My Platinum List

Well here it is at last my Platinum list:

1. Snow White - for the simple fact that it started them all, and is a landmark in film history.<
2. Bambi - because it's Bambi, a classic through and through
3. Pinnochio - a true Masterpiece (love it or hate it)
4. Alice in Wonderland - another milestone in animation, and one of Disney's most (contriversial?) films
5. Sleeping Beauty - beautiful through and through whether you're talking about music, story or animation
6. Jungle Book or 101 Dalmations - each use the xerox method, a definate staple in disney history, while 101 D is the first to use the method JB is the last film Disney worked on... I tend to lean more towards JB
7. The Little Mermaid - the beginning of disney's new rennaissance
8. Beauty and the Beast - possibly disney at it's best, for the post SB era
9. Aladdin - a personal favorite and a continuation of disney's 2nd golden era
10. The Lion King - Bambi for a whole other generation (hope that doesn't offend anyone)

This is my complete unbias list. Those of you who are familiar with my view points know that Pinnochio as well as a few others are not my faves but never the less, my list was based on the pinacles of disney animation, be it through new techniques, staples of the company, or just great stories.

(All of the movies listed may not be my faves, but they are all good )

My runner ups are:
1. Lady and the Tramp - A personal favorite
2. Cinderella - great classic, but it was either this or Snow White
3. Dumbo- one of the original 5 (still have yet to see)
4. Well, if it were a matter of me adding 4, I would let the public vote for the last one, or just do the #6 that didn't get picked

I chose not to do ones after Lion King, because they seemed to recent but I think all, with a few exceptions are definite platinum worthy. (Please note, I would release all classics as 2 disc sets, these are just the movies worthy of the Platinum title, meaning disney's best)

For two reasons.

1) it's one of my all-time favs, and
2) The version just released is not that good. It needs and deserves the Platinum treatment

I know, I know-not adding Snow White to the list is like sacreligious here, but I've never really enjoyed the film that much. Snow White was too childlike and weird, the Prince was a wimp (all he had to do was sing a song and kiss a bird, and SW fell madly in love with him) and Dopey always made me frustrated (couldn't he do anything right?). I know it was a milestone, and I respect that: it is Platinum worthy, but Walt always wanted it to be about entertaining people, and not making money. Snow White just doesn't entertain me as well as these 14 others. Now, if it were up to me, I would scrap the current Platinum line, and re-release all the full-length animated films in 2-disc sets as part of the "Definitive Collection" or the "Classics Collection". But there would be 2-4 released a year, so we wouldn't have to wait too long for Little Mermaid or Aladdin.

But now I have to add the other package features, so Disney should just do what I suggested earlier and re-release them all as the "Definitive Collection". Who cares if it costs money-they can just make a few more DTV sequels to make up for it.

Prince Adam, you said Sleeping Beauty twice in your initial post, don't know if this was intentional of not. Also I agree with you about Snow White, pretty much all the points you made, but especially Dopey, I hate him! And yet he seems to be one of the company's staple characters . Really if you think about it, Snow White is unneeded as it is pretty much a combination of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, however, it is historically signifigant .

Yeah, I originally had Mulan as #4 and Sleeping Beauty as #7. I went to switch the two (I like SB better) and I guess I just messed up and forgot.
And I'm glad you agree with me on Snow White. Dopey is a bit of a waste of time (he's just so...so...DOPEY!!!!!), Snow White is childish, and seems like a little girl playing mom to the dwarfs. And don't get me started on the Prince...I can't stand him. He has no involvement in the plot whatsoever, and then all of a sudden he reappears and saves the day. I think Disney should have stuck with the original idea that the Witch kidnapped him, and he just about died. Then, when he escaped he went directly to Snow White.

I completely agree with that! Disney definitely needs a "Definitive Collection" (classics seems a little out of place for "Robin Hood"), which bases on Aladdin's PE as the perfect starting point. Include EVERYTHING known to exist about that particular film; "Empty the Vaults" so to speak. Of course, I think this would be particularily exciting on Blu-Ray (especially since it has all the space necessary), in full 1080p, and without any alternations (or just make sure to include the original cut).

I think there should be 3 per year: 1 of Walt's Classics (Snow White to Jungle Book), 1 for the unknown 80's (Aristocats to Oliver & Co.), and 1 from the Last Age of 2D Disney (from TLM to HOTR), and of course that could expand to Disney of the 21st 3D realm (Chicken Little, and so on...).

Now, who thinks I should be running Buena Vista Home Entertainment?! How is it that so many "Everyday Joes" can think of a better plan of releases than the CEOs?
