Cinderella: Royal Edition - first in new DVD line?

Post by steve »

Amazon.co.uk has just listed a Cinderella "Royal Edition" DVD with an April 4th release. (The product page can be found here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cinderella-DVD/ ... 698&sr=8-1)

Beyond the shockingly bad cover art, what's interesting is that the frame on the cover contains glass slippers, roses, apples, lamps, starfish and crowned frogs, suggesting that the Royal Edition isn't a standalone title but some sort of "line" containing Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Frog (full view below). There's also fans and hearts - Mulan and Alice in Wonderland? They hardly fit "Royal Edition", although that never stopped Disney Princess.

It's probably also important to note that Cinderella Royal Edition contains only 1 disc, with no bonus features listed other than a couple of music videos.

Is this Disney Home Entertainment UK making a quick buck before the Blu-ray? If so, it kind of waters down the already negligible significance of the Diamond Edition line. And what does this mean for the titles mentioned above if indeed this is the first in a new line? (I know Disney's various "lines" are nothing more than empty marketing labels that rarely reflect the quality of the disc or its content, but I thought it was worth discussing.)

Sounds to me like it will / could only apply to Disney films featuring Princesses, Kings, etc.

Ooooh...

I didn't comment on this in the other thread with the discussion of this title, but as this seems to be a UK-only release, it must be a special tie-in for the royal wedding.

Guess this is definatley happening then, just checked HMV and they have it for pre-order as well. This seems like an awful idea and completely pointless seeing as Cinderella is receiving the Diamond treatment next year. This is just like their Musical Masterpiece Line which lasted all of three titles (Aladdin, Pocahontas and Mulan) which were also basically bare bone releases. Why is Disney so inconsistent with their releases!

Oh gosh it looks so tacky. I can't decide if the collector in me would really need to import this release or not.

It's obviously released to coincide with the Royal Wedding.

I think the horrible, horrible border is actually just taken from generic Disney Princess line borders. All of the art I am almost positive I have seen before, I know I've seen the clipart of Cinderella and the Prince and that title before (except now the title's in pink...and I have to admit I think that part's pretty).

Also steve I have to point out the Diamond Line does deliver on it's name in at least one way - it has the movies that are considered the diamonds, or very best, of Disney. They are at least they're most popular. I for one would say something like The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of their best films, but still, somehow, not the same as a Diamond (even if only for popularity, or maybe it's about how iconic of Disney a Diamond film should be).

I think it would only be worthy of collecting as a way to have very odd things Disney has done. Otherwise, I would not collect it, but it is all up tp your perosnal tastes. I wouldn't waste my money, this isn't for hardcore Disney fans!

The clip art doesn't even make sense. You obviously don't need to put on the shoe to know that girl is Cinderella!

Yeah I pretty much agree.. I'm not sure yet. What I think is specifically aggravating about the cover is that pink isn't even prominent in the movies overall color scheme.. and they used that walkway/bridge in the background from the third movie. I know there are plenty of beautiful scenes to pull from the original so I'm not sure why they chose to use a weak design from the third. This whole release is curious, awkward and almost too terrible to pass up.

Bonus Features:

"A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" - Music Video performed by Disney Channel "Circle of Stars"
"Every Girl Can Be a Princess" - Music Video Featuring Disney’s Animated Princesses
Was a music video for the song "Every Girl Can Be a Princess" ever released before?

Oh gawd! Maybe this is only funny to me because I live in the US and not the UK. I mean I'd almost think this was a bootleg if I ever saw this on the street and didn't see it here. At least you Europeans almost always get better cover art than we do on your "serious" releases. :P

That and a Valentine. Add something corny such as "You fit my idea of a best friend, Valentine." :D

If this ever came to fruition…I would be so angry. It would only be a way for Disney to further the perception that these films are only for--were made only for--little girls, that they are pieces of crap on the level of Miley Cyrus, and that everyone else should be ashamed of liking them.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I am really surprised by this.

Cinderella's Diamond Edition is only next year and this will surely rob its sales since it has been OOP for awhile. I don't think anyone who will buy this will care about extras so basically loss of sales for the real release.

Furthermore, what's the use of the vault if they can randomly grab a title and throw it out with no effort? Will the transfer be the same?
