The 2½ hour documentary and 1977 featurette sound quite exciting. Sweet!

Don't look now, but here is another "minor" tweak to The Empire Strikes Back

The top frame is the "new" and "improved" version with Ian McDiarmid posing as the Emperor. The bottom frame is the one that we're all used to seeing:

No. Which means, of course, that there will be AT LEAST three different versions of the film, and maybe a fourth when HD-DVD comes to market.

TheForce.net is saying that they think that's a fan made picture. It's not too bad really. I would like to see Ian McDiarmid put in that scene instead of the person/effect that is there.

Perhaps, if it is legit, he is so young because that would be the age when the good man who was Anakin Skywalker died and Darth Vader was born? If that's not legit, it is a pretty well done fake.

If you try and apply logic to the bizarre damage Lucas is inflicting on the Original Trilogy, you'll go as mad as he apparently is.

Georgie Porgie does these things for two reasons only: because he's insane and because he can.

The DVD is going to be a special edition director cut as many of you probably know, there is a trailer up for it now and it looks really good. It looks like most o fthe changes are just updating effects and backgrounds, but they look really good. I am really looking forward to seeing this new version.

Wow, if I hadn't known that a) this was a trailer for THX 1138 and b) who Robert Duvall was, I would've thought this was a new film. The transfer looks amazing. I hope the Star Wars trilogy looks this good on DVD.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Kelvin. I had a teacher once who RAVED about this film and how it was "robbed" of its due attention. I guess I'll have to see it.

Being a fairly big fan of Star Wars, and Lucas' early work, I can't wait to see THX 1138. It's sounds really artistic and creative, before George could do whatever he wanted. The trailer looks awesome! Ironically, talked about at HTF, THX may not have THX certification.

Its a fairly slow/depressing fim, which is why is wasn't a box office hit. It is a very interesting film however, which is why its become a bit of a cult hit. I really enjoyed the Special Edition trailer, most of the changes look fairly subtle and I think they will really enhance the film. Like someone else has already mentioned, it doesn't even look like a 33 year old film. In fact, the trailer makes the film look even more creative than it originally was, despite the fact that he can now do whatever he wants.

I dont know why George can't release the old version and the director's cut in a 2 disc set like 20th Century Fox did with Alien movies!

Well, he keeps saying that he won't, but I think it is possible one day.

They way he looks at it, the Special Editions are the same movies. The movies have been getting changed ever since they were first assembled, like many films get changed. When the first one was shot, it is said that it was almost shot documentary style, showing exactly where each character was at any given moment, etc. The special effects were vastly different and there were many different scenes. This is known as the Lost Cut of Star Wars.

Over the course of a year, many of the effects were redone, the cantina scene was changed quite a bit adding cooler aliens, a band and music, and the removal of Han Solo's gal pal, Jenny.

Then it was finally released to theaters on May 25, 1977. There were several different versions of the soundtrack, a Dolby Surround, mono, etc. So right from the beginning, there were different versions of the soundtrack.

The film got re-released to promote the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, and for the re-release it got the subtitle of 'A New Hope.' So, I think the way George is looking at the others as just earlier works in progress. It might be right or wrong, but that's how he's seeing it.

Of course the Special Editions were released in 1997, which restored some footage that was deleted and some of the effects were redone. I was excited to see the scene with Biggs and Luke at the Rebel Base right before the attack on the Death Star. It was cool to see the Jabba the hutt scene too, even tho most people would like a better effect. At the time, we were all pretty amazed, but I think the Episode 1 version of Jabba will look better in that scene.

So, most of the updates were okay, the only one I disagree with is the Greedo shooting first thing, since it was changing an event rather than just updating an effect. The CG Dewback lizards were a nice addition, but the best change was the spaceship effects. The Millenium Falcom blasting out of Mos Eisley was a great enhancement. The X-Wings taking off from the Rebel Base and in the dog fights above the Death Star were much better too.

Now I am all for honoring the work of the original effects artists and would really like to have an officially released copy of the original theatrical editions on DVD, but honestly I think most people would end up just watching the newer versions anyway. I think that when they have the bigger capacity DVDs, we may finally get some of the earlier versions of the films, until then there's your VHS, LD and bootleg DVDs.
