Do you guys suppose this will be able to recoup its budget, let alone double its budget when it comes out? Because I really want this to do well and prove that 2D animation isn't a dying and unprofitable medium!

Don't worry, with such a small budget (35 million) it will be easy for it to make a profit (even a marginal one). Besides, they did not make the film assuming that it would be a blockbuster; they are aware that the target demographic of Pooh is limited. They made the film in order to 'revive' the Pooh franchise and boost merchandise sales which had been declining. I'm sure that in that department Pooh will do just fine.

As Disney Consumer Products's second largest franchise with massive global appeal, Winnie the Pooh will return to the big screen in the United States next month. DCP has already seen a positive lift in product sales from the theatrical release in Europe earlier this year and anticipates solid sales in the fall during the DVD's release. Already a hit in the digital and social media realm, the Winnie The Pooh: What's A Bear To Do? Puzzle Book app instantly topped the sales charts for iPad and iPhone in 12 countries. This continued exposure and the investments with Disney Baby will be key drivers for growth of the franchise going forward.

Turned out to be a "show and tell" for the Winnie the Pooh rollout. A staffer who worked on the movie grumbled to me:

"I don't think management is putting much money or effort into promoting hand-drawn features. We're doing these movies for 'little kids,' and Pixar is doing their movies for everybody. If we make hand-drawn cheap, and they outsource a lot of it, maybe they'll make more. And the directors here know they'll have a better chance of getting something greenlit if they pitch a CGI feature ..."

But it's kind of obvious at this point. Corporate thinking at Dis Co. and other entertainment companies is that computer animation rocks, the other kind is fit mostly for television and television-sized budgets. Disney made Winnie the Pooh for the home market, not the big silver screen. I like hand-drawn features a lot, but our fine conglomerates don't care what I like. CGI is where the big bucks are, and that is where they're gonna go.

So far I've seen only one. It was pretty much just a shorter version of the movie trailer.

Yeah, that's why I came in to tell you I did a few minutes ago. :D I laughed at a couple of times. :)

My 2 favorites lime were, "Send in the Pig"-Roo and:

Rabbit: "Knock knock!"
Pooh: "Who's there?"
"Pooh!"
"Pooh who?"
"POOH?!?!!!! :x "

I've kinda been ignoring this film, but I saw the trailer for it in front of Cars 2, and I thought it was really well done. Now I'm super pumped for this!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, they played the trailer before Cars 2 at my screening today and it got a good reaction from the audience. :)
