The Golden Girls is one of the best sitcoms to ever be on television. The chemistry of the 4 women was flawless (at least at the time) which helped make the show such a success. The show tackled many of serious issues and made countless hilarious jokes, both of which were often times scene as "taboo" at the time. The show was groundbreaking and highly entertaining, which is probably why it is still in syndication today for a whole new audience to fall in love with. I have the entire series, seasons 1 - 7, in my DVD library, and it is the only television show I own (next will be Will and Grace).

It is hard to pick a favorite character because they all have episodes in which they really shine. However, if I had to pick which Golden Girl was my favorite, I would probably have to say Dorothy.

Some of my favorite episodes include:
-The Pilot
-The one where they appear on the game show "Grab That Dough"
-The one where Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose are arrested for Prostitution
-The murder mystery episode
-The one where Dorothy's friend fakes her death on the tennis court
-The one where Blanche and Sophia fight over a man, Fidel
-Many of the "flashback" episodes
-and many MANY more

I used to love the show when I was a kid. But then I got bored with it. Now I basically like The Nanny and Designing Women more. Thanks to Lifetime, of course. Now... eh, I'll watch it if there's nothing else on. But it often feels a bit dated. Or old fashioned. Or something. I don't know why I don't like it now as much as I used to. But...

Some of my favorite episodes include:

-The episode where Rose has a play Henny-Penny and is disappointed to find out the chickens/birds get eaten by the fox

-The episode where Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche stay up late and watch Psycho

-The "Dorothy said you'd want something crotchless" episode! (A Christmas episode of 1 sort or another, but I think it will be eternally known as the "crotchless" joke episode for me)

-The murder mystery episode

-The 'Sophia buys a Boxer' episode

-The episode where Blanche dates a handyman and while he is just crazy about her, she's worrying the whole time that he's 'not good enough' for her / they're too different

-The episode where Blanche's brother brings home the Cop boyfriend

-The first part of the 2-part episode where Stan has a "Monkey" companion (the funniest GG episode I think I've ever seen!)

I'm a huge fan of this show too, as anyone who has read my reviews knows. I consider it to be one of the best sitcoms ever made and certainly one of my top five favorites. I've picked my 70 favorite episodes (well, actually, that list would be different if not limited to ten per season) in my reviews. Maybe I should make some sort of ultimate list of favorite episodes, but that might require some rewatching.

I love Golden Girls. I have the complete series. It's the perfect thing to watch if you've had a crummy day, because it will cheer you up. Dorothy is my favorite, probably because of her quick, witty remarks. But like Rose, I'm also originally from Minnesota, though my hometown has a much higher average IQ level! Some of my favorite episodes are where Dorothy, Blanche and Rose all get the flu right before a big banquet, where Dorothy asks a man to dinner who turns out to be a priest, where the girls all lust after a famous actor, and where a couple detectives work out of their house to try to catch their criminal neighbors (a young George Clooney is in that one!).

Hey-- does anybody know where I can see, or find a detailed description about the 1988 Royal Variety Performance skit the cast of Golden Girls did?

I remember, a little less than ten years ago, Lifetime aired a retrospective on The Golden Girls series and it had a quick snippet of this skit, but I've always wanted to see it in its entirety.

Thanks in advance!

I e-mailed the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund asking them if there was a place to watch the 1988 RVP online, and if not, if they could tell me what the sketch was about. If/when I hear back from them, I'll post it here! Their website only has a list of the performers for that year's RVP. The girls performed after a-ha during the second half of the program.

It would have been great if the entire sketch were included on the Season Four DVD, since it was originally broadcast during that season. Alas, there are plenty of things that could have been included on the various DVDs that weren't.

Unfortunately, all I got was a form letter that basically said "BBC and ITV don't produce DVDs of the program for sale online or in shops" and they completely disregarded my question about what the sketch was about. Which makes sense, I doubt the person who sent the form e-mail would know what a 22-year-old sketch was about off the top of her head. :(

The search continues...

That's too bad, then. Oh well, eventually something will be found out about this sketch. Back to Google, I guess!

I seem to recall hearing/reading somewhere that the Royal Variety performance was an encore of the scene in the show where Blanche discovers that looking down into a mirror causes your face to appear puffier....and Dorothy says "Only on your back, then you look as though you've had a facelift..."

I found it! Or... some of it!

It's from The Golden Girls: Their Greatest Moments, which was the retrospective Lifetime aired about the show in 2003!-

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aqW61ZEtxuY?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aqW61ZEtxuY?fs ... 2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

They begin talking about the Royal Variety Performance at 8:46, and they show actual clips from it starting at about 9:10. From what I can gather, the skit is about the girls taking a trip to England! :D

I saw this a few days ago, and I thought I'd drop it here. :P

I can't believe I haven't posted in this (I've been watching this show daily since I was in middle school), but Dorothy's my favorite character. I have this show on almost all the time, along with Murder, She Wrote. Sometimes I'll throw on W&G or Mama's Family, too. If I had to pick a least favorite, it'd be Rose because she's the stock dumb character, but they make up for it by giving her some of the most hilarious moments of the series, imo.

My favorite moments for each character:
Dorothy: The Rose is a slut episode is hilarious ("Stand back, she's gonna blow!" / "She is the slut." / "The slut is dead, long live the slut.") "She made it so the eyes would never close again. She made Mrs. Doolittle look like a morphine addict!" "What the hell goes on at night in this house?!" The scene where she confronts Sophia about running off her prom date and never telling her. "Well--" / "Liar!!!" To Edie McClurg--"I am Pussy Cat I--you are Pussy Cat II." Rose: "That's what the crow said--!" / "GET OUT!!!" Another to Rose: "And you are what we call in the revenge business--next."
Sophia: Diving off the roof of Blanche's grandmother's house. "'Try some,' right. Like it's some big experiment. Like you have no idea what it tastes like. Like you don't shovel it in by the pound every chance you get!" Talking about her letter from a chess friend who's lost her senses and then forgetting she got the mail already. Lapsing into George Bush, Sr.'s "thousand points of light" speech.
Blanche: Delirious from writing, thinks egg yokes are little balls of sunshine in a bag, then goes off on Rose for criticizing her writing. "People from Minnesota are considered well-read if they finish the Sears Catalog!" Dealing with Rebecca deciding to be inseminated--"And this is what I get for all those nights, when you were a baby crying, and I'd walk all the way downstairs and scream for the governess?!" "Oh, shut up! Just shut up! You babbling, bubble-headed, bleach-blonde, b-, b-, b-" / "Baboon." / "BABOON!"
Rose: Rose telling the story of how a cow took her house because her husband left it to her in the will as a joke. It just keeps going and going. 2nd is "Hypersexual bitch." Then Rose asking Sophia (pretending to be possessed by Charlie's spirit) to prove it's him--"Don't take any wooden nickels." / "My god, it is you!" Rose asking Kiersten to lean in closer--"Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Rose begins recounting her life from the beginning and it's some weird farm animal race. Also interviewing dog pageant owners during a hold-up.

But the series is full of sad moments that are done well, too. The lima beans scene when Blanche's father dies and the end of the episode Sophia's son Phil dies never fail to get the tears out of me. I really regret not taping The Golden Palace when it ran once on Lifetime years ago, because it's never been played again or released on DVD. I'd like to have it even if it's inferior to TGG. Most of the episodes are on YouTube at least.

Oh yes, one of my favorite sitcoms of the eighties! Always fun with some serious touches here and there. With the ever recurring stories from Sophia about her life in Sicily and Rose about St Olaf! And the ongoing battle between Dorothy and that nincompoop of her ex-husband (Ed? Not sure any more of his name). She almost made the mistake of remarrying him, but in the end found her happiness with an uncle of Blanche.

For a while I could watch episodes of the series on Youtube on a special canal, but that was taken down due to copyright infringement. It would be ideal if some of these older series from the 80's would be offered on Netflix. Sure you can buy them on dvd, but in the long run you have no storage place left.

Anyone here who used to watch the spin-off (well sort of) 'Empty Nest'?

I've never liked what little I've seen of it, but I only found out recently that Sophia/Estelle Getty was a regular in its last two seasons. I wish I'd known that when it aired on Hallmark a year or two ago, so I could tape the episodes she was in.
