That's one line (kind of clever, imo), mine was generally the whole song. I win.
Look, if you're to attack any song from TPATF why didn't you go for "Gonna Take You There"? I mean, come on, junior. And the phrase "Almost there" wasn't one line, it's a chorus. You return to it, and it's okay to do it. You lose.
"Ta ta ta taaaa! Look at me... I'm a snowman! I'm gonna go stand on someone's lawn if I don't get something to do around here pretty soon!"

Frankly, as much as I was hoping for Tangled to win, I just had a feeling it wouldn't. Not getting a silly gold statue doesn't reduce its value in my eyes (although I still think it was wrong to give HTTYD the nom for Best Animated film instead of Tangled, since TS3 was a lock and they had to include a foreign film for posterity....and y'know, maybe it was actually good or whatever  ). I think the huge success Tangled's been enjoying at the box office speaks for itself.

RIPJoeRanft wrote:"Ma Belle Evanagline" or "Friends on the Other Side" is more vintage "Disney magic" than any of Menkin's rather bland Tangled songs.
"Ma Belle Evangeline" is one of the most blah songs I've heard, and "Friends on the Other Side"'s only positive is Keith David. Next you'll be saying "Gonna Take You There" is better than "Be Our Guest," or "When I'm Human" is on the same level as "Bare Necessities." Nothing from TP&TF will ever be on a Disney "best of" CD--unless it's part of the princess line.

And "I See the Light" is nothing like "A Whole New World" except the fact that it's a duet.

You're right. "Part of That World" was repeated 15 times in its one song, and repeatedly.

Now that's a truly unfair understatement.

And that is, too. Menken's songs weren't bland at all. I'm sorry, but how dare you? :x

You're right. "Down in New Orleans" was pretty good. I guess he can do one out of 7 or so.

Well, he dares to have an opinion. That's how he dares.

Honestly, this was his weakest effort in a full-scale Disney musical. I don't know if the directors wanted less emphasis on the songs or if it was because Glenn Slater can't write decent lyrics to save his life, but compared to anything from "The Little Mermaid" to "Hercules", it was simply just not as good. He needs to find someone equal to Ashman, which is probably impossible, but lately he just seems to chose mediocre collaborators.

Another exception is background music > lyrics.

You're turning into a Duster. Your opinion is not what everyone should believe... If someone believes otherwise, then it isn't your place to decide if they are right or wrong, even if I do agree with you that Tangled's "I See The Light" is better than Newman's song.

The Oscars, in my opinion, mean absolutely nothing. I don't pay much attention to them because there are plenty of movies that do not get recognized by them that I adore very much. It's all based on how movies make you feel on a personal level.

^Well, excuuuuuuse me, Princess! I'm not the one who's treating TPatF's songs like an abusive parent talks down to their kid, telling them that they're worthless and are nothing.

I have my reason to. While I See the Light is beautiful, slow and magical, We Belong Together is a bit too upbeat and happy-go-lucky for my tastes.

Hyperbole is your friend. :P As far as soundtracks go, I don't hate TP&TF and I don't love Tangled. But there's no doubt in mind that Menken is a better composer than Newman--if I had to rank them.

But wow, you guys. A hot topic like that gives you such a rush.  Let's do that more often. :D

You said so yourself, "your tastes", look I wanted to for "I See the Light" to win too, but let's face the fact that it was not the best song of the bunch, though to be honest none of the nominated songs, including "We Belong Together", were all that special.

And I like both "We Belong Together" and "I See the Light", and I have no proble if one won over the other, I don't know why you have to take this whole thing so out of proportion.

Personally, I would have liked "I See The Light" to win, but I'm glad that Randy Newman finally won for his work with Disney. Actually, I would have been happy if "Coming Home" won as well.

Anything but "If I Rise". God I hate that song.

HTTYD is actually very good and is at least within 3 feet of Tangled quality. If anything, the real culprit was the sudden re-shortening of the nominees list for the category. I mean, it's not like they dont already go into massive overtime with the timeslot as is. What's one more nominee?

The whole ceremony ended up being same old same old. The only remote shake-up is Newman's win for Original Song.

This is actually Newman's SECOND Oscar win, the first one being 'If I Didn't Have You' from Monsters, Inc. Or did an alien wipe your memory?

Don't be rude to me. On The Academy Awards they said he previously won for Ragtime, not for Monsters. Inc. Not my fault I was misinformed.
