I live in the South. I have never heard anyone call their father Big Daddy. I looked online and it says that the film takes place in the 1920s. The term wasn't coined yet then? I don't know. I don't care. I'm just saying me, personally, felt the term was odd. Mainly because like I said when I first saw the characters I had no idea their relationship.UmbrellaFish wrote:Wikipedia says the name "Big Daddy" comes from Tennessee Williams' 1955 play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, in which the name refers to the very Southern patriarch of the family, and everybody including his wife and daughter-in-laws call him that.tightlacedboots wrote:Big Daddy sounds too much like either a sexual term (who's your daddy?!) or pimp, perhaps a sugar daddy, etc. Either way, doesn't sound proper for a father figure?
As innocent as it was meant to be, it confused the heck out of me! I had to struggle to figure out the ages of the characters and whether or not they were literally related or if the term was simply slang.
edit: I just looked it up on urbandictionary.com. See what I mean.
I think Big Daddy is a perfectly appropriate name for the character. I never thought of it in a sexual way.

What do you mean you had no idea? How can you have gotten no idea? Charlotte' s a little girl who wants a pretty dress, a big man comes her "princess" room and she starts saying "daddy daddy , look at my new dress?" Obviously you know they're father and daughter?!tightlacedboots wrote:I live in the South. I have never heard anyone call their father Big Daddy. As opposed to a young looking wife. I meant when I FIRST saw the characters. As I recall this is the first scene with Charlotte:

As the scene goes on you gradually realize this is her father. Maybe some people knew immediately.

Gosh, tightlacedboots, I never thought that way when I saw it ! It's intersting you thought that though; I did just watch the scene again, and could see how you would maybe think that ... but I just felt that the woman was the little girl Charlotte, just grown up !
It's always interesting to see other people's views and opinions on things
And stitchje1981, thank you for agreeing on my points

That's not the point though. I live in the South, too, and I've never seen anybody sip mint juleps or be called Big Daddy (although I did call my own grandmother mammie...), but it's an archetype of the area.tightlacedboots wrote:I live in the South. But, since you didn't know this, it's understandable that you didn't recognize this in the film.

I haven't given much thought to why Big Daddy is called Big Daddy. I've been thinking of other things such as did the FotOS ditch the dolls when they left the cemetary (because I didn't see the dolls get sucked into the vortex before it vanished) and is Tiana's next goal going to be starting a restaurant chain.

The people who see sexual references everywhere there aren't any (also dust spelling S-E-X in Lion King and erections in Little Mermaid), are most of the times sexually repressed themselves... (And very protective of what they will let their children watch.) I've always found that contradiction fascinating.
And, like stitchje1981 said, the first scene with Charlotte and Big Daddy is at the beginning of the movie, in which Charlotte is a toddler who calls a big man 'daddy'. That should be obvious enough...

I swear, it's only people who already have it on their mind who 'see' things like that. (Although they *were* right on The Rescuers.)UmbrellaFish wrote:I actually had a discussion with somebody about that today. for crying outloud....
I said I know it was innocent but the first time I heard her say it I couldn't tell that was the daughter! She was so grown up I was confused for a second. Stop trying to bash me or make generalizations about people who are merely observing things from a point of view that is not yours. And sexual intent or not, it's sounds ridiculous to me. Personal opinion. Let it go.
Secondly, there most certainly could be an erection in The Little Mermaid. We friggin studied this stuff in my psych class when I was in college and have paused the films in question during these scenes. I didn't have this on my mind, I was told about it and found it years later after the original viewing. Sure, it could be a knee cap. Stupid of the animators to have movement there at all during this scene.
Now, if you have not seen it, then they probably edited the version you are watching. As far as the word SEX in the sky, that is questionable as that could have been SFX which could stand for a company or something else.
Anyway, I mostly brought it up (Big Daddy) as a funny observation.

my original post said there was an erection. I just changed "was" to "could be" as an easy edit.
It must be a knee as it's in the right place for his knee cap and in slow motion it moves as he shifts weight on his leg.
edit: I explained something to pap in a PM so now his post doesn't make sense. That's my fault.

i love that scene from PATF. lottie is hilarious. i always assumed "big daddy" was used cos: he is her dad and she seems the perfect character to call him daddy even as an adult, his body, height and width wise, is big, his standing in society comes across as big and his wallet must be big.
i read that the "SFX" in the lion king stands for special effects.

DisneyAnimation, yes that makes Tiana unique, but in a bad way. And what doesn't make sense is why would she want to be a princess...if she doesn't want to be a princess? In other words, why does she becomes one if she doesn't want to live like one?
Scarred4life, well, it was more like Tiana didn't seem to have any time for fun or dreaming. She was even working at the costume party, wasn't she? And she hardly slept (or was that only one day some days? They don't tell us).
It is much more realistic and keeping you sane/alive to make yourself happy equal to/more than to work doing things you don't like. Though I suppose she at least liked being a waitress because she helped make the food...even though she wasn't the chef, so, nevermind that?
I don't remember her wishing on the star as a little girl. And when he died, why didn't she take both of his advice in? You could say maybe she was so hardened by his death and the real world and living conditions, but wouldn't she want to keep her father's beliefs, all of them, including the star, alive together?
You may be right about the last part, but I figured that Naveen could easily get the money if he asked his parents. More about using money and others' help below...
Atlantica, yes, her dad practically broke his back working for them. For all we know, he truly had to work that hard so they could live comfortably at all, and he suffered for it. Tiana didn't have to work that hard, she didn't need to get the restaraunt to live, and she didn't need to get it that soon.
I don't remember you telling me about how you got in Disney! Tell more, in the themeparks forum or here!
I agree with the rest of what you said, except the others were not waiting in soap suds or wondering around waiting. Okay, maybe Aurora was waiting (though I wonder if she was also kind of looking to see if she'd run into someone, by wondering far enough...) but rather taking time off, having some fun.
PS I hope I don't sound rude or argumentative this time, I am trying to say why Tiana made me feel so...bad about what she was doing, and defending the other characters.
stitchje1981, I agree, but here's the thing:
I am fine with peopel doing the things they want to do. Working on the things they like. I mean, you are supposed to make your work be something you enjoy after all.
But Tiana could have worked on her recipes, and designing her restaraunt, the creative work, while she got help doing the things she didn't like, such as building, from people who like building, and get some funding from Naveen (who's parents I think would help in his new situation).
Like Cinderella did. You see, I see Cinderella as like Walt Disney in the way that she dreamed, and she did work for it (either in wokring to survive or working to go to the ball when her stepmother said she could), but she also had others help her. She picks out the design of the dress she wants, her dream, and then she let the mice and birds build it for her. That's like Walt Disney, dreaming, thinking of how something should look, and having many artists help him make that dream a reality.
I am an artist myself, and I see Cinderella as someone who definately is into the art of fashion. She picked a good dress design! Yea, I would have loved if she drew it, and said how she wanted the ball one to be, but she did make her animals their clothes and intended to make her own...well, that's my rambling.
Oh, and I don't mean Ariel was spoiled, I was aying she could be called that. She had a great life and lots of things. However, what she wanted, she really needed (and she wanted something a lot more important than the human things she collected, she wanted experience and feeling and being part of the right life for her). So, it's all fine, just saying she may have been a little spoiled.
tightlacedboots, I think what really happened is you didn't realize that the blonde girl in the diner was the same little blonde girl you saw in the very beginning of the movie who was his daughter, until later. But most of us did realize it.
I can see the problem you have, but I do not think it is a problem because of historical accuracy and everything can have a meaning not intended. One mom did complain about Toy Story having the character named Woody, because her son would talk about "his Woody" (a doll). And she would be so embarassed...lol
