Do you think the Disney Treasures should be reissued?

Post by goofyestes »

Hi Everyone,
Just curious what everyone is thinking on this. I would like it simply because if one of my dvds ever got scratched or ruined, I would like to be able to buy another one. I bought them to watch and enjoy not because of value later. What do you think? Please tell me your reasons why, too.
Niki :)

If you live in R1-Land, you can register your Disney DVDs and be assured of a replacement should a nasty accident happen - in another forum recently somebody noted their Snow White DVD had been replaced for a nominal sum as part of the process.

But yes, they should be reissued, without the tins.

I absolutely think they should be re-issued, just as they have always re-issued all of their great features time and again over the years.

I think it's important for the longevity of this art form - animation - to make the heritage readily available.

Definitely. They should be treated like the other animated DVDs. From now on, they should be re-released without tins, and the whole limited issue business should be done away with. It's kind of fun for one run (kind of annoying too, though), but this should be it, as far as that goes.

Mainly because I payed big bucks for a few of them and I don't want to see someone who just woke up from a cave to get them for very little. If they are reissued they should be made in a way that they are not as good as the current ones.

They should definately be re-issued because a lot of people missed out before and I think everyone who wishes to own these deserve to have them too. But if that happens, they should not include tins, certificates of authenticity or lithos. This way those of us who payed a lot have the collectible side to this that will stay collectible, but everyone else will be able to own these.

Yes, they should re-issuse the Walt Disney Treasure Wave 1 and 2.
They should have the tins, certificates of authenticity and lithos.
Since I only have the DVD Box Set of all the first seven.
Well at least I have the DVD of the first two Waves. :D

If they re-issued them again with tins, lithos and COA's then the term limited edition means nothing. There would really be no point for COA's then. But they are collectible in the tin with lithos and when smething is a limited collectible like that not everybody gets to own it(at least in that collectible version).

If you paid big bucks for a few of them, it sounds like YOU'RE the one who woke up from a cave! :) Do you like the Treasures? I know I do -and I think that now taht awareness increases with each progressive wave, demand for the earlier releases being satisfied will in turn create demand for further waves.

Yes I do like them. I recently moved to america and thats when I found out about them. I just think that if you are going to make something so collectible just leave it that way. In my opinion they shouldn't have been limited in the first place, this is material that everyone should have access to in the future. I really hate Disney's vault idea, see I would like the two fantasias but I don't feel like spending 60 dollars for the set, I like Tarzan(cool box) but thats another 40 dollars.

They won't re-release the tins and numbered editions. I wouldn't mind seeing them released as tinless standard editions. However if they will start doing that, I hope they cut the numbers down to 50,000 - 75,000 for the tins and then no numbers for the others. Or those just waking up, as one put it :)

Because it says "limited edition", and it means nothing to collectors unless it's truely a rare item. I have spent years collecting limited release laserdiscs, such as the first "limited edition" gold collection:
http://www.geocities.com/disney_laserdiscs/gold.html

And the ultra rare 12 volume Japanese Gold collection:
http://www.geocities.com/disney_laserdiscs/dgd.html

As a collector, I want my limited editions to be something special. I even have the 2 different versions of Donald's Bee Pictures.

Well, the tins and inserts are the limited material. That may sound like a cop-out, but if the collector's market buys it (and it seems as though the majority of them have), then that's all it matters because it remains collectible, despite tin-less re-releases.

If it's rereleased, it should definitely not be done in limited numbers.

I say rerelease them. I bought them for content, not for showing off the cases. If you kids want to get selfish about them, then fine, but it's not YOUR disney. It's not like the shorts aren't going to be rereleased multible times over the next 30 years anyways. I can understand the notion that I paid alot, but the truth is the most I paid has been 25 for any of them and would hardly feel 'ripped off' if they were reissued. When the HD-DVD versions come out, the tin versions will be worth around what people are paying for the VHS collections.

Hey mvealf, that's a good site. Is it your own? You should post a link to it in your signature!

I would like to see them re-released, WITH the tins.

If they want the originals to be separated as "collectible", then the re-releases won't need a lithograph or something like that. Or they could make a slight change on the indentment on the tins, like add a small logo on the re-releases saying something like "Disney Classic Treasures". Then you would be able to tell if it was an original or a re-release :)

First of all, every Disney video is limited. That has been Disney's marketing plan all along. That way they are all collectable. Everything eventually goes out of print. People will always want to complete their collection of Masterpiece, Classics, Platinum, Gold, Black Diamond, original orange and yellow striped stuff, etc. That is how Disney makes money. I have no doubt that the individual cartoons and features will appear on future releases, and in HD-DVD, but they won't be exactly the same. Can you think of ANY collection of cartoon shorts that has been re-released years later? I doubt certain things will ever be released again, such as Victory Through Air Power and the rest of the war shorts. The individual cartoons have a better chance of appearing on later releases than entire collections.

I expect everything to get an rerelease anyhow, I don't expect the collections to be released as is, probably piecemeal style as before. I understand it might be disconcering to one with an elitist attitude about owning reproductions of other people's work and having their collection of copies become 'obsolete' , but to infer that reasoning to disallow another to enjoy art or entertainment is utterly criminal in my opinion. I understand Disney rotating their catalog of releases in and out of print...very few can buy all 44 animated classic dvds and various collections at the same time adn you don't want only the same 10 movies sold but the key word is rotate. Nothing will ever truly be out of print forever unless there is no demand. I really have a hard time beleiving that the On the Front Lines collection will be out of print forever. Were you upset when Pinnochio was reissued in 1999 when the promos for it's reissue in 1992 clearly stated "available for the last time this century" at least there is a case for false advertising there.

Why would anybody want these films just for themselves? Are you buying them for content or packaging? Would any of you buy the lithographs or the tins if they were sold on their own?

I'm not elitist, I would love for Disney's entire collection to be made permanently available to everyone. But if you look at the history of how Disney has released their material, they never release the same collection of shorts more than once. As a collector, I like finding old rare Disney items. Like it or not, this seems to be exactly how Disney wants to release their stuff, by catering to collectors. They create a demand by making it available for a limited time, then it's unavailable for years. I'm sure they sell more this way than by keeping it in constant circulation. This is the first time EVER that Victory Through Air Power has been released, so it's impossible to say if it will be released again. But, given Disney's history, I would bet it would be a very long time before it's released again, at least.

I never even thought about it. But I have bought every release. I like seeing the original unrestored print, then the THX remaster, and now the new Japanese remaster which blows away the U.S. THX print, and includes some "I'm No Fool" Jiminy shorts. They claimed that Fantasia was the last time the original would be released, then they released the roadshow edition, so technically they didn't lie (even though it is still censored).
