A SPOILER-FREE SUMMARY (sorry, this was as short as I could manage! Don't quote it all & clutter the board any more than my fool self is right now, please!)

After being fortunate enough to see Tangled the other day, I have to admit to feeling a little shell-shocked afterwards—and a touch depressed, too. No no, not because the movie wasn’t good—because it was so great, and I’d been waiting and wanting to see it for so long, that getting to see it so suddenly…I think maybe I wasn’t ready for it. There was this weight on my chest, a feeling of ‘what will I look forward to now?’ And I’ll tell you: I’m already looking forward to seeing this lovely film again and again and again.

The whole thing was very new to me, and I will tell you upfront that I am neither experienced with reviewing movies, nor do I recall every little thing I saw—this movie needs to be seen more than once, because there’s that much happening, and it’s just that good. I’ll put your concerns about the CGI to bed now, first thing: everything looks beautiful, especially Rapunzel’s hair. There truly was no way 2D could have accomplished the look and feel of her famous locks—but, at the risk of sounding flip, haters gonna hate. I understand if 2D is what’s nearest & dearest to your heart: I prefer it too. But this movie looks damn good, and if you don’t agree after seeing it for yourself, then I’m scared to know what it takes to impress you!

Rapunzel and Flynn are wonderfully crafted fictional people, with very human moments that draw you in. Rapunzel has issues with anxiety and doubt, planted in her from a young age by the manipulative and hiss-worthy Gothel. Flynn is a man out for himself with a difficult past driving him to reach for a brighter future—bright as in gold and jewels, that is. Together they grow and change, and I loved watching every second. Pascal, while not necessarily pivotal to the plot, makes an adorable companion who encourages Rapunzel on every step of her journey. You could get into the symbolism behind animal friends in fairytales, and maybe later I’ll discuss it in another write-up, but not here. Maximus is hilarious and intense, and the antagonistic relationship he has with Flynn had everyone laughing—and his puppy like love of Rapunzel is too cute.

Of course everyone wants to know about the music, and in my opinion Menken delivered. Whether or not you mind the lyrics is up to you, because a) I can’t recall enough of them to tell you what they were, and b) personally, the lyrics are pretty low on the list of important aspects of a song to me. If a song makes me feel happy, or sad, or laugh, if it just gets me involved in the moment, I consider it a success. ‘Mother Knows Best’ and ‘I See the Light’ were definitely my favorites; I agree with a previous review saying ‘Mother’ sounds like ‘Master of the House,’ but only in this way: take the part from the Les Mis song where they say “Master of the House” and replace it with “Mother knows best!” (and, in a later sarcastic reprise, “Rapunzel knows best! Rapunzel’s so mature now!”) The pub song is silly and cute, pure fun, and had a line something like “Even though I’m an ugly blighter/I’m a lover, not a fighter! Even though my face makes people scream/I’ve got a dream.” I can NOT promise those are the exact lyrics, but they’re as close as I’m able to remember. The Healing Incantation has the same words whether Rapunzel or Gothel sings it, but it has a more sinister sound from Gothel. ‘I See the Light’ is romantic and lovely, and reminded me of previous Disney songs like ‘Something There’ (BATB) in that some portions are voice-over, and then the two sing together real-time as they hold hands surrounded by floating lights. This whole scene was breathtaking, by the way.

This movie has many, many funny moments—but it is not-At- ALL “Shrek-like,” so please, for the sake of my sanity, stop comparing the two! They are nothing alike, and for what it’s worth, I love the first two Shrek films. As for the PG rating, I’d say the majority of scenes that might have contributed to the rating are near the end of the film. There are zero fart jokes or anything along those lines; this movie has a pure and not-at-all cynical sense of humor.

I have about half of a veryyyy long, spoiler-laden, detailed summary of the entire film written, and plan to write another document with some more in-depth analysis of issues that people have mentioned, like Gothel and Rapunzel’s relationship, but for now I’ll leave you with this: this is a beautiful, worthy and heart-warming film. If you come at it with an open mind, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks very much for reading.

Thanks for the review, phan258. I was already looking forward to seeing the movie, and now even more so!

I think your advice about keeping an open mind is good. Have you ever noticed that kids always have a much better time at the movies than film critics? It's true. I for one am going to just enjoy the movie. Then if I notice its flaws or certain parts that seem to drag when rewatching it (as was the case for me with PatF) so be it.

Even some of the most venerable Disney movies have their share of plot holes, cheesy dialogue, rushed moments etc., such as the Sultan spontaneously deciding that since he's the Sultan he can change the law so that Jasmine can marry whomever she wishes. Why didn't he figure that out earlier when he saw how miserable she was? Yet, I continue to watch and enjoy Aladdin as much as I did the first time I saw it. I simply choose not to obsess over such things.

It's much like the (fabricated) Abraham Lincoln quote in Pollyana, "If you look for the bad in [something] you will surely find it."

Thankyou so much Phan! Do you think Disney has a hit on their hands?

I am rather quickly starting to feel Tangled is indeed a better title than Rapunzel after all, for the reasons cited by the directors. It seems like a whole heap of characters getting Tangled up in the story that is Rapunzel (whereas in the original fairytale, it was just a prince, rapunzel and the mother). It's like how Aurora is almost a background prop character* in Sleeping Beauty, and how it focus more on the fairies and prince philip.

*nevertheless Aurora is still my favourite disney character!

Thank you very much for the summary phan258! You had me worried there for a moment when you said you left depressed, but after reading your reasoning, I can completely understand why. I get like that too after looking forward to something for a long time. :) Anyways, really really great summary, November 24th just can't seem to come fast enough! :D

Hey no problem guys, I'm happy to give back however I can! I'm sorry to leave the people who want spoilers in suspense--I'm working on it!

As to whether this movie will be a hit, if the reactions of the children (and parents!) in the audience I was with is any indication, I'd say yes!

ALSO, LYRICS: You guys have no idea how much I wish I could be more definitive about them. I honestly tried to pay extremely close attention to them, but as I said....they're just not as important to me. I'm the kind of person who hears a song come on the radio that they've heard a billion times, and STILL can't sing along without messing up. I forgot to add a few in my original post:

Mother Knows Best: In one of the later reprises, Gothel says a line something like "Don't be a dummy, stay with/come with Mummy..."

I See the Light: I can't be sure, but my notes say that one of Rapunzel's lines went like this: "And now I see the light/and it's like a veil's been lifted/yes now I see the light..."
Flynn has a line something like: "...when I see her I know it's where I'm meant to go..."

EDIT: I don't know if any of you guys also check the IMDB board, but I post there too, under phantom-00. I have a thread over there where I've been answering questions, so people who WANT spoilers, you can check there to see if anything you've been wanting to know has already been answered while I finish my spoiler-y summary.

EDIT 2: Duuhhh, completely forgot to mention the KINGDOM DANCE sequence! This song is score only, but I really really liked it: basically it's a line-dance type....ugh, I wish I was more knowledgeable on these subjects! Any of you seen the new Pride & Prejudice movie? That dance where you change partners as you go? Rapunzel starts dancing in the middle of a square, and pulls others into it--Maximus hip-checks a reluctant Flynn into the dance as well, hahaha! Rapunzel & Flynn keep trying to dance together, but keep getting pulled away by different partners. Interspersed with the dancing is a montage of scenes of them walking around and exploring/enjoying the kingdom. I recall there being a dress shop mentioned, but I don't remember seeing one and Rapunzel does NOT change outfits. At the end of the song, they finally meet, chest-to-chest, panting and smiling. Really wonderful moment!!

Um, Disneydude2010, your spoilers don't work... And you're kind of spoiling the end now ;)

I have a question, phan258,
SPOILER ALERTDoes Rapunzel's hair stay short and brown after it's cut? I really want to know this... if so, that's kind of a pity. Because she looks so cute and funny with the long golden hair, it makes her really girly.. and short brown will make her look so serious.

Thanks!

LOL i just saw the Maximus video. Funniest Meet..-video yet!!!
Especially the end, when he like raises his eyebrows at Flynn. I'm guessing that's the dancing scene and that Flynn's watching Rapunzel and gets all in-love, and that Maximus is like: I know you like her, and Flynn's like: 'I don't!.... sigh.'

Okay that post was embarrassing.
The fangirl inside me took over control...

question for phan...

In the novel Rapunzel tells Flynn her hair glows whenever she sings....so does her hair start glowing at all during "When Will My Life Begin?" and/or "I See The Light" or does it have to be the incantation song that lights her up?

I know chunks of those solos are sung in voice-over but I've heard parts are sung in real time so I was just wondering if it's something we are suppose to not notice or if they explain it has to be the Healing Incantation.

Thanks :-)

I've found the 60 in 10 video along with the sweepstakes one in better quality:

Right for all of the other Brit's (like me) and Europeans if you can't get on DISNEY.COM follow these steps
Type disney international into google --> click the first one ---> then a page comes up with different countries ---> click U.S.A. and there you go :)
A page should come up with the siluates of the disney villians and below is the maximus video

- i hope i have helped :D

Anyways went to see Despicable me today .. I LOVED the story Miranda Cosgrove was partically amazing and her little sister who's obsessed with unicorns is so cute! sadly the human animation lets the film down, sometimes there mouthing of words doesn't flow and there faces just look wrong  Compared to Tangled i genially believe this film is going to be the best CGI film not made by pixar so things look good :P

But for those who havn't checked it Despicable me out go see it, its a very cute story

edit: Maximus high def - french version
