OK, so this is a good place to post... I have seen the light! I have finally started collecting Studio Ghibli films! Hooray! I'm not sure what it was that made me change my mind about them, but I'm just glad I'm trying to find the time and opportunity to sit down and watch them all.
So far, I've seen:
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
Pom Poko
Howl's Moving Castle
Ponyo
...and I've also seen Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but they were so long ago that I don't remember too much of the details....

Hm, in what language... that's a good question. I can remember answering a similar question from a thread a year ago.
I know there are a lot of die-hard anime fans out there who want to watch everything coming from Japan in its original language, but I'm not going to lie I really do prefer seeing the English versions of Ghibli films. They may be inferior to the Japanese versions, but I always listen to the English audio on animated films -no exceptions. Live-action is different, but for animated films it's probably always going to be English for me. So far I think Disney has done a great job on the Ghibli dubs (sans Miley Cyrus' little sister, who I find very annoying in Ponyo), no cuts made whatsoever. It really does help that John Lasseter oversees the localization, I think.
Disney does own the distribution rights to Only Yesterday, I wonder why they haven't released it...? Would be nice if they did. Ghibli and Disney Japan are chronologically remastering all of the studio's films, so maybe once they reach the film there, Disney US will release it too. Though the subject matter of Only Yesterday will probably elevate it to Touchstone Pictures... Come to think of it. That's probably the reason they haven't released it yet.

I've heard a rumor that it hasn't been released in USA because a couple of flashback scenes being uncomfortable for families to watch. The protagonist, Taeko, has flashbacks to age 10 throughout the movie. One is about girls in her class getting their periods. In another, Taeko goes to a hot springs resort with her grandmother and Taeko is shown in the nude next a spring before going into it. Other nude people relax in and around the spring strategically arranged so unmentionables are covered up.Duckburger wrote:Disney does own the distribution rights to Only Yesterday, I wonder why they haven't released it...? My Favourites ranked (number one at the top):
Howl's Moving Castle*
The Cat Returns*
Ponyo*
Laputa - Castle in the Sky*
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away*
Whisper of the Heart*
My Neighbour Totoro*
Kiki's Delivery Service*
Porco Rosso
Tales from EarthSea*
Grave of the Fireflies*
The list may not be that accurate, because after the first 4 or 5 I wasn't sure where to rank them.
*owns DVD - I'm waiting for JB HI-FI to have a deal on Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke. Currently NZ$28.99 (though I haven't checked this week), but on special they're usually $16 to $19 when they're in stock.

I don't believe that this has been posted, but Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Tales From Earthsea will be released March 8th, on Blu-ray and DVD respectively.

With Tales From Earthsea being rated PG-13, I'm hoping that a release of Princess Mononoke will also be released soon (which was supposed to be released a few years ago, but I guess that never materialized).

They're not Disney's films. Disney can't release any Ghibli films on BD that Ghibli has yet to release on BD in Japan.SWillie! wrote:I wonder why they're being so random about what they're releasing on blu-ray and what they're only releasing on DVD. If only for the sake of uniformity, I wish they'd release them all on Blu.
