I mean if people see a really really long hair blonde girl on the cover, they'll going to know it's Rapunzel regardless.
A lot of the Mattel merchandise now reads "Tangled" instead of "Featuring... Rapunzel." Darn. :|

I think you underestimate the dumbness of the general public.

According to Event Cinemas and Hoyts Cinemas Tangled opens in New Zealand on 6 January, so unless it's changed, we won't have to wait too much longer. But it still feels too far away. I guess they delay it to make sure all the kids (not goats :P ) are out of school.

I'm not sure if you mean percentage of worldwide gross or the amount a studio gets from the actual cinemas, but if it's the former, movies like Brother Bear, Princess and the Frog, Bolt, Prince of Persia, et cetera had international grosses significantly higher than the North American Box Office. Hopefully Tangled has the same trend.

I'd agree that Disney shouldn't be focusing on PRINCESS stories. Perhaps they should just be focusing on telling GOOD stories.
Well said, although the impression I have is they aren't just talking about actual "princess movies" so much as animated musicals, which in the minds of some I guess gets lumped into the category of a "princess" flick. It's kind or a dumb mentality when you think of all the animated musicals that have no princesses in them!

But, I think what it is really about is this modern, cold, corporate mentality that Disney now holds that instead of making good stories, you make what will sell toys and t-shirts, what the focus groups say. Boys like Spider-Man, so Disney bought Marvel. Boys like cars and bought the Hot-Wheels-like car toys with Lightning McQueen and Mater, so even though "Cars" was the lightest Pixar film at the box office in a while, it gets the first non-"Toy Story" sequel.

Could you imagine how different classic Disney Animation would look if Walt gave a dang about focus groups? Now there is a creepy thought.

So, now that "Tangled" is doing really well at the box office, especially in a year when just about every other Disney film has tanked (save for "Alice" and "Toy Story 3"), Disney would be dumb to stick to their original thoughts on the situation and I think this will have an impact on their thinking. My only sad regret in this is that it wasn't "Princess and the Frog" becuase now while "princess" films may still be safe, expect them all to be in CG from now on. :(
