Halloween (1978)
Something Wicked This Way Comes - I haven't seen it since I was a kid, sometime in the mid 80s. It was creepy then, and it's still creepy now. This is probably the creepiest Disney movie there is. I'm hoping this collaboration with Guillermo del Toro produces some movies just like this one. The best way to describe this one is Fantasy Island crossed with The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.
Halloween (1978) - It's Halloween, so how come there are green leaves on all the trees? With this small observation aside, this is the first time I've seen this one. Yeah I know, but better late than never. There's hardly any gore; it's quite simplistic but effective. I don't know if John Carpenter was inspired by Psycho, but here and there you can see some similarities. Good stuff. i've got the remake which I haven't watched yet, but I'm sure Rob Zombie added a bunch more gore to it.

In case anyone is running out of ideas of movies to watch for Halloween, I just updated my post on page 1.
I try to avoid most things Disney during the Halloween season, so you will find some very classic horror films on the list including the original "House of Wax" (1953) with Vincent Price, which was originally filmed in 3-D.
Had a John Carpenter day at the movies last weekend, there are some pretty good films on that list.
Check it out!!

Halloween (2007) (Unrated Director's Cut)
Halloween (2007) (Unrated Director's Cut)- Definitely not great, but also not terrible. The original is still a classic. This one feels like a profanity-laden, white-trash HBO movie or TV show with all the shaky cam. First hour shows young Michael Myers becoming a psychopathic killer, played by that kid Will Smith threw into the sky in Hancock. The 2nd hour is pretty much the original story with a few changes here and there. More blood, more gore (although I thought it would be more graphic), and more boobs (including full frontal nudity
)
. Alright performance by Malcolm McDowell (replacing Donald Pleasence). Also with smaller parts for Brad Dourif, Danny Trejo, and Ron Howard's brother Clint. Like I said not great, but also not terrible. I think the only thing that was dislikable was all the white-trash content in the first hour. It would be interesting if Rob Zombie re-made Halloween III: Season of the Witch
.

The Wolf Man (1941)
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
Creepshow 2 - Having only seen the first one, this is the first time I've seen this sequel. The first Creepshow has five stories, this one only has three, but they are pretty good. The first story is about a wooden cigar store Indian chief sculpture that comes to life and seeks revenge. The second story features a floating blob that consumes victims in a lake. The third story is about a hitchhiker that can't seem to take a hint, featuring Lois Chiles (Moonraker's Dr. Goodhead), and Stephen King returns in a bit part. Even though there was a third Creepshow that follows the same anthology structure, it was not made by George A Romero and Stephen King. I wish they could get back together and revive this franchise.
"Thanks for the ride, lady!"

The Wolf Man (1941) - The Lon Chaney original. A Universal Studios classic. Although, I must say there are things that I like about the this year's remake. Here's some of my preferences:
Lawrence Talbot - Benicio was good, although I think I do prefer Lon - Lon was more sympathetic.
The Wolf Man - For this one I have to go with Benicio - he has the face for it.
Sir John Talbot - Claude Raines (Invisible Man) vs. Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter). I have to go with Anthony Hopkins for this one.
Time setting - Victorian Times (2010) vs. 1940s (1941). I prefer the Victorian time setting in this year's remake.
The first werewolf - Bela (Bela Lugosi - 1941) vs. Sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins - 2010). Either way for this one. This was the major change in the remake.
For the time the make-up was pretty cool. And I do like how Rick Baker captured the feel of the original look in the remake. Great classic that needs to be seen in one's lifetime.

Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943) - The direct sequel to The Wolf Man. Lawrence Talbot is back from the dead and seeks the help of Frankenstein's monster and Frankenstein's daughter to rid the werewolf curse thru permanent death. Lon Chaney returns as the Wolf Man, Bela Lugosi takes on the role of Frankenstein's monster. Pretty good sequel, although it would've been better if they could've gotten Boris Karloff back to play Frankenstein's monster. Karloff seemed to be more sinister in this role than Lugosi.

Check out my updates on Page 1 of this thread (I am up to 75 flms watched) and also notice that there is no television shows on this list. The "100 Horror Films in 31 Days" viewing challenge on another thread does not allow television shows or made for television movies. So I can't wimp out like some of you. Also have taken advantage of watching some of my old classic films that I have always enjoyed.
There are not too many modern day horror films that can rate as 'classic horror' films. There are a couple - "Saw" the first one of the series was the only one worth owning, the others are just cheap imitations and are a waste of time.
And most of the remakes in the past years have been duds. Check out my listing on page one and see if there are some films there you haven't seen, and maybe this last week of October you can truly have a fright fest at home.

Since went to University I've had less and less time for TV. So this year I started in September and have watched these so far... (more listings and some small reviews of the programs watched coming soon.)
Movies
Clue - Always a fun film with a great cast. It may not be the most laugh out loud picture but it is just a terribly addictive one with lots of charm.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (x3 as a film plus a in concert style play) - Last month I was a TRHPS virgin. Like many films I knew a lot about the film and knew the two songs played by everyone all the time. In September I went to a theater in Ottawa I had a lot of fun so much so that I later went to my school's theater departments showing of the movie and then it was on TV. Yes, I now have the film and Glee soundtracks as well.
Scream 3 - I can't wait for the forth film but I am worried with the new 'torture porn' kind of rules.
Scream 2
Shock Treatment - Many a good song is in this but It's not as good as TRHPS. I find parts of the plot a tad more confusing and while there are great songs like Bitchin' in the Kitchen and Little Black Dress there are just bad bad bad ones like In My Own Way and Thank God I'm a Man as well. I'd like the soundtrack for it though.
Mad Monster Party - This was my first time watching this and it was absolutely charming. True with the feature length there are some pacing problems in it but like most Rankin-Bass Classics there are lots of fun songs and humor (macabre as it may be in this presentation).
Gremlins - Yes, a Christmas movie but it was on sale and a friend had not seen it before. She said she despite it while everybody else who had seen it could not imagine why. I still am surprised about Disney allowing that Snow White footage in it however.
Tower of Terror - Was only half watching it but it's a nice little bit of 90's cheese and it helps that Melora Hardin of The Office is in it.
The Ghost & Mr. Chicken
TV Shows/Specials
South Park: Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror (The Raven segment only)
Halloween is Grinch Night
Underfist: Halloween Bash: This is something I have wanted to see for a very long time. A spin-off of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy after that show ended, this special places the secondary charters of Billy & Mandy in the spotlight saving Halloween from evil candy bars and a marshmallow bunny. While pleasant this special needed more comedy and less...noise. I also find the charter of Irwin to be ill-suited as a lead for such a long period. I'd have liked less of him and more of Mr. Skarr instead, but that's simply my preference.

I got "Tabitha" on DVD for my birthday last month and have only watched the first couple of episodes so far; for a "Bewitched" spin-off, it's a very charming show. The "Halloween" episode does come with quite a glowing reputation from a few of our UD-ers, and I've purposefully left off watching it until Halloween. Looking forward to seeing it.UmbrellaFish wrote:I heard earlier about this being a very good Halloween episode, but I have to ask, why and in what way? I love the classic Bewitched, but I've never seen an episode of "Tabitha" so I'm definitely curious.Cordy_Biddle wrote:Tabitha The Halloween Show

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein - After seeing Dracula in theaters back in '92 I had to see this one. I remember first learning about this one when I saw the poster outside of Grauman's Theater in Hollywood. Great movie. One of Kenneth Branagh's best. Cool effects and some pretty gross makeup - especially when Frankenstein revives Elizabeth's grafted head on Justine''s body - to become the "bride". Not your typical role for John Cleese - hard to tell it's him the way they made him look. Robert De Niro as the monster was an interesting casting choice. One letdown though, this movie is currently not available in widescreen, or a collector's edition like BS's Dracula.
Death Eater!

Bram Stocker's Dracula - Another great movie. Bloody. Erotic. Creepy. Cool costumes, especially Dracula's transformations (werewolf, bat, etc). With Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Cary Elwes, Tom Waits, Bill Campbell (yes, Rocketeer) and as a bonus, a topless Monica Bellucci.
I always make the mistake of considering these two movies as Universal Studios Monster movies, but unfortunately they aren't. They were both released by Columbia Tristar. I wonder if Universal has plans to remake their originals since they just re-did Wolfman, and before it, The Mummy.

The Goonies
The Goonies - Ok, it doesn't quite have horror or Halloween written all over it, but it is a great movie to watch in October. Why? And why particularly on October 26? Because over at the TheGoonies.org message board, some of my fellow Goonies have concluded that The Goonies set out on their adventure on October 26. Let's see, what could tie it to Halloween? Well, it's got skeleton pirates, a couple corpses, bats, and creepy caves. I've loved this movie ever since I was 6 when I saw it at the theater back in 1985. There's just something magical about this one. The story is great. The down-to-earth feel is great. The score by David Grusin is great. No CGI is great.
An excellent family film. Goonies never say die!
