Ella Enchanted on DVD

Post by buffalobill »

I can't believe it. Miramax is going to take a very delightful film & release it (for a $29.99 retail price) in fool screen only. I was really looking forward to owning it. Unfortunately there is no way I'll buy it. Don't they look at the sales statistics every week. Widescreen outsells fullscreen when both are available almost 100% of the time & every day more people buy WS televisions. Unbelievable.

I just heard about this, and I must say it's made me quite angry. I never saw the film in theaters, but I was highly considering a blind buy, but now that won't happen. Why on earth are they making it full screen only? What's the point? Heck, they probably could've fit both full screen and widescreen onto the same disc, as it doesn't look as if the DVD will have too many special features. Grr, let's hope they change their mind and make widescreen available as well.

Why would they do this? That's insane!
I still plan on buying this DVD even though it is only in full screen. I don't really see why the fact that it will be in full screen only would stop you from buying the DVD, though...
Hopefully the DVD will be changed so that both wide and full screen are available to view. :)

Err, Yuki, the DVD is being released in full screen only, not widescreen only. If it were widescreen only then I wouldn't mind, since that's the version I want.

Um...yeah, I knew that...I typed in 'wide screen' but I truly meant to say 'full screen'...sorry about the typo, I edited it!

I went to the Miramax site, clicked on the video link(which took me to BVHE) and complained.

I had thought this practice behind BVHE, especially considering the great widescreen treatment we've seen for catalogue releases. I guess this pushes us back.

This is the response I got from BVHE:

Everyone can breathe, Ella will be on widescrreen.

Bill - BHVE would like to know where you got the information it will only be in Full Screen?

Thank you for your e-mail regarding ELLA ENCHANTED. We appreciate your interest.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

The press release stated 1.33:1 formatted 4 x 3, but I'm sure it could be a typo. A major typo, still.

That is a big typo! We've killed alot of people to get to this point (widescreen only) we went with a movie advertisement refered to as a "roaring rampage of revenge" WE roared and WE rampaged! and we got WS satisfaction. when they put this out it was sending us all on a bloody rampage. If we would have gotten to our destination we were going to "Kill Eisner". - coming from MMB Pictures - Summer 2004

Bumping this thread up to say that The Digital Bits has posted cover art...and it says fullscreen on it...

Image

But then, if this really was fullscreen only, they wouldn't have put a fullscreen banner at the top because they wouldn't need to differentiate this from a widescreen copy...So maybe there's still hope?

DVD Planet is taking pre-orders for two separate versions of Ella Enchanted. Widescreen or Fullscreen. Let's hope they know something that the other retailers don't!

New cover art courtesy of DVDEmpire. Personally, I like the old one more:

Anyway, I'm just glad it's not fullscreen-only.

Which is odd because the picture that accompanies it is the one with the "Fullscreen" banner on top. Leave it to Disney marketing to contradict themselves.

And why is it on the Disney DVD site if it's a Miramax film?

Yes, of course they do. But Miramax and Touchstone films are normally covered on Video.com.
