I don't think Hunchback is underrated among fans. Definitely Disney, but not fans.

What? How the heck is The Princess and the Frog- one of Disney's most recent and best films that sold lots of merchandise- underrated? :?

Anyways, I think these movies are underrated to no end:

- Robin Hood
- Oliver & Company (It stars awesome guys like Billy Joel, Bette Midler and even Dom Freakin' DeLuise!)
- The Black Cauldron (I want the uncut version of the movie, damn it!)
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Pocahontas
- Bolt
- Treasure Planet
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Not every Disney movie HAS to be a fairy tale kind of setting OR... whatever.)
- The Great Mouse Detective

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (even though it is becoming better appreciated.)
The Black Cauldron
James and the Giant Peach
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Even though the Ichabod section is well known, it has been overshadowed by Tim Burton's version in popularity)
Fun and Fancy Free
The Great Mouse Detective
Rescuers Down Under
Fantasia/2000

Not underrated in general, mostly just on this forum.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas - they should be regarded as part of the 1989-1994 classics but people I guess got tired of Disney by the mid-90's. And because of that Hunchback is yet to receive a proper release. I so want it on HD!!!

Speaking of The Parent Trap, here's a fun clip of Hayley Mills talking about Walt at last weekend's TCM Fest (hosted by Leonard Maltin):

Goliath wrote:Another one is Oliver & Company, which usually catches a lot of flack for its supposed sloppy animation, but I just don't see it. I think it has good animation, memorable characters, catchy songs, great sense of humor, wonderful voice cast etc. Okay, it doesn't come close to the 'big ones', but it's not as bad as its reputation would have you believe.
I remember you agreeing with me when I did my ... short-lived marathon back in September '09. But I think I've since changed my mind a bit. The more I watch it, the less impressed I am with it. If you stay away from it (hard to do with the best of Disney animation), watch it only once every 4 years, it's not so underwhelming. But I was just surfing through it sometime this last January and I actually started to feel myself getting queasy at just how lackluster it was. The bigger it gets, screenwise (I blew the size of it up on my computer and started feeling quite bad at how uncool it looks, visually- there's so little color and visual pizazz with the exception of a few shots, and somehow this made the story and the characters even less interesting), the more mundane and unattractive it is. As for the songs... I give it 2 out of 4. "Streets of Gold" is just plain awful, "Good Company" is sappy and apart from the real Little Mermaid horns and orchestra taking it into schmaltz territory (which I actually think is kind of charming, in a pre- ... Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson??[spelling?]-"Beauty and the Beast" Disney), it's not really any good. But "Why Should I Worry?" is excellent and ... lyrically, if in no other way, "Perfect Isn't Easy" is clever and highly amusing. Actually, it's the only Bette Midler song I like (I detest "Wind Beneath My Wings" - can't say that enough times).

I made these myself (I don't know how close they are to the MagicalScreencaps page):

Here's one of the coolest shots, period:

One of the prettiest shots, in my opinion, really reminds me of The Rescuers:

This one's always intrigued me:

And, of course, the movie's coolest scene:

Perhaps it was meant to loom gritty and dirty, like NYC!

My only problem with Oliver & Company is that the title character is so passive and bland.

^ Well, the character in the original novel is very passive as well, if I remember correctly. But that doesn't necessarily mean Disney couldn't have done more with it.

And as for songs, I actually liked Streets of Gold better than Good Company. But Why Should I Worry and Once Upon A Time In New York City are the strongest two.

I didn't care for the songs in Oliver and Company. Not a Billy Joel fan at all. I remember being 5/6 years old and despising Dodger/Dodger's songs in the film.

I don't know if we're including Pixar films in this but I always thought that Cars was not a bad film. Perhaps not my all time favorite Pixar film but definitely underrated. I say it's about halfway in the middle of my Pixar film list but NOT the bottom like for most people. Of course Cars 2 killed the franchise, but the concept of a feel-good sports film where the cars are the characters is a nice one-shot. I admit when I heard the premise it didn't sound at all appealing but when I finally saw it, I enjoyed it.

That must've been the nail in this thread back in May.

I think of all the artist-influenced soundtracks (Phil Collins with Brother Bear and Tarzan, Elton John with The Lion King, and Billy Joel with Oliver and Company), The Lion King's probably my least favorite. Which is bizarre, because I like Elton John in general.

But seriously, I grew up on Billy Joel . . . might sound strange now, but a couple of his albums helped me survive the terrors of junior high. And on top of that, finding out that he was doing music for an upcoming Disney movie made me all the more excited for it. While I did get the soundtrack (on cassette, lol) and some of the merchandise, I never did get to see it in the theaters like I'd wanted for either release.

And by missing out on it as a kid, I think I had pretty high expectations and set myself up for disappointment seeing it through an adult's eyes. I wish I had that nostalgia to fall back on.

I think Lion King is my favorite of these, but only for the score, not the actual songs (I generally like Elton John as well). Of these, my personal favorite would be Tarzan, but at the opposite end, my least favorite would be Brother Bear (funny how they're both Phil Collins, whom I actually like a lot).

Hunchback of Notre Dame (though as everyone said it is getting much more recognition these days)
Fantasia/2000 (I am glad to see at least that the Firebird piece is being acknowledged in the Disney Parks.)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (I'm pretty much with Doug Walker and TonyWDA on this one)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
The Black Cauldron (I can kind of recognize its flaws, but overall I kind of like it because God damn! it has John Hurt in it! Even in a bad movie, he just makes it worth watching!)
The Sword in the Stone
James and the Giant Peach
A Bug's Life
