Tangled Discussion Part VI: Let the Drama continue...
I've always thought that line was clever. It is repetitive to emphasize how repetitive Rapunzel's life in the tower is...and it would take a long time to brush her hair. Very well written line.SpringHeelJack wrote:And neither does "And then I brush and brush and brush and brush my hair."Disney's Divinity wrote:"Almost there, almost there, almost there, almost there, almost there" does not a good song make.
Mind you, I wasn't all that impressed with the music of Tangled, but I did think that particular line was well thought out and in line with the story.

THIS! I totally agree.Sotiris wrote:Randy Newman does not deserve the recognition he gets. His talent is very limited. The particular song "We Belong Together" is excruciatingly bad and it sounded like every other Pixar song he ever wrote. Not to mention his awful voice makes you wanna cringe and yet somehow he believes he can sing.![]()
I have been cheering for Menken but I wouldn't mind if another song had won which actually deserved it. "Coming Home" was a pretty good song and it would be a good choice, and even"If I Rise" (despite that I find it kinda pretentious). Any other would be more fair that Newman's. That was a really awful song IMO.
I wouldn't mind if Newman gets awarded for something good he actually wrote (like "Almost There", "Friend on the Other Side", "When She Loved Me", and the songs for "Cats Don't Dance") but usually his work for Pixar sucks eggs.
His other Oscar-winning song "If I Didn't Have You" was equally painful. The love the Academy has for him is not fair or rational. I just don't get it. I'm not saying he's totally talentless; his work is sometimes "descent" but never "amazing" or "brilliant". There are like a gazillion better songwriters than him in Hollywood; it's not just Menken who is better than him.
You got the Alan Menken-song and some other fine songs as well, and they give the award to Randy Newman? I simply can't believe it. Why was he even nominated?
It seems like they are only awarding the film the song was featured in, and not the song itself. Newman's song was horribly bad.

Great. Who knows how long that will be? We all know that, like every other human on this planet, Alan's not gonna be around forever, and he's already in his early 60s.Sotiris wrote:The thing is, it will be long before Menken will have the chance to be nominated again for an Oscar snce he has no film projects in develpment as of now. Poor Alan? He has 8 academy awards. He's not upset I'm sure.DisneyJedi wrote:Great. Who knows how long that will be? What a morbid outlook. Alan Menken is one of the most celebrated of composers and lyricists in recent film and theatrical history, whether he wins Oscars or not. Besides, he's only 61 which hardly means that he is at death's door, it seems quite melodramatic to worry whether he will win another Oscar in his lifetime when he seems in perfect health.

Chris Sanders, talking 'bout the Awards and HTTYD...
Thought that was neat.
Anyway, it does suck that "I See the Light" didn't win, BUT-
At least we were able to see Zach and Mandy (and Alan) perform
and Tangled -So its the morning after the Oscars. Just to get it out of the way, we obviously didn't come away with gold, but seriously had a great time nonetheless.
They always say that just being nominated is an honor, and its true. This has been an amazing accomplishment for the artists that really made this movie.
Dean and I joined it in progress. The world, characters, and sets were mostly finished, which allowed everyone to concentrate on the story.
To have gone from where we started and end up with an Oscar nomination was spectacular, and I really want everyone who worked on this movie to take that in.
... But I wanted to also say that I wished our category had had enough entries to have expanded to five nominees.
Despicable Me and Tangled should have been there with us as well.
The character animation in Tangled was a triumph - a new high ground in CG animation.
And from sheer brilliance in story telling, Despicable Me should get more recognition. I have watched that movie ten times, and I watch it til the end every time.
That's what I go to the movies for. A great journey, and a great story. Well done

It sounds like he thinks Despicable Me is better than Tangled. He praised Tangled just for the animation but Despicable Me has "sheer brilliance in storytelling".HumorlessPoppycock wrote:But I wanted to also say that I wished our category had had enough entries to have expanded to five nominees.

Something that the majority of critics disagree with anyway.
Rotten Tomates: Tangled 90% Despicable Me 81%
Do you think it's because he's still bitter or angry with Disney/Pixar? (i.e. John Lasseter)?

From that, I don't get the impression that he's angry or bitter at all. It's the nature of the film industry that people move from company to company and he's remained successful away from Disney so I don't see why he would hold a grudge. None of us know what was said between Sanders and Lasseter so it's impossible to judge whether there is any personal animosity between the two.
I don't think he's showing any preference towards Despicable Me, I think he's just saying what he feels are the particular strengths of the two films and he doesn't say that he finds Tangled's story weak or inferior.

7 WORDS: YOU. GOT. TO. BE. FREAKING. KIDDING. ME!!!!
I'm bringing the NC to this:

LOOK WHO FINALLY GETS A FREAKIN' OSCAR FOR BEST SONG...A YEAR LATER AFTER HIS PATF SONG LOSES AND WINS AGAINST TANGLED!!!! OMG!!!!
Ok, rant over! Listein. I <3 Randy Newman and his music. "We Belong Together" is a great song, no wonder why it won. But, c'mon! I See the Light is a beautiful song, and you can't compare it to WBT. Plus, it's the only one that Tsngled got nominated for. Pixar, like always, must had bribe the Academy or something!
BTW: "I See the Light" performance wasn't bad. Mandy was okay, but REALLY whiny, but Zach and Alan were great. But, am I the only one who is annoyed how Zach didn't smile at Mandy after the performance?

Wow. Someone who actually agrees with me. Ironic that you mentioned Pixar bribing the Academy, b/c that's what I was figuring for how they always win.disneyprincess11 wrote:![]()

agree DisneyAnimation88. Sanders isn't ridiculing Tangled in any way or form. Sotiris just want to create some conspiracy rumor to protect his/her beloved Tangled and bad mouth anyone who doesn't give Tangled the highest praise possible.

The character animation is one of the biggest highlights of the movie - all those micro-expressions, 2D-like movements, that hair - I'm glad he singled it out!
regardless of what the Academy thinks,
from a technical standpoint Tangled is the best animated movie of the year. (my opinion, please don't hurt me)

It's immature to keep saying that Pixar are "bribing" the academy. The simple fact is that they keep winning awards as the academy judges Pixar to be the best in the different categories they are nominated in. You don't like it, fine, but suggesting they offer bribes is ridiculous and childish; a company that produces films of the quality that Pixar does will never have to resort to any kind of underhand tactics.DisneyJedi wrote:Wow. ^Yeah, I guess you're right that Pixar wouldn't bribe a completely biased academy. They're so biased, why not just reduce the nominee slits for Best Animated Movie to ONE movie, so they can give Pixar the awards ahead of time?
I mean, seriously. Do they even WATCH the other nominees for the category?! At least some of us take a look at other animated movies besides Pixar's to see if they're any good!
