Until he throws up on your shoes and falls half-asleep in the backseat, where he proceeds to drool all over the window and then cracks it when he hits his head against it just to see how it feels. Fed up, you drop him off somewhere and go home, only to find him the next morning at your house, curled up like a ball and sleeping in the nude right behind the begonias. When you wake him up, he has no recollection of how he got there or where his clothes went, and after you clean him up and give him some spare clothes, you take him to breakfast at IHOP, where the waitress gives him one look, slaps him, and gives back his clothes.

On-topic: my best friend? I guess Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable, if they were a few years older. They've shown they're loyal, protective of each other, honest... Well, they're great friends.

I am an adventurous and sometimes silly person so I could see being friends with:

-Ariel, Jane, and Rapunzel: All three are adventurous and open to trying new things and exploring new places. All three have their silly moments. And I could draw/paint with Jane and Rapunzel, and sing and dance with Ariel.

-Genie: He is so silly and so much fun. We would certainly be quick friends!

-Thomas O' Malley, always loved him. He would be a fun animal friend. I was obsessed with him as a kid. Even had an "Alley Katz" plush that looked similar to him so I named it that and pretended he was O' Malley.

Actually his name is Octavius. I know that's what she says in the movie, and Wikipedia says,

"Cinderella names him "Octavius," and calls him "Gus" for short. This is an example of an inside joke among the writers and (some) viewers of the movie. Gus is actually short for Augustus. In ancient Rome, Octavius was re-named Augustus when he became Caesar. Hence Octavius - Augustus - Gus."

Yep, Cinderella knows her history and can be humorous with it!

I never understood that joke until I took Ancient History this year, and we began talking about Caesar Augustus. Then it clicked! It really should of have clicked sooner, though, since that wasn't the first time I had studied him.

It didn't click for me until I actually read that from Wikipedia, so don't feel bad, you got it alot quicker without any help or anyone spelling it out for you.

When I was little I thought she just said a rather strange name and that it was funny because it was unexpected and too sophisticated for that mouse, but now it's doubly funny. I also wonder if her calling the mice by royal names and then Lucifer "your majesty" has to do with how she served others and then become royal and was served by others in return. And Octavius is a Roman name and Perrault who wrote Cinderella was I think fighting with intellectuals about how new literature needn't be based on the classic Roman stories and styles like they thought at the time, so he wrote very different stories like fairy tales. Or something, that might not be right at all, don't quote me on that. I mean, uh, Gus is cute, hehe!

So Cinderella is secretly a smart girl! :)

I never made that connection, but I never questioned it either.

I never even wondered about it, because I've never understood the strange American custom of calling anybody by a 'short' name that either isn't shorter at all or doesn't even come close to the actual name. I mean, why is Robert called 'Bob'; why is John called 'Jack'; why is James called 'Jim'? I don't understand the habit and that's why I never wondered about Gus.

I've always wondered that as well, so I googled "John nickname Jack" and got this. Rather interesting:

Nicknames: How John Became Jack and Other Odd Nicknames
  • Have you ever wondered how Jack became a nickname for John? Apart from the first letter, the two names have nothing in common. There are several names in the English language that have no apparent correlation with the standard nickname. Here are some of those names and how the nickname came about.

    John-Jack

One of the most famous bearers of this name, John F. Kennedy, was known to friends and family as "Jack." But I wonder if he knew how much history that name had? John is a name with history stretching back far into Biblical times. However, during medieval times, the name John was altered slightly in the Germanic tongues to Jankin or Jackin. Out of that, we get the nickname Jack.

    Richard-Dick

Just as with the previous name, medieval times brought about Dick as a nickname for Richard. The Normans, descendents of Vikings who resided in northern France, had a unique way of trilling their "r" sounds. When the English attempted to pronounce Richard as the Normans did, it was reported that they could not quite do it correctly and the "r" came off sounding like a "d". Thus Dick became a pet name for Richard.

    Henry-Hank

Just as with John, Hank was derived from Hankin, a form of Jankin. Originally Hank was a nickname for John but over time it became closely associated with Henry.

    Henry-Harry

Harry was the Medieval English form of the Germanic name, Heimiric or Henry.

    James-Jim, Jimmy

The medieval pet form of James was Jim. Many of the names in medieval Europe were altered like this because of the conflicts in languages. In England for a time, there were contradictory Romance languages of the Norman French and the harsher, guttural languages of the Germanic tribes: the Danes, the Saxons, and the Celts. When one couldn't pronounce the name exactly, a new name was born. But the original name never went away completely. This is also how you get Molly as a nickname for Mary.

    Margaret-Megan, Meg, Peggy

Margaret was derived from a Romance language (Latin) so it did not translate easily into Welsh (a Germanic-derived language.) Megan was the form the Welsh used and Meg/Peg/Peggy were nicknames for Megan. Today, most use Megan as a formal name but some do use it as a nickname for Margaret.

    Sarah-Sadie, Sally

Sadie most likely came about as a nickname for Sarah based on the medieval English attempt to pronounce the Norman trilled "r". (See Richard-Dick) The "r" came off as a "d" sound in English. Sally probably came about due to similar circumstances. Some Germanic languages may have attempted the trilled "r" and it came off as an "l" sound.

    Edward-Ted, Teddy

Again, Edward was derived from the Norman French and English/Germanic speakers interpreted it as Ted or Teddy.

    Susannah-Sukie

Susannah is also a Romance language name and Sukie was the closest pronunciation the Germanic tribes could associate.

The list is extensive and most can be traced back to the conflict in the Romance languages versus the Germanic tongues. So if you are curious about a name and nickname pairing, check to see what language they are derived from. And most likely, you will have found your answer.

Well, I would hope and like to think so! At least she knows stuff, thanks for saying that. I just don't know if that was really common knowledge back in her time or the 50's or what, but she still knows some things at least. By any chance did you mean something by saying "secretly", like she pretends to be dumb or something, lol?

Goliath, I totally wondered those things too, though, and I'm an American! Thanks Escapay, too!

When I read the first started reading the first post of this thread, I was disgusted at how superficial the poster was. But after I read about how Hercules was in the running for male best bud, I thought, "Wait a second..." And I looked at who the poster was. And I was so embarrassed. I didn't think I was that gullible. The formal heading didn't even tip me off!

I did question it before. I always wondered why she was dumb enough to spend her whole life cleaning for her stepfamily (not that I don't like Cinderella, of course. She's on my Top 10 Heroines list). But that is a surprising bit of history she knows there. Cinderella must have homeschooled herself in her spare time. :P That brings her up quite a bit in my opinion. Thanks, DisneyDuster, for that bit of trivia!

My human Disney best friend would be Mulan. She and I have similar personalities. Alice would be runner up, if she weren't so young. Maybe Belle, instead.

My animal Disney best friend would be Todd. He's very loyal and wouldn't give up on you. Runner-up: Maximus, because he's pure awesomeness. :P

Well, not that she plays "dumb" but that she doesn't flaunt what she knows so you have to read between the lines to see how smart she is. In order to know history like that she must read said history, and I can't imagine her step-family would care for her to be spending her leisure time in books, so I bet she kept any learning she did in secret. So while she is not playing dumb, it is not common knowledge that she is well-read and smart enough to create a clever play on names.

Thanks Rapunzel and Linden. I don't know if the artists gave too much thought to making Cinderella smart or if it was just a joke they threw in without thinking, but I'm glad you do think she's smart, and I think so too, because I know they did intend to at least make her smarter and funnier than Snow White. They never said the word "smarter" but they didn't have to, Walt Disney implied she wasn't "simple" like Snow White was. I also wonder if her father taught her these things or if she heard things on the streets or from the birds, but I think she would have to have books like you said.

Snow White is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!! She goes into the dwarfs cottage and tells all the animals to be quiet and the she freaks out like she stepped on a nail and then it turns out she got excited for a "cute little chair" and sits in it while doing a little dance that reminds me of a Fake Russian drag queen with a mustache I went to high school with. She hilar! Oh and she is pure and naive not simple. I hate when poeple bash my homegirl Snow White and I are tight she helped me out at the big Pumpkin Beatdown in 98. I'll never forget it.

Anyways for buddies I always thought Ursula was awesome! We could go to the bars drink, hit on guys and then go to a chinese buffet for a late night snack. Madam Mim would also be fun! Belle is nerdy and we would have fun. And Thomas O'Malley =D

I should have said funny "on purpose" which Cinderella tries to be. Also, Walt Disney himself said Snow White was simple,

"Snow White is a kind, simple little girl who believed in wishing and waiting for her Prince Charming to come along. On the other hand, Cinderella was more practical. She believed in dreams all right but she also believed in doing something about them. When the Prince Charming didn't come along, she went right over to the palace and got him."

Well I would assume he means simple as in not high matinence. She really was just kind and easy going. Atleast that's how I take it personally haha.

And Cinderella went the castle after her Fairy Godmother helped her. Not taking anything away from Cindy I love them both but Snow White might not have known where her prince lived haha.

Characters I might be best friends with: Megara, Ariel, Tiana and Rapunzel. Both Megara and Tiana have a cynical humor, but you could have serious conversations with them, and you could make fun out of misery; Ariel and Rapunzel would both make life interesting, because they're so exuberant and out-going. I've had many Ariel friends, but Megara friends are usually more long-term. I imagine Cinderella and Pocahontas would be too serious for me.

But if you're talking about just for a laugh: Ursula, Lady Cluck, Merlin & Archimedes, Merriweather, and Charlotte.
