I funnelled the "Entertainment" catagory money in my budget into buying home theater hardware this year and haven't had much left for movie theater going. There are a few films left to be released in theatres and on Blu-ray that I'm looking forward to, but the following is a ranking of the 2010 releases I have seen so far:
(Out of 5 stars)
1. Toy Story 3 ****1/2
I was very satisfied with the outcome for this third outing in the Toy Story series. After Toy Story 2 lost some of the wit of the first and went a little heavy on philosophical ponderings, 3 strikes a balance and becomes the most poignant of the trilogy. It is more sentimental than it needs to be, but I don't mind it so much since the characters are so endearing.
2. Inception ****
Though overrated, Inception is a solidly constructed blockbuster and, unlike a lot of summer films, is more rewarding with your mind's participation.
3. How to Train Your Dragon ***1/2
Although relying on a few family movie conventions, its probably the best DreamWorks has put out and very encouraging (at least until I see Megamind).
4. Unstoppable ***
Sloppily put together, but the human interest level is high and the actors do a good job, so I found it easy to invest myself. No way this will be in my top 10 by Oscar time.
5. Alice in Wonderland **1/2
Outstanding for its realization of Wonderland but unexceptional in every other way, this was a dissapointment.
6. Iron Man 2 **
I did not like Iron Man, and I liked Iron Man 2 even less. Of all Marvel's franchises, this has to be the least sustainable.
7. Robin Hood **
Unfortunate outcome from a production that involved a high-caliber cast and crew. So, so boring.
8. Knight & Day *1/2
The story has been overdone and the stars are less appealing than ever. A real clunker.
Documentaries: Hubble 3D ****
An awesome IMAX experience. I don't really want to see CGI in a doc like this, but aside from that, the footage is made for the big screen.

1. Toy Story 3 (June 18)- 10/10
Only the most exciting, poignant film ever from Pixar that blew me away with its stunning visuals, exciting plot, and fitting closure to one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Seriously, everything was just absolutely perfect, and if it weren't for the Lion King's darnded awesomeness it'd be my favorite movie ever. The characters are just so great, and I really can't give enough thanks to Pixar for making such a wonderful movie.
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (December 10)- 9/10
I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, and I consider it even better than the phenomenal, but overly dramatized Prince Caspian. The visuals were spectacular, the acting was great, and Narnia's just an overall appealing place. The only thing that felt off to me was the beginning, which felt overly rushed and not very well introducing the character of Eustace. However, the rest of it certainly made up for it, and it ended up being absolutely magical, retaining the magic of the first 2 despite rocky beginnings. Again, the ending song was beautiful, and my favorite of the great assortment of This is Home, Wunderkind, the Call, and There's a Place for Us.
3. Alice in Wonderland (March 5)- 8/10
A wonderful, visually appealing version of the original Lewis Carroll story that had very much potential to be the event of the year, but ended up being far too madly rushed and not fleshing out the characters. Otherwise, great film.
That's it, I guess....

I'm not gonna rank them as there are a few I still haven't seen like Tangled, but here are my standouts:
Hot Tub Time Machine - The creators captured the 80s ski hill culture very well - will become annual viewing for me when ski season starts up.
Clash of the Titans - Good effects, good fight scenes, but the script could've used a little more polishing.
Toy Story 3 - a great wrap-up to the series.
Oceans - excellent follow-up to earth. But, the narraration could've used some more facts.
Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos - finally got to see the only Disneynauter movie that wasn't released theatrically in North America. Nice movie. I learned some stuff about Flamingos I didn't know before.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - turned out to be a fun popcorn flick despite the poor marketing of the movie. I wasn't too keen on seeing it but was pleasantly surprised.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - same comment as for Prince of Persia
Shrek The Final Chapter - definitely better than the 3rd.
The A-Team - fun movie, saw it twice at the theater, just to see a piece of home on the big screen.
Iron Man 2 - alright follow-up. Could've been a little better.
The Karate Kid - a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it. All the child actors did a good job.
Inception - Excellent, but complex. requires multiple viewings.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - I really enjoyed this one.
Secretariat - another good one by Disney. Loved Malkovich in this.
RED - Great. Again loved Malkovich in this.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - The darkest in the series. Good installment. Looking forward to the finale next year.
Still to be seen:
Tangled
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
TRON: Legacy
True Grit
I'm hoping to see Tangled tonight, and maybe Dawn Treader tomorrow.
I was actually let-down by Alice in Wonderland, but, I will give it a 2nd chance one of these days. I thought the concept was strange for this one - it was supposed to be a sequel, but it also wasn't a sequel, just strange.

Updated List (forgot Tink):
1. Toy Story 3 (June 18th)- 10/10
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (December 10th)- 9/10
3. Alice in Wonderland (March 5th)- 8/10
A wonderful, visually appealing version of the original Lewis Carroll story that had very much potential to be the event of the year, but ended up being far too madly rushed and not fleshing out the characters. Otherwise, great film.
4. Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (September 21st)- 8/10
A truly sweet film that I can't really place above Alice due to somewhat lack of originality, but otherwise, thumbs up!

5. True Grit ***
A serviceable adaptation that is less entertaining than the humorous narrative of the book but is more accurate in is portrayals of the characters than the previous version.
6. Alice in Wonderland **1/2
Outstanding for its realization of Wonderland but unexceptional in every other way, this was a dissapointment.
7. Iron Man 2 **
I did not like Iron Man, and I liked Iron Man 2 even less. Of all Marvel's franchises, this has to be the least sustainable.
8. Robin Hood **
Unfortunate outcome from a production that involved a high-caliber cast and crew. So, so boring.
9. Knight & Day *1/2
The story has been overdone and the stars are less appealing than ever. A real clunker.
Documentaries: Hubble 3D ****
An awesome IMAX experience. I don't really want to see CGI in a doc like this, but aside from that, the footage is made for the big screen.[/quote]

I don't really see too many new movies every year, but here are my top five:
1. Tangled: It exceeded my expectations and gave me hope for Disney.
2. Toy Story 3: The series wrapped up fairly well. I liked it a lot, but I was also disappointed. I thought it lacked the wit of the first and relied on kiddy jokes. But the heartbreaking (for me) ending made up for that. It was very nice to see my favourite characters in the world one last time.
3. True Grit: A very good adaptation of the Portis novel. I enjoyed it very much and thought this version *got* the characters more than the John Wayne version (which I also like). Good performances all around and gorgeous cinematography. It's probably a better movie than Toy Story 3, but I'm attached to Toy Story 3 more.
4. How to Train Your Dragon: A pleasant surprise. I really liked the interaction between Hiccup and Toothless. Even though I didn't think Toothless was physically cute, I adored him by the end of the movie. Not perfect, though. I wasn't exactly pleased with the climax or with any of the vikings, save Hiccup and Astrid. I did like the ending. Very sweet.
5. Alice in Wonderland: I hate the fact that this movie shares the same name as the book, but that aside, it was fairly enjoyable. The visuals were interesting, and I did like the somewhat clichéd character growth of Alice. It was exciting, too. (The title thing really bothers me, though. My cousins watched the Disney animated Alice in Wonderland and kept expecting Alice to kill something.
At the end, they both looked at me and said, "That's it?!".)
Yet to see: Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I (just finished the book), and Tron: Legacy.

"Fifteen years from now, when people are talking about 3-D, they will talk about the business before 'Monsters vs. Aliens' and the business after 'Monsters vs. Aliens.' It's the line in the sand." - Greg Foster, IMAX chairman and president
