Ooh, thank you for the coupon link! Should come in handy. :D

And hmm, apparently we don't have a thread going for Rango?

FYI, Applebee's is offering a $3 coupon for Rio on their kids menu. No sign of a printable coupon that I can tell though.

Thanks for bumping this, as I wanted to reply to your post when I first saw it, got busy, and later forgot to!

Sure the plot was predictable (aren't most DAC's just as much?), but everything was handled in such an entertaining way that it didn't matter; sometimes it's just best to sit back and enjoy the ride. The animation, scenery, and palette were just gorgeous. You can tell the animators did their homework on how they handled the birds just on the walking alone. The voice work was top-notch, even my husband (who is Hispanic) was impressed with the authenticity of the accents; many films like this wouldn't bother.

Some of it felt very 60's Disney, or maybe I've just visited the Enchanted Tiki Room one too many times. :p Disney essence, anyone? The music was great! I love how they even included Mas Que Nada, a song I grew up with:

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9U1v01SGtGE?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9U1v01SGtGE?ve ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
I really enjoyed it, too! For one thing, I enjoyed the songs, including Mas Que Nada, which I always enjoy in the Animal Kingdom parade! But I enjoyed the other, original songs too. Very fun and festive! As another poster said, probably the closest we will get in a new film to the musical vibe of Saludos Amigos and Three Caballeros that I love so much.

It encourages me to see more and more animated films (Disney and otherwise) returning to a musical format!

But yes, the movie was really colorful and also had a lot of heart, and the birdies were really cute!

As far as the celebrity voices that others were concerned about, this didn't annoy me, simply because I've gotten to the point where I see so little contemporary live action and follow pop culture so little that I usually don't recognize celebrity voices!

The only thing that I was concerned about BEFORE going to see it was the idea of the 2 birds being forced to mate because they were the last of their kind. (this also didn't appeal to me about the now-canceled Newt).

Luckilly, though, this just seemed like more of a plot device to get Blu and Linda down to Rio, because by the end it was clear that Blu and Jewel were together because they WANTED to be, not because they HAD to be (which for me is a very important distinction.)
Oh, and I painted something last night:

Did anyone else pick this up on Blu-ray or DVD Tuesday when it was released? What do you think of all the extras?

I was so happy that they didn't wait until Christmas for this movie to come to Blu-ray. It is so charming, and has such a great story, and is one of the few animated films that actually tugs at your heartstrings.

The extras are such a bonus. I love this movie, and it will not be far from my Blu-ray player for quite some time.

Yeah, I picked the Blu-Ray on Tuesday. It's one of those films where I have a big smile on my face the entire running time and I imagine I will be watching it a lot in the years to come.

As for the bonuses, yeah, there were a solid bunch. I do wish we got have gotten an audio commentary from Carlos Saldanha and a Portuguese-language track. I'm fluent in the language, so I'm curious how they dub animated films and this seemed like a logical film to have that dub. But those are my own gripes with the disc. Along with the extras, the film looks stunning and the soundtrack really pops.

Luke has his Rio review up, I'm not sure if he forgot to post it or not (I can understand why though), but here it is anyway:

I don't know what type of Blu-ray player Luke has, but those "stuttering" pauses and skips never have occurred on any of my Blu-ray discs before. I think he may need to upgrade, or have his laser lens cleaned (they are supposed to be done every 20 hours of playback).

As for his review, I loved it, but I think he missed the target audience for "Rio". He says in his closing remarks that it doesn't have a re-watchable effect that most Pixar/Disney films have, and I found that to be very wrong in our family case. My grandkids can watch this film over and over with the same enjoyment. My three-year-old granddaughter knows the words to all the songs and she dances with the birds all the time the movie is playing.

I really like this movie, and while predictable, it does have a lot of re-watchability in our house.

Thanks! :)

I just wanted to pop in to say that I picked this up the day after release and was not disappointed. While the behind-the-scenes material did focus on the voice artists, I was pleasantly surprised to see them showing CG animators planning out the animation through good old drawing by hand. :D

I also had absolutely no playback issues (I haven't ever with any Blu-ray actually) and sat through this more times in a row than when I first bought Tangled.
