used to love the pirates movies. But I can't stand the character of Jack Sparrow and I am over my obsession with Orlando Bloom's character (and hated his fate in POTC:AWE), so I am skipping this film.

I also was annoyed when I rode the POTC ride last may (may 2009) and they had to put Jack in nearly every scene.........it ruined the ride for me. I preferred the pre-Jack sparrow ride I went on in 1996.

they won't get $8 or $9 from me.

I CANNOT wait for this simply because I can't wait to see how they incorporate mermaids into the plot. I'm also looking forward to seeing their designs, and whether there will be an underwater scenes with them!

Of course there is that, but also, more Jack! But I think on the whole, I'm more nervous than excited for this movie, because it's pretty much confirmed that Penelope Cruz's character will be a love interest for Jack, which completely goes against his character. And Keith Richards returning also worries me; it would be better if Jack's past remained a mystery. But as I said before, we're getting more Pirates, so I can't complain!

AHHH! I know this is just a rumor, but I really hope this is true! I don't care if they are overkill, more Pirates is always a good thing!

Actually, I really hope this isn't true. I'm already nervous about what the fourth is going to be like, let alone the next two.

Well, maybe I shouldn't speak too soon. I doubt that they will be able to match up with the first 3. They might be okay if they make another trilogy with the 4, 5 and 6, with the fourth opening the door to a plot that carries through the next two. I'm not sure how I feel about them being two stand-alone films.

I don't mind if they do a 5 & 6. I just hope they learned their lesson from 2 & 3 and actually have a solid story and finished script before they start principal photography.

I would have to agree. But I really hope to god that Penelope Cruz's character won't be in the next two, because I still can't get by Jack having a love interest. It takes away his essence!

So was the ending to the third movie ever officially explained by somebody at Disney? It was a bit confusing. I loved the first movie, but wasn't much a fan of the two sequels. I'll probably at least rent these new ones.

<i>Dead Man's Chest</i> is far and away my favorite, personally...hard to say why, exactly. It had that <i>Empire Strikes Back</i> middle-movie thing going for it, setting lots of things in motion without having to tie anything up. And Davy Jones is simply my favorite fantastic character to come along in a long, long time: the digital character creation is truly impressive, but Bill Nighy's performance is simply brilliant. We get a taste of him unerneath all those layers in some of the supplemental material, but I'd be happy to get a chance to watch the entire film with Nighy in those grey pajamas just to see *him* work. Shame Jones is dead; I'd love to see more of him...

I also remember talking to several other people about it at the time and they weren't sure as well. When Will is shown returning at the end, does that mean he is back for good and can go back to a normal life again or does he have to go back?

He's back for good. Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Russo explained this on their website after they got a lot of e-mails about it. Whoever becomes captain of the Flying Dutchman must harbor souls to the world's end for 10 years. If his love has been faithful to him during that time, he has the right to resign and live back on land.

This is why Davy Jones was so ticked off at Calypso. He had entrusted his heart to her (literally), but she was unfaithful while he was away at sea for a decade. Her flightiness resulted in him having to captain the Dutchman for eternity (or until his physical heart was destroyed and replaced with that of another). That's when Jones decided to use his immortality to conquer the seven seas rather than guide souls safely. Because he neglected his duties, he and the rest of the crew were cursed to look the way they do.

So we can assume by the final scene that since Elizabeth is there waiting for Will, she's been true to him and therefore, the 10 years of service are up. The writers said there was a deleted scene that explained this more clearly. Now who became the captain after Will resigned is anyone's guess, but I'd like to think it's Bootstrap Bill.

With the third movie as long as it was, they couldn't find time for that little tidbit, but they allowed the maelstrom battle to go on as long as it did? Sheesh!

Interestingly enough, the DVD insert includes a question related to this (part of their "Pirates Secrets Revealed"), which answered that he'd be on the Dutchman forever (but what does WDSHE know?). Of course, the fact that they actually have a section of the DVD insert devoted to answering questions that moviegoers had shows just how shoddy the script was when it came to expository elements that should have been understood or explained without distracting from the general storyline in the movie.
