Anyone here have experience with shipping pets?

Post by Elladorine »

I'm trying to do some online research on shipping pets across the country but am not having any luck aside from having to fill out forms with information I don't yet have, or without having to make some kind of bid or commitment.

See, I'd been counting on making a trip from Nevada to Illinois to visit some family within the next few months, and since my brother's dog recently had puppies (they're now old enough to be away from their mother) I was hoping to bring one of them back home to Vegas with me. :) But the thing is that our car broke down on Monday, and from the looks of it the damage is very extensive; at this point it appears the entire engine will have to be replaced, and if that is the case, we won't be able to afford the trip. :(

We're thinking about actually having the puppy shipped here through a service that specializes in transporting animals instead, but since I'm finding so little information at the moment I thought I'd check in here to see if anyone has had experience in doing this. I do know that the puppy will need a vet examination and all vaccinations before the trip which I'm sure my brother can arrange, and of course I want a service that will be safe and reliable.

If anyone has any information or experience that could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. :) Oh, and here's a photo of one of them, just for the aw factor. :D

I'll try to do some research about it....if your brother is going to ship them via ground...call the post office, though depdning on your post office, I'd call the customer service number on the usps website of contact us....or UPS, or fedex also has those services regarding stuff...I'm not sure i'd go with a service like the one you have in mind....Also to make sure a service is credible or not...try looking into the BBB (Better Buisness Bureau)

Thanks. I'm not sure if I like the idea of a USPS/FedEx-type service for this; the dog will still be a puppy and it sounds like it would be a scary trip. I actually just found this, which so far may be our best option: http://katmandogexpress.com/

We're going to give them a call soon and see if they would be the right place for us to go with. :) They even do travel updates on their facebook page!

Well scratch that, those guys are over $900, lol. And I've found out the average "shipping" rate for a dog is $350 by flight; we were hoping for something closer to $200.

We've had a complete change in plans anyway, right now the trip's taking priority over the car so maybe just taking the puppy back home with us won't be an issue.

Do research about this site.....and run it by the Better Bussiness Bureau website....you can't be too safe when it comes to transporting animals/pets

It's all good, now we'll be renting a car and driving for the trip, so we'll be able to have the puppy ride with us and not have to worry about relying on anyone else to transport her. :)
