In fear of derailing this thread and eventually having it locked, Bill Maher is right about some things, but I disagree with others.Goliath wrote:A Christmas Message from Bill Maher

The people he shows in this video are far from being a representation of spirituality and faith. The main truth he speaks of is that, yes, people go ape sh*it over a stupid sweater, and that Opray should instead be investing money on helping others out rather than just giving away stuff. I am also of the belief that many Churches and religions DO operate on money, and that the more they manipulate people into it, the more money they will receive in the end (on a side, every time I tell this to my parents they often claim I am just being pessimistic, even though there are A TON of investigations about how Churches operate).
But I don't believe that spirituality=greed. To me, spirituality means that you understand that there is more to life beyond a physical existence and thus gaining a knowledge out of it. Can some religions twist that into an image that evokes greed? Absolutely, but they are far from being a true representative. Even Bill Maher said it, we can't claim to understand it. So, spirituality ain't the embodiment of greed either.
One last thing, Bill Maher made it look like the people who are genuinely happy to receive money or something else are greedy by nature. Once again, his statement is too broad. It is likely that the people being overly excited are indeed happy to get "more stuff". But, what if some of them ARE happy to receive that money? What if that money will help them achieve a goal in mind, for others and for themselves?
I'll be honest with ya, I am BROKE right now. If I were to win a million dollars, a new house, a trip or anything right now I would be ecstatic. Why? Because with that money, I could pay off loans from myself and my parents, I can give my parents and my sister's family a house, try to get a business started and such.
Does that make me selfish and greedy? I like to think not. I know that owning anything will never give you a status, regardless of what society says. If I win something, that's great, but at the end of the day I am still just a silly, Puertorican guy that got lucky that one time. Also, I am not jealous of anyone that is "above me" in terms of money and material possessions. Money eventually goes away, and when you die you can't take it with you. I rather die knowing that in my life I gained the love and respect of many wonderful people and worry over what is going to happen to my car or money (hell, I would just donate it to a cause I can trust).
If anything I've learned that money and power will never buy you the love and respect of others, nor give you class. Just check this lady out:

All the money in the world will never change the fact that deep down she is a terrible human being.
No offense as I think his message is a good one: that many religions often operate on material stuff rather than our true spirituality. But I think he is being too broad in his statements, making him sound more cynical rather than someone that just wants to deliver a solid message.
