It's a dumb quibble, but it kinda sucks that the high definition makes the bluescreen shots all the more obvious. I mean, I still prefer it to the DVD version, but nonetheless....

Wow, I don't know why I've been avoiding this thread but it looks like I missed out on the first comparisons. Even going by those little screenshots you can see the increased detail. I'm very very happy with the transfer, as for some reason, I was worried there wasn't going to be much of an improvement detail-wise. Many of the movies of the 70s and 80s used shitty film stock (Terminator, Predator, etc.), and are usually a step back from the large format productions of the 50s and 60s. I'm just glad there is fine detail and light grain, perfect.

Yeah, I usually don't like tampering but when the rest of the effects in this movie look so great, I would've liked them to digitally fix it (probably by color correcting/darkening the the bluescreen and digitally adding light from the fire to their clothing).

My tin set arrived this morning. Oh my! So many gubbins. All basically useless* but they sure add to the specialness of the package. I especially like the lenticular family photo. The siblings all disappear depending on the angle the photo is viewed at.

As for the Blu-ray discs, I put the first film on briefly and can confirm it looks spectacular. Never before has BTTF looked as good. The colours really pop, without looking over saturated or dull. It looks clean, natural and clear.

I quickly brought up the set-ups and payoffs U-Control track for a few minutes and it seems very comprehensive. It appears to be text only, but in the segment I saw there were hardly any pauses between information pop-ups.

To peruse something else classed as new, also put the Back to the Future Night archive special on (SD, 4:3 window-boxed) but really, it only took be about 6 minutes to see it was basically crap. I dare say viewers of the original will have a warm nostalgia towards it, but the new six part documentary (spread over all three discs, with a bias towards the first) will hopefully mean that that material is nothing more than a curiosity.

It's a comprehensive package, perhaps not quite as extensive as it could be (compare this to the Alien Anthology) but it seems to have a lot of love put into it.

Unlike some DVD to Blu-ray transfers, nothing seems to be missing from the DVD set - although the trivia-track now part of the U-Control interface may be rewritten.

* Especially the posters. Nobody will use them as posters, there's far too many folds and creases. But even the posters unfolded add to the awe of the package.

It's also on Disc 2 of the two-disc standalone Back to the Future DVD released in February 2009. That set also has "Back to the Future Night" (which is now a Blu-Ray exclusive in the 25th Anniversary set) and the focus-on-the-first-film-only re-edit of the fan-produced documentary Looking Back at the Future. It's not on the new set, since Universal produced Tales from the Future instead.

It may be possible that the producers of Looking Back at the Future (which is titled Looking Back to the Future on the 2009 DVD, likely due to it being a re-edit) will release the original version -- about all three films -- on their own later. Similar to how there's standalone DVDs for documentaries like "The Alien Saga", "Halloween: 25 Years of Terror", etc.

That UK giftset is mighty impressive. I'm satisfied with getting the standard US one for myself, but I think I may import the UK one for a friend of mine. She'll definitely eat it up.

And I agree the film looks spectacular. I haven't gotten to see the BD, yet, but I attended the 25th Anniversary screening Saturday which uses the same master. At times it doesn't even look like an 80s film. People have been freaking out screenshots that apparently exhibit too much edge enhancement, but I didn't notice anything at my screening, and all the reviews for the set so far have been glowing. I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow.

I wish the ride footage was presented in HD, but I'm still happy just to have it included (I never bought the re-releases from a year or two ago).

Heads up on the best price for Back to The Future Trilogy on Blu-ray.

Ultimate Electronics has the Blu-ray available for $42.99 and the SD version for $27.99.

Best Buy is asking $49.99 for the Blu-ray collection and $29.99 for the SD version.

Target has the Blu-ray advertised for $49.99 and the SD version $29.99

Wal-Mart is almost the same price. Blu-ray - $47.96, and SD $27.96.

So get your shopping done early and wisely and save some money wherever you can.

I'm disappointed on 2 thing:

1) The ride is presented in SD. WTF. This was filmed in IMAX and projected onto a Omnimax theater screen. This would've benefited from HD more then the actual movies. Damn I miss this ride, it was as much a part of my childhood as the movies.

2) That we don't get that cool looking tin set. I won't purchase anything with Digital Copies, so I'm pissed about the North American set, but would love this geek crafted non-Digital Copies set.

The second theatrical showing is today, and I'm really disappointed that we don't have it at our new AMC theater here in Vegas. Had the timing been a little different I might have actually been able to see it in LA instead, but oh well.

I'm not going to hop on the Blu-ray set immediately since I've got the old trilogy set on DVD and don't quite have a Blu-ray player yet. I really wish all that cool swag was included with the US version though (if it was, I'd probably be picking it up right now).

Thanks, I knew it was on the single disc release. I just had not gotten that one yet and had my original copy of the trilogy on DVD stolen by my brother. I'm more interested it sticking to DVD with these films, but the extra that is the biggest deal to me is the ride simulator. Does this mean that the new Blu Ray and DVD's are a 3 disc set by the way?

The Blu-Ray is 3 discs as everything for each movie is on its respective disc.

The DVD is 4 discs, as the movie discs contain the film, deleted scenes, commentary, and the different parts of "Tales from the Future", while the 4th disc is all the archival material from the previous releases as well as a few new items, including Back to the Future: The Ride.

You live in Las Vegas? Nice, I used to for a few months. I'm also sad becuase I was living in LA but now live in Utah while my wife goes to school, and we don't have any stinking AMC theaters here. DANG IT!

Yep! I grew up in a rural area in the midwest (not even a theater at all in my hometown) but have been in Vegas for three years now. One of the only stand-alone theaters here got converted to an AMC maybe a month ago; I'm guessing it might not have gotten this run since the place is so new. I've never lived in LA but it's where my fiancé is from so we drive over every so often. In fact we're heading over to the area on our honeymoon next week; he certainly wouldn't have minded taking me to the movie had it been showing then instead but like I said, the timing didn't work out.

We'll be hitting Universal Studios though, I always love seeing the set and some of the props for the film.
