Is Double-Dipping a good practise?

Sorry if the title is a little misleading, but I'm not sure whether to get some of the recently re-released Disney movies on Blu-Ray.

I've already got the Alice in Wonderland Un-Anniversary Edition and the Bambi Platinum Edition (both on DVD), so are the new Blu-Ray releases of those films worth buying?

If you truly care about HD picture and lossless sound (only in the case of Alice in Wonderland), then yes.

No, double dipping is never a good idea. It keeps you constantly pay over and over again for the same movie. It's a waste of money.

That said, I have have done it many time,mostly with Disney movies.

Now that I'm married though, I think my double-dipping days may be coming to an end however.

Now that I have an HD TV, I care about getting the picture in HD on certain titles. When I can get a good deal I don't mind upgrading/double-dipping to a Blu-ray.

I have only double-dipped if the special features are REALLY worth it.

Im considering Alice in Wonderland tho...my dvd is scratched and the blu ray/dvd combo has cinexplore....tempting!

From what I hear, Bambi is not worth double dipping.

Again, this all based on speacial features, not whether u want the film in hi def

I never collected DVDs except for the platinum so I am expanding my collection now - thats why when 3D blu rays are released I buy those out of fear of having to buy them again at a later date.

Make no mistake with digital copies and 3D releases this is the final time I'm buying these movies.

If it's a transition from one home media format to another (e.g. owning it on VHS and getting the laserdisc, then getting the DVD, then getting the Blu-Ray), I don't really consider it double-dipping. Even though it is the same movie being bought again and again, each one comes with a superior quality in audio/video, regardless if there's more/less/the same special features as before. That merits being called an upgrade, and not a double-dip. But that's just me.

Yeah, that would be upgrading, not double dipping. About double dipping, I've bught some disney titles on dvd a couple of times myself, but it was because the first edition was not even anamorphic or barebones, disney started to release really cool two-disc editions for some movies, so I kinda neede to have those...but they're getting lazier and lazier these days that such thing doesn't concern me anymore

Upgrades from VHS to DVD or maybe even DVD to Blu-Ray aside...

As much as I may be interested in getting things in better picture quality and with better bonus features, I can't help but find double dipping a bit souless and consumerist. That said, I have given in some times.

The only title I have ever double-dipped on was Up. I bought the DVD long before I had an HDTV/Blu-ray player, but I recently upgraded to the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital copy combo and sold my DVD only copy on eBay for $9.00. Other than Up, I don't have any DAC or Pixar films on DVD, so the Blu-rays are my first purchase of said titles.

The only reason I'll double-dip on any title in the future is for improvements in the movie itself (audio/video quality, etc.). I will not re-buy just to get a new cover design, slip case, etc.

Personally, I think upgrading from a VHS to DVD or DVD to blu-ray is fine. But I'll never understand the people who will purchase a re-release of a blu-ray because of the slipcovers or different cover designs, when almost everything else is the same. Unless there's a very nice coupon involved.

If you're upgrading from one format to the other, I can understand that. And even if you're buying the film again for the bonus features, that's understandable too. I've only double dipped on two things. I have 3 copies of Snow White (Platinum, Diamond, and the 2-Disc DVD), two of Beauty and the Beast (Platinum, Diamond). I'm going to double dip on all of the Platinum/Diamond titles, because I'm a freak and I want the whole line.

You know, as a teenager I sold all my Disney VHS tapes (except Little Mermaid and Beauty And The Beast) and regretted it ever since.

So last year I decided to collect the dvds, and have double dipped on some just to buy off my guilt of having sold all my tapes in the past and don't wanna miss out on any editions anymore.

And I'm not really concerned with special features because I only watch them once. The most important feature to me is the HD quality.

I never double dip, as soon as a title is announced I sell on eBay. I sold The Fox and The Hound DVD as soon as I heard it was coming to Blu-ray, and I got over $14.00 for it. I've bought all the Disney releases the week of and used the coupon; off the top of my head I paid $12.99 for Bambi the day it was released at Best Buy.

So basically I upgrade my Disney titles for free. I don't do this with most movies, I'm happy with the DVDs, but with Disney I make an exception. And (so far) Disney's HD transfers have been exceptional. Alice In Wonderland, for instance, is breath taking on Blu-ray. I can't wait for The Lion King.

im glad i kept my VHS copies as i passed them on to my neice and nephews. now they have no excuse to borrow the majority of my dvd collection except for movies not released on VHS.
last time they came for the weekend, my 5 year old neice sat and watched snow white twice and all 3 watched the toy story trilogy. must admit i was shocked at the poor quality of TS1 on video compared to even the dvd, never mind the BLU.

i dont double dip on movies of the same format [except i have several copies of cars on both dvd and blu] but i do rebuy certain titles on blu when they come out. i guess i should start getting the 3d versions but not sure if i will ever get a 3dtv.

I like to collect different movie releases because of the different covers and the different bonus material. And upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray makes the picture and sound better, it's really great to see movies in HD.

The only title I double dipped on with DVD was the Original Star Wars Trilogy (had the original release, and bought the individual releases to get the Original Cuts of the movie(s)).

I said a few years ago that I wouldn't repurchase movies I already have on DVD with Blu-rays, but I've done it a lot. Its mainly Disney titles because of their excellent deals/coupons. However I have also upgraded a few favorites from DVD to Blu-ray because of the picture/audio upgrade.

I try not to buy a lot of DVDs anymore, unless its a title I know may not come out on Blu-ray for a long time (or its cheap). I want to try to prevent more upgrading/double dipping if I can... Although there are a few titles coming out this year that I will pickup on Blu-ray that I already have on DVD.

I have asked myself this same question as the diamond editions have been released and even back when he had limited editions to platinum's. I have double dipped unfortunately, for example i had sleeping beauty special edition then i got the platinum edition because the quality was better on dvd. Then i tripled dipped with the blu-ray because the picture was amazing. As nice as the upgrades where, not worth having 3xs. I will not be doing this anymore. If they keep upgrading technology the way that they are we are going to have the same movie 10Xs, even 3d is coming out.

I also did it on Beauty and the Beast becuase that is my favorite movie, but i actually didn't like it on blu-ray. So i regret that one. I am happy with my special editions/platinum editions. I only buy something i don't have on DVD already like The princess and the Frog just bought it on blu-ray. I really think it's ridiculous to have the same movie 3 or 4 times. They don't even have re-sale value because once there is news that a new edition is coming out, you pretty much can't sale the old one to get the new one. People will be interested in the new one. Just my opinion.

The Bambi combo is worth it. The IWSM feature doubles as one similar to the interactive documentary on BATB
