I was wrong.

Post by Goliath »

I suspect this thread will be closed after my initial post, since it may be 'technically' against the rules, but still, I wanted to say something.

I was wrong for saying what I did to Julian. In fact, I want to add something: I want to apologize to Julian for saying what I did. It was unneccessary and unwise to say such a thing.

That does not mean I think I wasn't provoked. I think I was. However, that is no excuse for my bad language. This also doesn't mean I don't think people on UD generally tend to focus too much on the way something is expressed instead of the substance that's being expressed. Again, however, this does not mean I had the right to use foul language and behave badly.

I would like for pap64's thread to be re-opened (maybe merge this post with the existing thread), so this can be discussed in broad, general (non-specific) terms.

I am glad you made this thread because I was in the process of suspending you when I saw it. There is no need for the kind of behavior you have been exhibiting lately. You are not alone in your actions, but I haven't seen anyone so egregiously ignoring the basic respect to one another I ask of all forum members. Consider yourself spared for now, but there will be real consequences for the next infraction.

I suspect you're referring to my clash lately with Lazario. That happened in one thread and one thread only and if you read back, you'll see I was merely arguing back after having been accused of things I never said or did, including veiled references to possible misogyny, which is not only a nasty accusation and a personal attack, but also untrue.

So while I respect you and your reply and I have nothing against the moderators (I have been a moderator for a forum in the past and I know it's an ungrateful job), I'll have to disagree with your assessment of both my character and my behavior. I think phrases like "kind of behavior... lately" and "egregiously ignoring basic respect" are an exaggeration as well as character assassination.

I have respect for almost all forum members here, excluded the ones who have made homophobic or anti-semetic posts in the past, but who have gotten away with it because they used such 'polite' language and added "in my opinion" to it. And even to them, I hold my tongue. Being in a heated argument with somebody does *not* mean I disrespect them. Ask SWillie!, ask enigmawing.

I've always said I hold the moderation of UD in the highest regard, because people are basically allowed to say what they think, without the mods getting in there for every little remark that might, possibly, somehow, if you read closely, offend somebody, in the future. There's much freedom on UD, is what I mean to say. But, I don't like threats like "consider yourself spared". Let's not be so theatrical about it and call it what it is: an internet forum where we come to have some fun and sometimes disagree.

Okay? :)

I just saw your apology and I feel touched.

Your words did hurt but I'm ready to forgive. Also, if I hurt you in any way, please forgive me too.

I'm referring to the part where you wrote that I belittled your personal story. I didn't mean to. It's probably more the result of furious and careless typing and a lack of argumentative skills.

You should know that I hold you in very high regard, despite our disagreements. You write with wit and intelligence and I think your heart is in the right place.

I never read what was said and I have nothing to do with it. But, I wanted to commend you for apologizing. I hardly ever see that online and it gives me hope that the internet can be a good place for discussion. I've been rather jaded about it lately. So thanks and great job! :D

It's been roughly a month. I wouldn't call that much of a bumping :P
