Thoughts on selling off dvd collections.

Post by Disney Guru »

I know its a rather stupid question, but have been thinking for a while about selling off my dvd collection. Been cleaning it out a bit selling stuff i don't really watch much due to some financial issues which just seem to keep adding up. And I might be out of work in a couple months not sure how long it will take me to find a job been looking for a while with no luck whatsoever. Part of me doesn't want to sell my DVDs one of the few things I have left that that I really enjoy but on the other hand the money would definitely come in handy. Not sure what to do. I don't really want to but the money in the bank would definitely help with my upcoming financial issues.

I started selling off a bunch of DVDs and BluRays this past week. Don't feel bad about it. The money is more important. Though I would make special exceptions for those DVDs that you know won't come back out later in better editions. This is why I'm keeping current copies of my Aladdin PE and my Brother Bear CE. I also make exceptions for DVDs I know I will watch repeatedly and constantly. I think I sold off my Mulan SE too soon but I'm hoping that eventually a BluRay release will come out with the combo pack. I do plan on selling anything that I know will get a rerelease later and that's what I would recommend you do. Maybe in a few years you will have money again to get all those movies back in their new editions. Unless you don't plan on doing BluRay for a while. Then I would recommend the combo packs. We don't know how long it will be before standard DVDs will be gone for good.

Otherwise, there are cheap ways to access your favorite movies online both legal and non-legal. That's all I will say on that. :D

I've been sufferin this problem too, mostly from an finacial view, yes blu ray is steadly takin over dvd's place yet many people assumed that cds would be DEAD! when Itunes/Pod arrived on the scene.

The way i've been sellin my dvd collections is this, I decided to purchase some of the films that will be/arleady on Blu I.E Pinocchio, Wizard Of Oz, Chaplin. So I decided to sell the dvd version of the movies that I upgraded to blu ray since most of the blu ray contained new/previous bonus feats. Now givin that I have multiple siblings/lil nephews/niece, I could've handed the dvd verisons of the Disney films to family, but I just can't figure out if I should sell 'em though :( Last month it was hard sayin good bye to some Nip/Tuck/Charmed dvds, but it was worth it, the Pixar films are headin to my dad's owership since next month I pre ordered Wall E Up and Ratoullie and just waiting on Nemo for blu ray. Also I got'ta talk with my finacee bout HER movie collections, so that way I'll know which ones I could seriously sell.

For now I'm sellin my non Disney dvds that I upgraded, currently I'm tryin to sell off some hardcover books, I agreed not to sell my Disney history books, but I only read maybe 5 book series repeatedly, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Chron. Of Narnina, Peter and the Starcatchers and Looking Glass Wars.

Last time I sold 14 dvds and I manged to get $43 out of 'em, the main prize was the Harry Potter: 1-5 dvd set, at 1st I thought it'd get me $90 but then I remembered that Warners was gon'na re-release the same set but with Year 6.

Pick a handful of films (five or less) that you really like, then start slowly selling off what you can of the rest of it. I know, it sucks, but money to pay for food and bills is more important. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your input, made my decision going to try and sell everything off. Taking them to FYE tomorrow since its my day off heres hoping i'll get something reasonable out of them *fingers crossed* Thought about going through them again but decided it would be better just to get rid of everything less heartbreak.

Yikes! FYE? I sold a bunch of DVDs there once that were valued around $30 or $50 and only got $6 out of the whole lot. If you have a lot of well known movies I would recommend Amazon instead.

I sold about a dozen Dvds and BluRays on Amazon this past week and I'm getting around $110 for that. I mean, some of these were movies that I know would go for $3 at least even after all the shipping and commission while others went abour $10-$15 depending on the demand and recent release of the movie. It's actually gotten better for me to sell on Amazon than it has in the past.

A few pointers that I figured out:

* Check each movie on Amazon and see what the lowest used price is being sold for. If alot of the same movie is being sold for less than $2, then you might be better off trying to sell it at FYE.
*In some cases depending on how quickly you need to money, if you sell the product at the lowest price than all the other sellers (and it's a popular movie) it should be sold within a few days.
* I bought size 1 envelopes from a dollar store. They sell them in packs of 2 for $1 which is still a better value than going to Walmart and getting a 5 pack for whatever they sell it for. Size 0 envelopes can barely fit BluRays but only if they aren't thick with multiple disks.
* You have several shipping options as to how you are willing to ship each product. For any DVDs that are shipped by standard, I would ship media mail and get delivery confirmation. For some DVDs (I assume based on zip code), they'll actually be cheaper to ship First Class with the confirmation included than w/ media mail and confirmation. Just ask for the cheapest shipping rate on each DVD. Total price should be somewhere between $2-$3 to ship each DVD at the lowest rate.

All in all, yes you lose a bit of money you originally sold the product on Amazon for to comission but hopefully the tips above will prevent you from losing less than intended. For the Disney movies especially I'm certain you'll get more money selling those on Amazon than selling them to FYE.

I appreciate your advice toonaspie but i rather get them done with in one fell swoop my speculations should bring in at least $200 which will help infinitely any i can't sell just donate to a local thrift store or something. I know my logic is probably lacking but just need to do it in one fell swoop this whole thing just has me really down would rather have them gone a little money in my pocket then having them staring in my face.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to sell your collection. I was just wondering if you considered something like bringing them to a pawn shop, because that way you can keep the paperwork and get them back out when your situation improves. (So it would basically be like a loan, using your collection as collateral). If you don't have the money to get them out in time, you could either pay interest to get an extension, or just let them go, keeping the money you got for them. But at least that way there would be a chance of getting them back...

Just a thought, but maybe you should make a thread in the sell/trade section on this site (or another Disney/DVD site). I know there are tons of people here who will pay more fairly than FYE, and, though they may not buy them all in bulk, you will have the satisfaction of knowing your movies will be in the hands of a collector, or even better and more likely, somebody that will appreciate the movie as much as you did. It may just help you through the pain of losing your collection. I don't know if it's just me, but I like knowing that when I have to sell something that I really adore (as I see you are having a difficult time parting with your collection), who I am selling it too will really enjoy it, as I had.

Then again, if selling them individually is just too hard, thats understandable. I hope everything works out well in the end =).

Thanks guys for your help went to FYE got more then I thought I would they bought all but about 60 of the 234. Ended up dropping off the others at a local charity shop. Kinda weird seeing the empty cabinets in my living room now but you know its not really that bad have my netflix instant viewing Que stockpiled with movies to watch so not like i don't have anything to watch. And after all they were just material possessions yeah I miss having them but life goes on and the money in the bank to help with any issues that may arise makes it worth it.

It sounds like you were looking more to get rid of them than to make much money, Guru. Anyway, I hope you let yourself keep a few special ones. What's become of your clamshell collection?

I just tossed a bunch of VHS in the trash, most of 'em were upgraded to dvd/blu, is there any place that'll take Booksk/Vhs?? yesterday I spoke with my fiancee bout the movie department (finally) and she told me not to bring Tom/Jerry, but I convinced her and told her the series meant somethin to me (they were my 1st exposure to Non Disney). She agree with my dilema of sellin off the platinum dvds.
