Zachary Levi is on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to discuss a little bit about Tangled. I'm sure there will be a clip by tomorrow. I thought it was extra cool the band played the theme to I've Got a Dream (aka the Pub song) :)

Listen, you are all hit by nostalgia. If you could just open your head for new things you will notice that Tangled has great songs + superb score in it.
You can't say that 'Be our guest' doesn't slow the movie, or 'Part of your world'. (actually, with the former, I always get the trigger to fastforward). Though both songs affect the movie in some way.

I think that in Tangled the songs come right in time - none of them are slowing the movie, nor trying to hard.
The part where she leaves the tower - this is where she needs to sing, and you can hear her excitement - it's awsome! Or the part where she meets Gothel in the woods... This gives me the chills..
And they are all beautiful! I mean, you should just watch it again, or hear it on youtube. It's just not fair that you critisize them, since you've heard them once! Many of you have seen B&TB like hundred times!!!

'I see the light' IS an 'it' song. And it's a great song. Very touching. And all the lyrics just contribute to the film's flowingness, I love them (who's responsible for this?).

I find the score itself better than Aladdin's for example, which I can't recall music that caught my ear. 'Kingdom Celebration', on the contrary, will always be in my heart.
But we should just stop those comparisons, because this is what ruining the excitement of the movie, and it never ends.

I loved it! I think I could watch this movie over and over again, and I know many of you would do it too.

Another thing I have to say:
Why aren't people here talking about the movie itself? I mean the qualities of it, likes, dislikes.. I see here very few that touch this issue. Many have just marked it with a V and moved on to the next movie. Many just want more and more pictures, videogames etc. But there is never a serious discussion about the movie itself. Too bad guys..

DingleHopper, I agree with you on everything, but the score, i still felt there were too many moments that sounded to generic adventure film to me, and that they didn't use motifs from the actual musical numbers enough.

Though I am pretty sure that the soundtrack doesn't feature every piece of scoring from the movie, so I may be judging it on just the action oriented score pieces featured on the sountrack

Ugh...my local theater (a 16 plex) is dropping Tangled down to one measly 1 p.m. show starting tomorrow. I understand that they need to make room for more movies and even getting rid of the late late shows, but this is doing better at the box office than 5 other movies they are keeping at full showings throughout the day. Grrr. It's looking like this movie will just barely touch $150 million now IF that once theaters start dropping it.

Thanks for the info!

That's not what we're saying, because they don't. But if we wanted to, we could say every damn thing we please! :)

Every opinion is fair. Your opinion is not more 'fair' than ours.

Why should everybody *have* to be excited about the movie? I mean, I said it was a great film, but everybody is entitled to their own opinions.

Er... that was what we were doing, before you came in to say all our opinions weren't fair.

Just wondering if anyone knew about this or had seen it themselves, as I didn't notice Pinocchio in the scene. I've only seen the movie once, so maybe some of you that went multiple times were able to catch it?

Either way, it's pretty neat!
I haven't seen it (I never was able to catch it,) but I've heard about it. I also heard someone talking about seeing Pumba during that scene too. I wasn't able to find that one either... :(

I had read about Pinnochio in the Snuggly Duckling before i saw the film in theaters so when i went to see the film i paid extra close attention and saw it! i saw pinocchio sitting (he was a wooden doll there, and not alive).

While I agree nostalgia DOES indeed have an impact on how people view this film, I don't think it totally colours their entire opinion of it. I mean, regarding the "it" song, I feel an "it" song is one that feels like the "heart" of the film, and one where the viewer has a "wow, this is amazing!" feeling when listening to the song and seeing the sequence, and most importantly, just want to sing the song themsevles cuz it was so good. "Go the Distance" was this for me. It's epic, and I just want to sing it. For Mulan, I think "I'll Make A Man Out of You" was this; watching it, it feels amazing, and you just want to sing the song. Heck, at my highschool, everyone used to love singing that song! "A Whole New World" was this for me--amazing sequence, beautiful song; magical. People love singing that song. I don't try to compare these songs, either; they're all wonderful "it" songs that are close to my heart, and good in their own way. "I See the Light", however, though it has a beautiful sequence, I just don't find myself wanting to sing the song. I try not to compare to the other songs, and listen to it alone, but I just don't find it something I want to burst out and sing a lot. I don't see little kids wanting to sing it as they do other Disney tunes, and I actually find that rather sad. I wanted the song to be amazing, and though I do really like it...it just doesn't feel like "it" song material. Nostalgia may play a part, of course, and I'm sure it does, but an "it" song (imo) is one that's both amazing and feels like the centerpiece of the film, and one I can see kids singing...and I just can't see kids singing "I See the Light".

Though, on this whole business, I think I was wrong about Tangled not having an "it" song. I think it sort of does, but it's different. "Kingdom Dance" has the thrill of an "it" song, and I definitely want to sing it. The only problem is, it doesn't have lyrics, so...it's rather hard for anyone to sing it. But if it were a lyrical song, I bet ya little kids would be singing it.

Hehe, that was terribly rambly. I agree that things get better with each viewing, and I agree that the songs in Tangled aren't so bad. Nostalgia's definitely playing a part (but I don't think it's a HUGE part), so I hope one day the music will be looked upon more favourably. :)

And, late, I know, but...
I think Rapunzel would have touched snow on her window sill. Although I guess she wouldn't have run around in it.
Well, we don't know for sure if there's snow in Rapunzel's kingdom. But you just gave me an idea--it'd be so cute to have little Rapunzel touching snow on the window sill for the first time and asking what it was... D'awww.

I personally don’t feel the music slows down the movie (except perhaps “I See The Light” and “I’ve Got A Dream,” which both serve other purposes that were necessary). Still, I think it would be fair to say that there’s nothing like “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” “Belle,” “The Bells of Notre Dame,” “Savages” or “The Gospel Truth” in this film. None of the songs actually move the story, so much as spend time on what you’ve already been given. I don’t see this as necessarily a bad thing, because “Part of That World” makes you feel much more for Ariel than you would have otherwise.

My problem is that the songs just don’t do their job very well. “When Will My Life Begin,” for example, is not on the same level as other songs of that type in other Menken films, and you don’t feel anymore strongly about Rapunzel’s story arc than you would have if it hadn’t been there. Tbh, I even enjoyed “Almost There” more than “WWMLB,” and that one kind of just repeats lines (although, as I’ve said before, “Almost There” isn’t really an I Want song). I do love the part Rapunzel sings after she leaves the tower, and some of the lyrics are cute in the main version of the song, but it doesn’t really stick with me. And I’ve listened to the soundtrack several times now. There’s nothing there that you’re going to be humming to yourself, no matter how many times you’ve listened to it. Where with most other Disney films, you only have to watch once and its already stuck in your head.

“Mother Knows Best,” its reprise, and “I See The Light” fill their roles pretty well, but something about the lyrics and the melodies just don’t stick with me. I’ve listed to “MKB” several times (because I do enjoy a diva-fest, and Donna Murphy is the best in the cast), but it doesn’t ever reach the heights of other great villain songs. It’s decent, yes, and it services the movie well, but I don’t feel wrong in saying that it just isn’t great. “IStL,” the it song, is even boring at times. That might just be because the vocals of Moore and Levi are so bland though.

I do agree that the score is pretty good. I noticed “Kingdom Dance” and “The Tear Heals” when I first watched the film.

Um, tell that to my brain...! Really, "I See the Light" and "When Will My Life Begin" have gone into rotation with my other favorite Disney songs. Love them! I mean, yes, I'm a big Mandy fan, but I think even besides that, I would still love the songs just as much.

Just me, I guess.

Just to add, for me personally, I don’t think nostalgia has anything to do with it. I absolutely adored “That’s How You Know” in Enchanted when I first heard it (I wanted to pause and rewind that 1500 times; I'm sure I came close). It's become a part of my top ten of all Disney songs. I even enjoyed "Little Patch of Heaven" from HOTR pretty well. On the reverse, I don't think everything old is great--Hercules definitely has some flaws lyrically (though I think nearly any song from it would outshine Tangled) and Mulan is pretty weak, too (not Menken, but still). I’m not opposed to new things, but I can’t force myself to find something memorable.

I thought the movie was pretty good, though I would not rank it in my top ten favorite Disney films. All the characters were decent, the animation was great and the songs were just fine (though, again, not Disney's best).

These were the previews that played before Tangled:

:D =Will see it :) = Will rent :P = Will avoid at all costs

Kung Fu Panda 2 :)
Rio = :P
Cars 2 :D
Gnomeo and Juliet :P
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never :P :P
Kung Fu Panda 2 :D (I always get dragged to see Dreamworks movies. I saw Shrek 4, How to Train Your Dragon and Megamind all this year.)
Rio Probably :) (It looks ok. The newest trailer made it look more like a
romantic comedy then anything.
Cars 2 :D (DUH! It's a Pixar movie! Even if I didn't like the first one, it doesn't mean that it wasn't improved.
Gnomeo and Juliet :) (I'm really not picky when it comes to romantic movies XD)
Justin Bieber :p (Why the-I'm just not even asking.)

I think what we're seeing here as far as score is that Menken has stepped away from the bigger, more sweeping scores we're familiar with for the "classic" princesses; "Mother Knows Best" and "When Will My Life Begin (Reprise)" are the songs that comes closest to the theatricality of some of Menken's earlier works, such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (which I personally think is Menken's best score, hands down).

Hey. Do you think he'd write a good Scottish score? I mean Pixars' Brave(possibly the next Disney Princess movie-Second CGI one, first Pixar one, first Scottish one-) is coming out in 2012... :P
