Animation Revelation

Post by Avaitor »

The greatest animation related community in the world. A crazy group of weirdos try to discuss as many different subjects related to the animation industry as they can. You get some fun stuff to read, some painful stuff, and a lot of arguments in between.

I'll update you guys with our great blogs, but here's the new, improved forum to check out for now.

Kind of. I'm one of the three admins, and I came up with a lot of it. I didn't do most of the work, however. That's what you can thank Foggle for.

New blog series is up where we review some really bad stuff, and Foggle already has part of his work done.

You guys should like these, but I'm not having much fun with my work now.

Wouldn't this be classed as 'spam' and against forum rules. I thought it was expressly against the rules to advertise your own site / forum.

I very tentatively asked in relation to my own site a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get a response, but then when reading the guidelines, I saw it was against the rules, so I didn't proceed any further.

Maybe I'm missing something here. :?

I've just signed up as well. My username's the same as it is on my ProBoards' site; No-Personality.

I'm not sure it's against the rules- I think if the links were trying to get us to buy something then it would be.

Advertising Your Site?
----Don't bother posting to tell us about your website, whether or not it is related to Disney, without first getting clearance via e-mail from the site administrator, which will likely only be given in extreme circumstances. Unsolicited advertising, spamming, and recruiting members to assist you with your website are all not permitted here, and will be deleted. If you have registered only to advertise your website, then your account will likely be banned. If you would like to advertise your site, you may purchase space above or below the forums at a reasonable cost through Google and/or AdBrite. Regular members are permitted to include a link to their own website in their profile (which also appears beneath their posts) - this is acceptable and should be sufficient if any reader wants to visit it.
I would say that this is quite explicit.

This is why I didn't continue to post any details about my own site, because as far as I can tell, it's against the rules.

Surely we can't have rules for one and not for the other?

BellesPrince, even though you accused me of everything that's rotten, I stood up for you when Disney Duster was lecturing you about not doing double posts. He acted like a moderator and you were pissed off because of that. But now I regret standing up for you, as you are now essentially doing just the same: pretending to be a moderator. What do you care whether or not he's promoting his site? I've promoted a site of a friend of mine in my signature as well, and one time even a commercial site. If it's out of line, a moderator will call him upon it. No need for you to kiss and tell.

Is it? I've seen a couple of threads here promote blogs before, and I though since I have a fairly active one that would interest some users, I'd make a thread for it.

If that's the case, Luke or another staff member can lock the thread and we can be on our way.

Ouch . . . enough with the lectures already. Let the mods decide how to enforce the rules here; no reason to take matters into your own hands.

. . .

Anyway, I've registered. :)

Whuuuuuuuuuu...?

Everyone at one point has posted links to their websites, forums, blogs and such, and no harm has come out of that.

Get over yourself Goliath for one minute will you.

People were ragging on me for no reason.

Here we have what appears to be a flagrant disregard for forum rules. I asked a couple of weeks ago whether it was okay to post details about my website, and nobody bothered to answer me. I found that specific rule later on, and so I didn't post any links or information about it, aside from the link in my profile.

Then, a couple of weeks later, I see someone is posting a link not just to another website (in point of fact, my site is just a photo website and doesn't have any similarity to this one), but they're posting links to a competing forum.

Surely that breaks those rules. I'm just wondering what I've walked into with this site, where there seems to be rules for one and not for the other, and nobody is treated equally.

Disregarding the 3-page argument between Alan and memnv, UD has a thread dedicated to people promoting their own forums or websites. It's rarely used, as most simply make a linking signature image or include a link in their profile. But for anyone who wants to see some classic bickering...

Post on My Forum (and Mine and Mine!)

Ironically, the very existence of the thread undermines the whole "don't make a thread about your forum" guideline, which isn't as strictly enforced as other rules anyway. Threads devoted to other forums have been created before, but have either been summarily ignored or only garnered a few replies. The UD Mods can't always catch every instance when a Posting Guideline is broken (hence why some post-on-my-forum threads created haven't been merged or locked), which is why it's always encouraged to PM or e-mail them rather than deputizing one's self and stepping in.

The current moderating team is 2099net, AwallaceUNC, CJ, and pinkrenata, all four of which have their e-mails listed in their profile. Since members who joined after June 2006 don't have PM-sending capabilities, e-mailing a moderator is the best option (or simply making an inquiry in the Feedback Forum). And of course, people may still contact Luke (either via PM or e-mail), but it's recommended to do so if it's a very serious issue (i.e. continued problems with another member, very serious personal attacks, if the site gets hacked, etc.). He is extremely busy with reviews and managing the site, so he doesn't have time to handle many forum issues as he has in the past. The mods that are often quickest to respond to a PM or e-mail is 2099net and CJ. Sometimes even just mentioning in a post "Hey mods, could you do something about this?" helps as the mod either reads it immediately and can act on it, or another member reads it and then PM's/e-mails the mod, to show that additional people share the concern.

Okay, I thought perhaps I should clarify where I was coming from in this thread, because, after thinking about it, it does perhaps sound a bit like I'm doing the same thing I was complaining about others doing to me the other day, but that wasn't really what I was trying to do.

I posted an enquiry about a week or so ago asking whether it was permitted to place links to a website on the forum. I didn't have any replies to that, and then, I read the guidelines (which I posted above), which state you shouldn't be doing that.

This thread then came along which is doing exactly that.

Now, just to clarify, I have no problem whatsoever with people sharing links to other websites, and I can't really see why it should be an issue. I just felt the subject needed clarifying, because you shouldn't have a rule for one and not for another.

I wasn't intending to put on a psuedo-moderator hat, and if it came across that way, I apologise.

Anyway, in view of this, and in view of comments about my desktops the other day. What I thought might be an idea is to start a thread in the Disney Parks section where I can post that kind of thing. My site is specifically a Disneyland Paris Castmember tribute site, and it's predominantly a photo / desktop site. I would imagine some members of this board would find it of interest, and it would avoid me clogging up the desktop section or the characters photo section in the Disney Parks board.

And I think it's probably more appropriate in the Disney Parks section.

Hopefully this is an agreeable solution all around.

The rules about promoting other sites often fall into a gray area, as I understand it. Basically, the rule is in place so that people don't register just so they can spam about their own site. However, if a regular member who contributes often to forum discussions feels that it is appropriate to share a link to another website, I'm pretty sure I can speak for all the mods in saying that we can let that slide.

That said, BellesPrince, I have noticed that you refer to your website often in posts, and also link to it in your signature. That's totally fine, and the best way to promote it. If people are interested, they will check it out without having to create a thread dedicated to it.

Also, please be easy on the moderators if they aren't able to catch every little issue. We're busy peeps. The only reason I've been around so much lately is because my life's gone down the toilet after breaking my foot two weeks ago. :P

Well, I was just thinking of setting up a thread in the parks section to explain what the site is all about. Perhaps give people a heads up about updates and post desktops and photo's. I was just a little bit conscious that I'd kind of taken over the character photo's and desktops threads here, and I didn't want people feeling pushed out.

I think other people had suggested that I start a thread for the desktops, so I thought that seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

Are you saying that I shouldn't do this. Will I be in breach of forum rules if I do?

And if so, why am I being told not to do this if other website threads are being allowed?

I suppose you could argue that I'm promoting the site. But really, what I was thinking about was more about sharing desktops and character photo's. If this was all in one place, then presumably that would avoid the comments I had earlier this week - because those people could choose to ignore the thread. But, if you think those are better being posted as I have been doing, then fair enough.

At the end of the day, I'm just trying to do the right thing here, and all I'm asking is to be treated fairly.

If you feel that creating a thread of your character pics in the Theme Parks section would add to the site, go right ahead! What's the worst thing we're going to do to you?

Ban me??? :o

All I was thinking was a bit more background about what my site was about. Probably regular updates with some of the pictures I'm working on, and I'd be very interested to see constructive critiques on stuff - as long as there aren't mean spirited remarks about castmembers (you may think people wouldn't do this, but I've seen it happen before).

And also updates when I've been to Disneyland Paris with photo's, and updates.

Hopefully nothing deserving of a ban.
