Philosophical Thoughts / Brenders Fan Club / Dying Kittens

Post by Jules »

OH GOD I put this in the wrong topic, harumph! *waits for a mod to fix the error*

Just some random thoughts on UD and some UD members ...

It's easy to lurk on a forum and just watch as the dialogue unfolds. It's even easier to stop visiting outright and be forgotten. I find that UD has become somewhat more complicated since 2006, in that whereas when I joined I was able to slip into the community easily, I now find it hard to post simply because I feel that first someone has to brief me up on what's been happening on the forum in the last twelve months.

To me, the most striking things that seem to currently be occurring here are the Disney Duster attacks. I must admit I'm completely out of touch. I don't really know what Duster says to annoy other people simply because I falter the moment I face one of his posts, er- ... I mean essays. I sort of find the attacks amusing, in that they don't seem exactly mean ... apparently generated more by annoyance at Duster's beliefs. At the same time, I find Duster's unpopularity kinda sad, since I'm fond of him and have sweet memories of exchanging ultra-long emails in the past, as well as general fooling around on the boards.

As I've already said, I mostly lurk nowadays, but for the past two months I was entirely absent, in that I didn't even have a computer at home, let alone an internet connection (surprisingly I found that I didn't really miss my PC so much). Lurking has the unfortunate consequence of providing the lurker with all manner of information about others, whilst not divulging any information about the lurker. As a result, I've become familiar with certain users (e.g. Margos) while they do not know me. There's something about this form of one-way communication that almost seems parasitic. Of course, I'm not a parasite - the relationship just feels that way.

Despite the rarity of my visits on the site and forum, some UDers still leave an impression, such as:

1. Goliath - who in my mind's eye is tall, dark and stern, but endlessly fascinating.
2. Sotiris - who feels nice and close, being Mediterranean. I look forward to his updates on everything WDAS and animation in general, as he seems to scour every known animation website on the internet for the latest news. :)
3. Flanger-Hanger/SpringHeelJack - I've talked very little to these guys. I think I find it a little difficult to converse with them since they form a sort of online clique which I'm a little afraid to penetrate. I like them, though. They're funny.
4. SuperAurora - love the totally non-PC sense of humour.
5. Wonderlicious - Joe seems to have been more active this last year and half than usual. I love the way he always seems to bring the French language into the discussion somehow. Wondy, along with other such members as Escapay, Amy, Pedro, etc. is one of those with whom I feel the need to keep some contact. Yet I constantly fail at that - feeling guilty for not maintaining the contact. I should keep reminding myself to send the occassional Facebook message to any of those members. I've atoned for my sin somewhat by following Joe's "JarvWorld" blog, which I feel you all should be visiting. *finger wag finger wag* It's full of funny drawings. Just take a look at his mean-spirited card concepts. They're a hoot.

I miss 2099net and ichabod. They used to bring much needed sanity (and wit) to the forums.

I might follow-up this with some more thoughts. Bye, for now.

And I hope that wasn't too boring.

I can be fun and energetic, you know ... when I feel like it.

And a thousand pardons for the stupid thread title, but do you really think you'd have clicked here had it read something like "Philosophical Thoughts on the UD Community"?

Hey, wait ... that actually sounds pretty neat. Maybe I should try it sometime. 8)

Any community changes and evolves over time, and I know I've seen a lot of changes here since 2004. I think it's always been cool to be able to come back here at any given moment to catch up on not only Disney news, but with the people I've gotten to know over the years. New faces are cool too. :) I've sometimes been more of a lurker than a poster myself and have oddly felt more like a persona than an actual person. :p

At least I'm liked. :)

Well, 'fascinating' can be meant two ways. Either: "I think this guy is interesting" or: "I can't figure out what the fuck this guy is babbling about".

I, too, miss 2099net, even though we don't have any kind of special connection; I just enjoyed his posts and debating him. I also think Margos should be here more often, as should Escapay, enigmawing and of course blackcauldron85. (Luckily, Amy is the one UD'er with whom I keep in contact via e-mail.) And the forum would be a lot less fun without Disney Duster. Because, even though I still think he has a very distorted view of 'Disney', it's clear he has a big passion for it and we all appreciate that. :)

Dammit, Flanger, you're not supposed to talk about the ique-clay in ublic-pay.

So no, I have no idea what he means.

You'd probably fare better keeping in regular contact with me on Facebook than on UD. I check it more often, and for longer time, than I do UD these days.
Jules wrote:I miss 2099net and ichabod. They used to bring much needed sanity (and wit) to the forums.
Ditto. I still maintain a semi-regular contact with netty via e-mails, but usually only when one of us wants to talk about "Doctor Who" and hear the other's opinion. Would be great to see more of his posts in Disney Discussion. It certainly would get me to post more with my thoughts.
Jules wrote:And a thousand pardons for the stupid thread title, but do you really think you'd have clicked here had it read something like "Philosophical Thoughts on the UD Community"?

Actually, I personally prefer a topic all about "Philosophical Thoughts" over one about dying kittens. ;)
Sunny Wing wrote:I've sometimes been more of a lurker than a poster myself and have oddly felt more like a persona than an actual person.
I think everyone online is a persona rather than an actual person. It plays into the fantasy that you can be anyone you want, because to most people, you're just words on a page.

I'd certainly love to lose certain aspects of my UD persona, though. Namely the whole "slipcovers = bonfire" and "Search = Escapay" aspects, mainly because I'm not so hateful towards slipcovers anymore (I still see no need for them, but I've stopped my sound-and-fury tirades towards them) and I simply don't care anymore to search for old threads.
Wire Hanger wrote:I formed/am in a clique? Which one? Brenders, you know anything about this?
I remember either you or I suggested starting a SpringHeelJack fan club. And it's so elite that even Brendan joined it to support himself? Maybe that's the clique?

I'll agree that it's "fun" to an extent to read some of the topics. Forum drama is always a guilty pleasure, be it as a spectator or as a participant.

But I personally don't appreciate being told by Disney Duster how I'm supposed to feel about Disney according to his standards of what is and isn't Disney. I don't mind if he has a huge passion for Disney, but it's the way that passion is presented ("I know how Walt would feel", "That's unDisney and YOU know it but refuse to admit it", "Essence Essence Essence", "Those are good, but not classics with the magicalness and Disneyish Disneyness I was looking for", "You don't understand", "You STILL don't understand", "Nobody understands me, why must I explain myself again?", etc.) that really makes it harder for me to willingly enter Disney Discussion with the hopes of finding some stimulating and serious conversation.

I don't think DDuster's unpopular exactly. He seems more oldgen now and I don't think he has time to post as often. Like you, I don't think most people are "mean" to him (though there are exceptions), but sometimes I feel sympathy because it comes across like: whole forum vs. Disney Duster.

(To be a bit selfish here, I'm sometimes scared to think what image the posters on here have of me at this point.  Not pretty, I'm guessing. Not pretty at all. >>; I sometimes wish forums were camera-based or something, because most of what I say never sounds mean in real life. Context, I guess.)

I don't like those Kudos. I want the lowercase kind. Those are the things that certain friends' mothers would try to pass off as candy and little me would be like "Piss off, Mrs. G, bring on the Snickers."

Even though I make fun of Duster a lot, I actually am friends with Duster as we pm each other a lot. But even I have to say that his way of viewpoint is pretty ....

This is why arguing with him is pretty entertaining.

So glad to see you return, Julian Carter! Your posts have been missed. I've always envisioned you as a rather zany person, sort of Roald Dahl-esque. Please, stay!

The current state of the forums... is incredibly interesting. It's funny you come here all of a sudden with this post because I've just been thinking everyone seems to be different. It's like traits I've noticed in the past have been exacerbated. Some people are more off-the-wall, some a little more tired, some hilarious, some bitchier (in the best of ways, honestly I like it!), some just more annoying. But I do love my UD family. Always changing, always growing.

Personally, I've always tried to stay out of debates or arguments because I am the worst debater (and most inane) you can come across. Of course UD's helped with making me better at that though. I've also grown up on the boards quite a bit (I believe I'm probably the youngest regular...), and have tried to branch myself out from just appreciating Disney films, or recently for realizing that there’s more of a world out there, it doesn’t just end in the states. It’s sometimes worse, it’s sometimes better, but I’m glad I know about that now. And also, that I shouldn’t discriminate against people for who they love, or how they believe this world keeps spinning. I’m glad the UD community has allowed me to be an open individual.

Oh, and I fear I mentioned Julie Andrews too much.

But... you wanna know how I percieve everybody, mentally?

Escapay has and always will be Joel McHale to me. I don't know why, I've seen pictures of Albert, but it's true. Although, since I've been catching Merlin, I've tended to view you as Colin Morgan, too. --And on the forums, Escapay is our Mickey Mouse- he’s referenced all the time, even when not participating in discussion, his nicknames for posters become that person’s official nick name for anyone to use, people take your ideas and run with them (HoH, WIST’s and WTF’s). He’s a UD legend. I wonder how you feel about that?

Amy, I've seen too many pictures of her to come up with a mental depiction. But I imagine she has a sweet voice. For some reason, I've always placed a lot of attachment between one's character with one's voice, and Amy is always lovely.

Mark, I think of as a very cool, laid-back young Dutch guy. I've mentioned his character once to my friends, and they were very interested in your nationality and if you followed soccer. I don't, they do, so I don't remember what the name of the team is, but they said they were rooting for the Netherlands in the World Cup. So there you go.

Margos, who I've seen in a video, I have imagined as a very cool, awesome person as she is as evidenced by her posts.

Disney's Divinity, I've imagined as Disney Duster-lite. Not that they're even very similar, I think it's the double-d names and the fact that Divinty's favorite movie is TLM (no?) and Duster, I know, has a great appreciation for it.

I think of enigmawing as a humanized verison of her character.

Super Aurora- a badass who reminds me of several people I knew growing up and know now.

Panfan- cool guy, around my age. I would like to know him better, see him post more often.

disneyboy20022 has to be one of the nicest members on here and I love to read his posts.

Oh and am I the only one who wishes ariels’prince would come back?

Ahaha. I always like to point out that I was DD first.

Of course, I've come to dislike the name I chose. I wish I could go back and make it "TheGreenKnight" or something. I'm never good at picking them. DD just reminds me of breasts at this point.

Well, we certainly got our fair share of heated debates and even personal attacks/fights, but I still think you're one of the most interesting (in a good way) members of UD and I enjoy reading your thoughts.

Wait... you've seen me debating and you *still* think I'm laid-back?

Thank you, that's very kind. :) I don't follow soccer at all, but I always make an exception for the World Cup or the European Cup. I don't know why exactly, I just do. Must be in my Dutch blood. ;) I don't know we have a special 'name' for our team. Or it must be that we often simply refer to it as 'Oranje' (= 'Orange'), because we always play in orange; since our monarchy is called 'the House of Orange' (after William of Orange, who led our country to independence from Spain).

UmbrellaFish wrote:He’s a UD legend. I wonder how you feel about that?
Gee, thanks for putting me on the spot! :P And I don't think I ever made an official nickname for you, thus making me even more embarrassed! Some names simply come and go because I rarely get opportunity to use them (I tried to get "Jolly" to catch on for pap64, but it hasn't :/).

And to be fair, the nicknaming really started thanks to The Little Merman, who first called me "Scaps", which spearheaded the whole "give people nicknames" on the forums, as no one really bothered to before (at least to my knowledge...). I do like that some nicknames I've made have caught on, although I know some people dislike the names I gave them (when Ariel'sprince was here, he didn't like when I or anyone called him Sprince). I'm especially proud of the nicknames Wire Hanger and Sunny Wing. Mainly because of the people behind those names actually like them, as well as the fact that they're very likable people too.

To be honest, I'm surprised at being considered "legend" by even one person. I do know that Laz has called me and Ames the "Forum Saints" before, although I've never gotten a clear definition from him of what that title means, although I hope it means I get a Feast Day. Then everyone can eat at Earl of Sandwich. ;)

Still, longevity doesn't always equate quality, especially as my last year here has largely been less than I'd normally say on the forums (and I haven't even done a stupid "Escapay versus..." interview in months). But as you said earlier, the forums and the people in them are always changing, always growing. I'd probably classify myself as one of the "little more tired" these days, especially as my mind and time have gradually gone to other places (From Screen to Theme, The W.E.D.nesday Show, Saturday Matinee, Whips of Dole, school, real life) compared to past years here.

But looking back, it's kind of nice that there's a small corner of the internet where the Escapay persona is considered a "legend". That may seem a bit selfish or proud, but I'll celebrate my victories where I can. :P I don't exactly have ownership over the name, though I really should get that done one of these days. I've seriously considered retiring that moniker at times, but I've grown too fond of it to ever consider anything else.
UmbrellaFish wrote:Mark, I think of as a very cool, laid-back young Dutch guy.
I don't know what he takes before he starts writing on the forums, but in chat, he is definitely cool and laid-back. It's like two different people sometimes. Maybe because in a forum, a person can take time to write out a long and drawn out response and embellish it with the personal touch that says, "I'm replying to this! This is what I think!". But then in chat, when the time to type is more immediate, it comes across as much more relaxed. It really changed how I viewed Goliath, as he can seem very different in chat compared to forum.
UmbrellaFish wrote:Oh and am I the only one who wishes ariels’prince would come back?
He was...quite a character. I didn't get along with him at all, I think mainly because it was more enjoyable to fight with him than to actually have a conversation. But it would be...interesting if he did come back. I'm not against it, but I'm not exactly for it either.
