Hmmm, not really. Are you really, seriously suggesting that those of us who buy Blu Ray combo packs are buying them because there's a DVD included. Most of those DVD's probably never, ever get popped off their hubs.Luke wrote:You could just as easily state 100% of all copies of some of those titles sold were on DVD.

I started buying the combo packs in anticipation of getting a Blu-ray player, but wanting to be able to watch the film immediately on DVD. And now that I have a Blu-ray player, I'm still more likely to pop in the DVD, simply because it's much more comfortable and convenient right now. I imagine my Blu discs will get much more attention when I get a stand alone player and hi-def TV in my living room.BellesPrince wrote:Hmmm, not really. I dunno...I've been happy to loan out a number of movies without really losing anything from my home library. I've played a couple bundled digital copies on plane trips, and a few of the DVDs on roadtrips with the kids. Honestly, I think what I like best about the bundles I've bought is I've been able to simultaneously upgrade *and* replace DVDs left behind with the ex in the divorce. At any rate, it's probably an overstatement to say the "vast majority" have gone unused---at least insofar as it concerns Disney products purchased by families with children.

No more of an overstatement than to claim that those Blu Ray sales should be counted as 100% DVD sales. The prime reason for the purchase is the Blu Ray. The DVD or digital copy is something that occassionally proves useful for some people, but are useless for many - although, they do make nice coasters.
The standard, non-3D combo pack is now up for pre-order at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Blu-ray/d ... B004G6009U
No release date officially announced yet, but Blu-ray.com lists the release as March 15, 2011.

when a co worker visited the states last year, i asked her to pick up the toy story 3 4-disc bundle with blu, dvd and digital. the dvd and digital got removed immediately and put away, and the blus for ts1 and 2 put in their place. the only reason i wanted the pack was to put all 3 movies in the same case.
im hoping multi blu cases will be available soon so i can condense some of my single discs into one case to save space.

I think you misunderstood him. He was replying to someone who stated that all those copies of Blu-Ray/DVD packs sold showed Blu-Ray was outselling DVD--when there could be just as many people buying for the DVD that bought the Blu-Ray/DVD packs. Many of those Blu-Rays have probably got little to no use at this point.BellesPrince wrote:Hmmm, not really. Point is, with a Blu-Ray/DVD pack, you can't tell which side is outselling, because both Blu-Ray and DVD are being sold at once.

No, I didn't misunderstand. The implication was that there were people buying combo packs for the DVD, which is ridiculous. Anyone just wanting the DVD would just buy the cheaper DVD only pack. If Blu Ray combo packs are outselling DVD only versions, the only explanation is that people are either buying them for the Blu Ray now, or intend to upgrade to Blu Ray in the future. Either way, in some cases, Blu Ray is starting to overtake DVD in sales, and I don't see how anyone can argue against that.Disney's Divinity wrote:I think you misunderstood him. Aren’t there some cases (with Disney anyway) where they’ve stopped selling DVD-only products? And, in some cases (SW Diamond), the DVD-only version is sold months later after most average consumers have probably bought what was available for them (the Blu-Ray + DVD pack). I have no idea, I don’t really keep up with these things.BellesPrince wrote: No, I didn't misunderstand. Didn’t know these Blu/DVD topics could be like politics…

Well, it's not months. For the animated classics, they have a window of about 7 weeks in the US, in the UK I think it's about a month before the DVD only version goes on sale.
There are some studio's where the Blu Ray release is the only one, eg. Alien Anthology, the forthcoming Star Wars Saga. But then, these titles have had a number of DVD releases in the past, which are still available, so there isn't really any point.

With exclusive coupons, in-store + online deals and bundled savings, a lot of the Blu-ray / DVD Combo packs are the same price, if not cheaper, than the standalone DVD. I know for a fact that at Target and on Amazon.com, Inception was the exact same price for the Blu-ray / DVD Combo as it was for the DVD in its first sales week. Disney has made it a regular occurance to include coupons with their Combo Packs, and if multiple releases come out in the same week, many stores will do bundle deals. I remember getting The Sorcerer's Apprentice and the Fantasia 2-Movie Combo packs the week they released and, with coupons and deals, paying a mere $25 + tax for both movies.BellesPrince wrote:

I've been an ardent Blu-ray supporter since buying my player in 2008, but I have to agree with Luke in saying that these Combo Packs that supposedly outsell their standard DVD counterparts, with sales statistics to back it up, could easily be saying that 100% of sales were on DVD. I always buy a Combo Pack whenever I can, because I like knowing I can sell / trade the DVD copy with my roommates, or in some cases, having a second copy of the film that I can take with me when I travel. I can honestly say, for 1 out of every 3 Combo Packs I purchase, I sell the DVD to my roommates or to my local MovieStop. Another 1 out of every 3 DVD's in my Combo Packs are traded between friends or local trade stores.
Simply put - a lot more people buy the Combo Packs because of its inclusion of a seperate DVD than you give consumers credit for.

I agree with that; I started buying the combo packs in mid-2010 and at the time I didn't have an HDTV or Blu-ray player and had absolutely no plans of getting either. However, by Christmas 2010 I had both the HDTV and Blu-ray player, but I am still ONLY buying the combo packs as I don't have a Blu-ray player in any other room besides my living room, and I like having that extra DVD copy to watch either in my kitchen or bedroom.Just Myself wrote:Simply put - a lot more people buy the Combo Packs because of its inclusion of a seperate DVD than you give consumers credit for.
Maybe someday I'll have an HDTV/Blu-ray player in each room I have a television in, but for the time being I am loving the combo packs! So far, I haven't bought one stand-alone Blu-ray title, all of my Blu-rays have a DVD partner!
I think there is supposed to be some sort of official announcement today regarding the release date on Tangled on home video in the US. DVDizzy.com had posted this previously on the main page:
"While we can't share much before the official consumer announce date of January 19th, we can tell you that this computer-animated musical fairy tale will be available long before Easter in a featherweight single-disc DVD at a newly-increased list price, a 2-disc Blu-ray + DVD combo, and a 4-disc Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy combo pack."
Blu-ray.com already has a release date listed as March 15, so I am assuming that will probably be made official.

I had heard that the date was changed to March 29, so I guess that was true. I am not even sure if March 15 was even official in the first place, it might have just been speculation.
Either way, we are heading into a period of a bunch of releases in a short time span:
February 1 - Alice in Wonderland
February 8 - Enchanted, Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, etc. re-released as combo packs
March 1 - Bambi
March 29 - Tangled
April 12 - The Incredibles' Blu-ray debut & Cars re-released as combo pack

Nausicaa and Tales from Earthsea on March 8, also. Tron and Tron: Legacy are probably in Spring too, probably late April.MJW wrote:I had heard that the date was changed to March 29, so I guess that was true.
