:? No, it's nothing anywhere close to being like American Idol. It's a variety show for and by kids, more comparable to things like Howdy Doody, The Little Rascals, All That, Round House, etc. (What was that one show that used to show shorts of Mr. Magoo, Inspector Gadget, The Chipmunks, etc.?).

It's not exactly like any of those, but shares some elements with it.

Mickey Mouse Club sounds lame to me, seems like we could have gotten an assorted or donald v2. I will still buy it though and who knows I might like it.

Trojan Mouse,

I checked up and you were right on the Figaro thing. As of now I can only find 2 cartoons with his title card, but he was featured in 7 different cartoons. (i'm chalking my mistake up to sleep deprivation) .

my guess is you are probably right on the MMC treasures set too, but my hope is that there will be more than just the first five episodes (although if they really are 1 hour episodes then that will be an over 5 hour set already :D )

I dunno, it doesn't seem like the MMC is best suited for a treasures set as much as a season set type of release (like Zorro).

Do you think we can hope for a season set release in the future?

I would argue that this is precisely why these treasures were created in the first place. To continue the legacy and vision of Walt Disney. Although things like the MMC had been done before, Walt Disney took it to a level that is still emulated by kids shows of today. The true life adventures were grounbreaking material, if not always accurate, they were the Discovery Channel and Animal planet of their day. What made Disney so great was that he looked beyond his companies natural talent for animation and pursued other venues of educational importance and entertainment. He was a modern genius. That is why MMC and True Life...is so highly anticipated by me and I am sure a whole host of other Disneyphiles!

Figaro appeared in the following "Figaro" shorts:

Figaro and Cleo, 1943
Bath Day, 1946
Figaro and Frankie, 1947

and these "Pluto" shorts:

First Aiders, 1947
Cat Nap Pluto, 1948
Pluto's Sweater, 1949

The seventh one could be Pinocchio or The Canadian War Bonds piece All Together, 1942.

No, the first five shows are only the FIRST WEEK. They were 1 hour shows (about 50 minutes or so after commercials) so these 5 shows will be a touch over 4 hours of material. Plus I'm sure they'll add significant extras.

There were a total of 260 1-hour shows. The 1-hour shows were the first two seasons, so I'm pretty certain there were 130 shows each year for years 1 & 2. Year 3 had 130 1/2 hour shows. Year 4 had 130 1/2 hour shows, but they were patched together from the first 3 years.

HOLY FREAKING CRAP!
:jawdrop:
That's almost as many episodes as The Simpsons! Looks like we won't be expecting complete seasons releases anytime soon. :(

mathewgb,
i would completely agree. don't get me wrong, i LOVE the MMC and the True Life adventures is one that I am highly anticipating. My comment was meant to show that i felt only releasing 5 episodes didn't do the series justice. i want season sets, and if they are too big then how about season one volume 1, and season one volume 2, etc.

by the way, is your screen name a send up to disney child actor matthew garber? pretty cool!

Lars Vermundsberget,
i think the other Figaro cartoon was another one with Minnie Mouse. It is interesting to note that Minnie Mouse did NOT have her her own title card cartoons, nor did Daisy. as a matter of fact were there any women on the title cards? huh i just thought of that. i guess they just weren't as popular. that's getting really off topic there, but maybe an interesting discussion none-the-less. anyway, thanks for the Bath Day note, i completely remember that cartoon and have it on the Cartoon Classics Gold Collection with Minnie on the cover.

I was thinking about the lack of female title cards as well. I've never seen any. They aren't as strong of characters, but I think it would be interesting to see a few.

I guess it'll be a cold day in hell before we have all MMC eps on DVD :(

I'll probably get the 5 ep 2-disc set anyway.

I can't imagine wanting all of the Mickey Mouse Club episodes. They would all seem the same after awhile. I am also hoping it is not just the first week. I hope they pick five of the better ones.

JJJ- good call... every episode might actually be a bit much, unless you just watched one a day over the course of years. It's really the same thing as a talk show... every episode of one of those would be impossible. Of course, they would still be easier to watch than what I am guessing is a rather formulaic series of shows.

It definitely should be the first week rather than 5 of "the better ones" chosen by some individual. Would it be the best "Fun With Music Day", the best "Guest Star Day", the best "Anything Can Happen Day", the best "Circus Day", and the best "Talent Round-Up Day" ? It would just be wrong not to include one of each. This a treasure set. It should show how it all started. Material covering some of the "best of" type clips from the series can be included in the extras, but if it is only going to have 5 complete episodes then those should be the first 5.

As for wanting all of the episodes, I want them. I do not expect to sit down and watch them all back to back. It might take a few years for me to find the time to watch every single episode, but I would rather have all of them available instead of only being able to watch a few of them over and over.

Also, more important than having them for me to watch and enjoy, I would like to have them for my children, nephews, and nieces to watch.

According to jebsdad's info, the whole series adds up to around 300 hours of of unique material (estimating commercial time and filler for season 4). That is less than an hour per day for one year. Unfortunately in modern times the average person in the US watches over 4 hours of television per day. I would much rather have the kids watching the Mickey Mouse Club instead of reruns of some the awful junk "children's programming" currently showing on the various networks. Even if the kids only watched a few hours of Mickey Mouse Club each week, they could easily go through the whole series in less than two years.

The idea that it would get boring after a while just does not make sense to me. Various long running shows have recently had their final episodes and for the most part, fans are lamenting that there will not be any more shows rather than complaining that they had become boring. The Mickey Mouse Club was a great show with a lot of variety including a lot of serial content that could basically be shows by themselves.
