@ Lazario: why is that, everytime you discuss Lady Gaga, you have to take a jab at me? Fine, I once said I think she's overrated, she can't sing and her songs suck. That's my opinion, you are free to disagree. I couldn't care less how much you like her. But can you please stop the fake drama? It's getting old really quick.
@ rs_milo_whatever: I actually like Angelina Jolie a lot. No, not for her looks (although obviously I wouldn't kick her out of my bed), but because she promotes humanitarian causes, and is noted for her work with refugees as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). I also think it's wonderful she adopted three kids whom otherwise had to grow up in poverty. I wish everybody would adopt instead of having kids of their own: way to stop overpopulation! (Yes, I know she had one or two of herself, but still.) Oh, and she's a damn good actress.

I should consider making a short comic of Goliath vs Lazario.

Oh, yeah? Because, I'm telling you, we wouldn't be talking about this and this wouldn't be an issue for you if opportunists weren't using her to get themselves views on YouTube. It's an inconvenient truth worth acknowledging. Why the hell would I, for example, have a problem with her (and not them) over this? She still lives in the moment and speaks her mind. Her point anyway was that she was going to deliver a reliable performance to the crowd, who seem to have appreciated it (although, do they ever shut up?- I could barely hear a word she said in the "Future Love" videos). It's you who chooses to see the subject of her "attack" as being less arrogant singers. But here's the joke, a little fame can go to anyone's head. Even the Britney's of the industry. Anyone.rs_milo_whatever wrote:It doesn't matter where she said it, it was still a public display of arrogance and she insulted others
(By the way, my use of "quotations" on attack was not me trying to say that you used the word)
Yeah, well, that's nice and everything. But there's being idealistic and being realistic. I believe that talent is more important. And if I may be so bold, Lady Gaga has demonstrated more in a shorter period of time than Britney has. As well as more ambition, bigger ideas, and... in addition to plastic controversy (which it's just as much the fault of the people who are easily riled up as it is someone like Gaga for just speaking her "future-tense"), she delivers genuine provocation. She makes people think. The only time I was legitimately wowed by something Britney did, in the creative sense, was the idea that she might have something to say with "Everytime" about suicide. Turned out, there was no big idea- it's just her in a bathtub and she accidentally falls in semi-unconscious. Ooops. The style of the song is more stirring than any concept her or her people came up with for it. It's coldly sweet.rs_milo_whatever wrote:I didn't say she didn't have the right to have an opinion, I said she was rude and it was unnecessary. I don't care who you are, you need to be respectful of others, especially those who have had only nice things to say about you. Humility goes a long way and I have more respect for a person like Britney who has never in her life talked smack about another artist.
Ke$ha = "drunk party girl"rs_milo_whatever wrote:Also, how were the videos for Tik Tok or Baby One More Time gimmicks?
Britney = "not so innocent school-girl"
But, I didn't say videos exclusively.
Please don't take this the wrong way (that argument just begs for this kind of response), but... If you haven't seen better than Britney, you've had your eyes closed. And this is from someone who thinks Blackout was a smash- I really do have cause to like her enough to give her a break. She's a fantastic robot (as, I believe, her stints as one on SNL have proved; ...that was her, wasn't it?). And let's not forget all the people who have said Britney never had any talent in singing. I don't usually listen to those people (especially since they say the same thing about Madonna and, even if that's true, I just don't care- her voice is a great fit for the songs whether she has any range or not), but my opinion isn't the only one I think is relevant here.rs_milo_whatever wrote:If you asked me Britney is a beloved artist because of her attitude and the kind of performer she once was. She was phenomenal, haven't seen anything better since she was on top.
I've heard the Britney's one hell of a dancer argument before too, and I know how much people think dancing is an important part of a fully-formed pop act (all those years of boygroups have sadly pounded that into my head). But, just because she's had a larger group of fans than anyone to come after (although with Lady Gaga here and breaking records all over the place, that is now up for debate)... well, that's the argument of quantity equals quality. Oh, but I can see that's not what you're arguing. It's merely one of the inescapable facts that have forced us to actually pay attention when she shaved her head, got a reality show, mistreated her baby, and got in that famous pop-girl sandwich. This however, has nothing to do with Lady Gaga. At all. She's expressed how important singing is over all other forms of performing in interviews, therefore- what else would she say at a concert? I will give you this, though: everyone so far who have made claims about not lip-syncing have lived to be embarrassed (even if they pretend it can't touch them). Meanwhile, I say- screw dancing. I can dance myself, I don't need anyone to do it for me (in fact, that's one of the reasons why I haven't been very keen on Lady Gaga's 3 music videos prior to "Judas"- yay! Finally, a video where dancing takes up less than 1 minute in a 5+ minute production!). Besides, Madonna was there first and no one after her is ever going to come up with their own "Vogue."
Sure, Goliath- we both know what this is all about, so I'll just summarize it for you:Goliath wrote:@ Lazario: why is that, everytime you discuss Lady Gaga, you have to take a jab at me? It was your choice to respond even though what I said was rhetorical. Not happy with that- next time make a different one.

In that case, hasn't every single one of Lady GaGa's videos been a gimmick? She always comes off as this larger than life, robotic creature. Lady GaGa's talent lies in her writing skills, her performance style is not inventive at all. She just yells for a while and then does some kicks and picks of her hands. She has used back track before, it has been proven on a couple of videos, including her recent Judas performance on Ellen. In fact, Lady GaGa and Britney Spears probably equal each other in talent in what they do; here's the difference: Lady GaGa doesn't let us forget how talented she is.

And I'm sorry, but the "speaking your mind" excuse is a huge pile of bull, she's just a jerk with a microphone.
Lady GaGa, Vogue 2011:
I don't think GaGa has demonstrated more, people have just forgotten what Britney did during the first years in her career to make way to the apparently unforgettable shaving of the head.Speaking from a musical standpoint, I think I am a great performer. I am a talented entertainer. I consider myself to have one of the greatest vocals in the industry. I consider myself to be one of the greatest songwriters.

To perpuate what type of leading image? As several other UD'ers here have pointed out- she doesn't care if people think she's sexy, her references to religion are not done just to stir up controversy, and while singing songs about "The Fame," she never pretended to be famous. This goes for all her videos as well. What are her videos, in your eyes, a gimmick... for?rs_milo_whatever wrote:In that case, hasn't every single one of Lady GaGa's videos been a gimmick?
Only in "Paparazzi," although she claims a frequent inspiration from Metropolis. If you're trying to say she lacks emotion, I can agree with that. But then that only makes what she does look more intelligent. I'm not much of an emotional person myself.rs_milo_whatever wrote:She always comes off as this larger than life, robotic creature.
Hey- that's good enough for me. I care most about the music (don't ask me why, usually the first thing that attracts me to an artist is a visual aesthetic - Bjork, Marilyn Manson, Madonna, Beck, Courtney Love's projects, Billy Corgan's projects... even Weird Al when I was going through my psycho-Weird Al phase). I kind of have to, again, since I completely lost interest in her videos when "Telephone" came out.rs_milo_whatever wrote:Lady GaGa's talent lies in her writing skills
Are we talking strictly live performance? If so, you may have bested me here. I almost never take live performance into account- not everyone can have that experience, of going to these shows and seeing these people onstage. Best we can do if you don't have deep pockets is YouTube and brave potentially shoddy quality. And I don't see how music can mean more just because an artist is a talented dancer. Does the art of dance unlock some secret message in the song that people who heard the studio / album version(s) have missed... ? Or... is it just that this art means more to certain fans? Because then, if Britney's in any way better because of her fans, are you sure Lady Gaga doesn't give more back to hers? At least in interviews, she kisses their asses like they're the performers and she's the microphone. And she sure as hell isn't just talking about fashion and dressing up.rs_milo_whatever wrote:her performance style is not inventive at all. I heard all about that interview, no surprises there. In fact, jerk or not: She. Is. Still. Speaking her mind.rs_milo_whatever wrote:In fact, Lady GaGa and Britney Spears probably equal each other in talent in what they do; here's the difference: Lady GaGa doesn't let us forget how talented she is.

As for Britney, again... how old were you when she first broke out? I'm not just saying I'm older but I was 16 when she hit it big. I was there. I remember very well how talented she was
...at her gimmicks.
