classic, though I LOVE Hi Diddle Dee Dee)

Character: Jimminy Crickets, Figaro

Scene: the scene in which Lampwick turns into a donkey is a given for me, but there are so many other good scenes. I also like to mention Pinocchio's performance in Stromboli's marionet theatre.

Song: Again difficult, but I choose "I've got no string"

Character - Jimminy Cricket or The Blue Fairy. Jimminy is just iconic, and I love him as a character outside of the film as well. I love The Blue Fairy's design.

Scene - The "I've Got No Strings" sequence. Although it's overall menacing, I've always thought it to be a lot of fun. I enjoy how the other puppets display so much character even though they aren't alive.

Song - "When You Wish Upon A Star", it's a beautiful song that has come to represent everything Disney. It's just perfect.

This film taught me never to stray from "the straight and narrow" *haha* right lol.

FoulFellow/Gideon/Pinocchio and Jimminy Cricket are well define in their respective scenes, the animation of FoulFellow/Gideon is superb, the movements flows with personality (in my opinon). The min you see J. Cricket at the start of the film, you can't help but love the character, Ward Kimball must've had fun animating this role, so much spark, warmth, humor and sincerity comes thru Jimminy. Milt Khal did a fantasic job of Pinocchio's personality, he's not intentionaly ingoring Jimmy's advice, he's just goin with the flow.

Hi Diddle A Dee will always remain a popular fav. with me, it kinda echos Heigh Ho (lil bit) tone melody wise.

3 sequences stuck in my mind when i watched this film the 1st time, Pinocchio meeting FoulFellow/Gideon, Pleasure Island sequence and Monstro sequence.

Watchin Pinocchio is always treat and it'll last forever in Americana's legacy of Film History

I couldn't agree more; the character animation in this masterpiece is some of the best Disney's ever done. Ward Kimball's Jiminy Cricket and Milt Kahl's Pinocchio are two wonderfully animated characters, and then there's Bill Tytla's larger-than-life Stromboli, not to mention the charming animation of Geppetto by Art Babbitt. Pinocchio's character movements are utterly spectacular.

Stromboli's movements seem alil fast (imo) yet his personality is expressive, his personality made you curious bout his lifestyle, you wanted to know him more as a supporting villain.

I claim FoulFellow/Gideon as the main villains even though they're soft villains, read on a jim hill media article bout FoulFellow/Gideon bein casted in Mickey/Beanstalk as the con artist who swindle Mickey's cow.

Off topic: what's this war between Walt/Art Babbit?? I know bout the animatior strike but they always mention Art bein the source....

Character: The Blue Fairy (one of the most beautiful vintage Disney female characters), Jiminy Cricket
Scene: Every scene with Monstro (actually Pinocchio started my fascination with whales)
Song: When You Wish Upon A Star

Character: Jiminy followed by Figaro. I'm a sucker for cats.

Song: When you wish upon a star.

Scene: The monstro scenes are fantastic but mine is when he is locked in the cage and his nose keeps growing. As a four year old I actually longed for my parents to buy me a cage I could sit in. I did ask several times but they never went for that idea funny enough.
Settling Soul mates? That is grim. And I've played Monopoly alone.
