Oscar Nominations: Good News and Bad News

Post by Semaj »

Good News: Toy Story 3 got the Best Picture nomination! It'll be the third animated feature to earn that honor. It also got a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay. :)

Bad News: Tangled didn't get the Best Animated Feature nomination. Having more to do with there being only three noms this year. :(

It only got one, for the song "I See the Light".

It's disappointing about Tangled but you have to admit Toy Story 3 deserves it's nominations. I doubt it will win Best Picture but I did think it is easily one of the best films of the past year.

I'm not shocked, but I am a little disappointed for Tangled. On the bright side, Tangled has been an incredible success for Disney and losing this Best Animated Feature nom won't change anything. :)

There shall be blood if it loses its song nomination, though. ;)

As for Toy Story 3 being nominated for BP, personally, while I think it's a good film, I don't think it's as shining of an example of Pixar's excellence as Wall-E or Up have been. However, any animated film being nominated for Best Picture is a great thing, and I hope that someday soon, we will get to see one win the award, deservedly, be it Disney or Pixar or Dreamworks or an independent.

I know. That's such a bad song and Newman's voice makes it so much worse. Seriously, his voice is so bad, I want to break the radio when a song of his is on...

I don't understand why he keeps getting nominations. Why does the Academy like him so much when his talent is clearly so limited. There are a gazillion songwriters better than him in Hollywood. His only Oscar winning song "If I Didn't Have You" is probably one of the worst in the history of the Best Song category.

Look, I'm not saying that he's completely talentless. He's made a few good songs here and there (when he doesn't sing them) but the majority of his work is not up to standard.

I am so extremely angry and disappointed right now about Tangled being snubbed. I was completely unprepared for this. The possibility of Tangled not being nominated for Best Animated Feature had never even crossed my mind.

I haven't seen The Illusionist yet so can't comment on it.

I think How To Train Your Dragon was the best animated movie of the year, and happy it was nominated for Best Score too.

Surprisingly not that disappointed Tangled wasn't nominated... I liked it better than Toy Story 3, but I knew from the beginning that was going to be the Academy's favourite... Tangled was definitely the best Disney film since 1999's Tarzan, but for me didn't QUITE live up to the standards from those days.

Well...I'm surprised that Tangled didn't get nominated for best animated feature...and kinda ticked....but since it didn't....I hope How To Train Your Dragon gets the win....no offense to Toy Story 3, I loved that movie and I love that franchise, however I think Dreamworks and Chris Sanders should win for How To Train Your Dragon, Give credit where credit is due, and In My opinion How to Train Your Dragon was much more creative and new than Toy Story 3 (I love Toy Story 3, though it pains me to say when compared to How to Train your Dragon...TS3 Falls Flat...i'd even say Dragon deserves the Oscar Nod over Tangled....I can't speak for The Illusionist as I haven't seen or heard about this movie or a trailer for that matter...I think if there were more slots in the category Tangled and Despicable Me would have been added. Now Let's all hope Tangled Wins Best song with I see the Light, and honestly i'm speechless at the song from Toy Story getting nominated, We belong together? I liked the Gypsy Kings' version of You've got a friend in me but that I wouldn't say should be nominated per say...I do like Randy Newman and his songs...some are better and some are not....I like his style sometimes but I see the light in my opinion is a much stronger song than We Belong Together....

I agree for the most part. HTTYD was a great film, but I feel like TS3 is favored. Considering it was also nominated for Best overall, I think it's given that it'll win Best Animated. Who knows, though! I'm sort of happy Despicable Me wasn't nominated. I had a lot of problems with that film, as cute as it was. The minions were only comic relief and convenient plot advancers.. and the relationship with the three girls and the lead went sweet way too quickly. All that aside, it's nice that HTTYD was recognized!

...so did you actually see the "stupid foreign film" or are you just assuming because it beat out "Tangled" it must automatically be awful?

I'm as upset as Tangled not being nominated as the rest of us here, but seriously, don't go claiming that it didn't deserve the nomination just because it's "some foreign film." Coming from a "foreigner" of sorts (British), your wording comes across as quite ignorant and offensive, to be honest.

If anything, I'm annoyed that Toy Story 3 is hogging two categories (as did Up), as the Animated Feature category was installed to give animated features, which would otherwise be snubbed, more recognition. A dual nomination to some extent renders the point of the award as useless. I equally wish that the Academy would simply create "Best Musical/Comedy" and "Best Drama" categories à la the Golden Globes, but that's another story. The overall bias from the Academy towards Pixarfrankly does push me into thinking that Pixar is overrated, which is really a shame, as they are a good studio and have made some really good films. But the problem with any awards ceremony is that most people are going to be left disappointed no matter what.

The so-called stupid foreign film deserved his nomination way more than Tangled (which I love also!). People like you are the reason why most Europeans think all Americans are stupid, uneducated, arrogant douchebags who wrongly think they were the hub of the universe.

Way to show your smart side. :thumb: Maybe it's a good film? I don't know, I haven't seen it either.

I'm annoyed that How To Train Your Dragon beat out Tangled. I was pretty disappointed with HTTYD and thought that Tangled was loads better. Still, I know a lot of people felt differently and I respect that. Although many of us love Tangled because it's traditional Disney done (mostly) right, it still followed a pretty familiar Disney formula and that's what may have hurt it in the end.

Wondy,Wondy, Wondy. I normally agree with you. Maybe I'm just too much of a TS3 fangirl to be rational and objective, but, let's face it. It has all the chance in the world of winning Best Animated Feature, but not so much Best Picture. And I really feel that, not only does it deserve to be nominated for Best Picture (especially these days with the 10 nominations), it would also be a shame if it lost Best Animated Picture.

I don't think you'll be offended if I say that the "Best Drama"/"Best Comedy" change would be a horrible idea. (:tink:) I always feels that those categories cheapen the movies (just as the Best Animated Feature category sort of does, too). I don't know what I'm saying, exactly. It's fine for the Golden Globes, but somehow wouldn't be right at the Oscars. But maybe that's just me being afraid of change.

The point is:

Toy Story 3= Great movie = 5 nominations
Tangled= Great movie = 1 nomination

I don´t understand.
Pixar is soooooooooo overrated. Yes, they make good films, but come on, they aren't God.

And.......Best Adapted Screenplay? COME ON :o :o :o

I'm feeling sorry for Disney and Tangled, it's to bad one of the greatest Disney-films in years don't get more nominations, but at least it has done amazing at the box office and with the critics. Alan Menken should win for best song though!

I'm hoping Toy Story 3 wins for best animated picture.

I'm happy that Alice in Wonderland got nominated for art direction, costume design and visual effects. But what about TRON: Legacy?! It should have been nominated in all those categories as well. It's horrible that it was not nominated for visual effects! Well, at least it was nominated (sound editing).
Favorite Disney-movies: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Tangled, Frozen, Pirates, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Tron, Oz The Great and Powerful
