"Princess Movies" not as dead as Disney thought?
Guess who beat out "Harry Potter" at the box office this weekend? And who is close to crossing $100 million with a very strong chance of making a ton more then that? Disney recently made it know that they had no more "princess movies" in the pipe line and that the musical fairy tale was dead to them, at least for now. Maybe it's not as "dead" as they thought? Here is crossing fingers for "Snow Queen!"

That's just what I'm believing! How in the name of fudge does Disney expect this to recoup its budget?!Pumba wrote:The sad part is, even with this successful box office run, I see it finishing below $200M Domestic. That will be well short of its reported $260million budget (seriously, that is ridiculous!).
It's best to give it a few more weeks (while it's still December and all). It's already earning more money at its rate than The Princess and the Frog did. I assume at the very least it will surpass TPATF's earnings.
In either case, Disney is only making a big deal because they worry about their biggest franchises not making the money they're expecting.
If Tangled breaks $200 million I expect they'll be changing their minds about a lot of things.

I really hope that they continue with The Snow Queen, because that looks like it could be made into a really good Disney movie. Just as long as it doesn't remind people so much of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that they might think it's a rip-off.
Also, I really think they should loosen up on their current "no girly-themed movies" rule. I happened to love princess movies as a little boy, so, there!

Menken reportedly said if Tangled's a smash Snow Queen will start production, and they're indeed thinking of making it CGI nowrs_milo_whatever wrote:I just hope they don't go "Hmm they loved Tangled; must have been because it was CGI... yeah, I'm sure of it, audiences today are so stupid they can only ever love a CGI movie. LOL]Pumba wrote:I don't think studios get that much of a % from International gross. But yeah, it'll still be a success no doubt. I think the profits from merchandise and DVD/Blu-ray sales will be pretty big.

I'm pretty sure Disney will sell billions of Rapunzel dolls. Isn't that what this film was designed to do.... and the reason they were willing to invest all that time and money into it?
Think about it. A doll. With super long hair...
Ka-ching.
Why was Eisner desperate to get Cars in on the renewal of the Pixar deal? He KNEW (because he wasn't a complete idiot) that Cars would be a merchandise monster. Rapunzel is the same story.

I hope old school animation isn't declared dead yet!
Funny, in The Netherlands the original English version of 'Tangled' is simply called 'Rapunzel', as it should have been called in the USA release.
By the way, I don't see how "The Snow Queen" can be categorized as a princess story. It's not about a princess or a girl who become one.
I tnink that te succes of 'Rapunzel'proves that adaptations of traditional faiyr tales is sitll a golden formula, adn that audinece won't grow tired of it.

For some reason I don't think this would be a bed decision. As much as I love traditional animation, I can only imagine how beautifyl snow crystals or a snow palace would look in CGI.LucilleBallFilms wrote:Menken reportedly said if Tangled's a smash Snow Queen will start production, and they're indeed thinking of making it CGI now(atleast I think he did
) Darn Disney needs to make it traditional or i'll have to go up there and womp some people with my frying pan

Nowadays, I think many people simply get mixed up with the term "fairy tale" and "princess story".
The original Snow Queen is basically about a girl searching for her best friend, and about her interactions with the characters she meets along the way. It's basically a fairy tale adventure concerning incidental children, more along the lines of something like Pinocchio or The Wizard of Oz than Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella. In fairness, the young girl does meet a princess and her prince on her quest (a crow thinks that the new prince is the lost friend), but a lot of adaptations I know excise this segment for whatever reason. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd make the prince and princess the heartbeat of the story just for the sake of producing profitable merchandise.
As for the topic at hand, let me reiterate for the umpteenth time that LA Times article manipulated some truths a bit to get a juicy article. And I think that Tangled will be a profitable film. At the rate it's going, it should at least surpass Bolt and Enchanted in terms of US box office, and the film has opened hardly anywhere abroad. I think that the 260 million tag does include international marketing, and it'd push a good few million on DVD and Blu-Ray. Plus, as Patrick mentioned, the title character would be the ideal doll for any young girl. I don't think anybody is expecting it to do as well as Toy Story 3, but it's looking to be a film with a decent longevity as far as profits are concerned, and more than just a throwaway success like how Chicken Little was.

The Snow Queen sounds like it has a lot of potential to be an epic tale, but I hope that if they do decide to proceed with production one day, whether hand-drawn or CGI, they don't turn it into some kind of buddy comedy or something. From what I understand, the original story has a very distinct tone, and I hope that they can keep that intact when adapting it to a film.Wonderlicious wrote:The original Snow Queen is basically about a girl searching for her best friend, and about her interactions with the characters she meets along the way.
