Tangled (aka Rapunzel) Discussion - Part III
for the record, the one 'so-so' review in question is now being taken completely out of context.
the SONGS were described as so-so. the movie itself was not. of course, there's far more detail in the section hidden by spoilers, but the 'so-so' review actually says that the movie is true to the classic Disney Princess vision despite having a bit more of the male lead than one might expect (but without blame) and that it at times even rises to the level of 'Beauty and the Beast.'
Furthermore, the gripes about the songs (which still hold true in the so-so opinion) have nothing to do with Alan Menken (or at least very little). Songs are remembered for their lyrics and as such this is a result mostly of Slater's work. If you happen to be a fan of Slater, you may very well love the songs. It's an opinion.
As for 'everyone else' although I'm sure others have mentioned the songs (knowing full well Disney hasn't in its promotional material), the only comment I happened to have seen was that the songs *occasionally* rise to the level of 'A Whole New World' and 'Gaston.' Now while I do disagree with this statement, I find it odd that Gaston was chosen from all of the songs in Beauty and the Beast, which is arguably one of the best Disney soundtracks of all time. While Gaston is fabulous and a real credit to Ashman's writing skills, I'm not sure it's what you want your anthem to be when you have songs like Belle and the title song which are far more epic.

I LOVE that new footage!
My favourite parts are the muffins, the butterfly and the horse who pulls Flynns boot off. Especially funny because he lands on Rapunzel, lol.

Re: Glen Slater...I equate him as a lyricist to the equivalent of someone like Brett Ratner as a film director. At his best, he is adequate, but brings nothing special to the projects he is involved in.
He must have a great working relationship/friendship with Menken to keep working with him. Most of Slater's work is appalling though, most noticeably the Phantom of the Opera sequal, Love Never Dies. Some of THE worst lyrics I have ever heard.
I really wish Menken would find a wordsmith partner even remotely clever as Ashman, Rice and Schwartz were.

He just likes him more. They're like buddies and stuff. After his collaboration with Glenn on Home on the Range, they hit it off and it was Menken who requested Slater to be the lyricist for Sister Act, The Little Mermaid, and Tangled. I get the feeling that after Ashman's death, Glenn has been the only other lyricist that Menken bonded with. Regarding his collaboration with Steven Schwartz, I get the vibe (based on their interviews and such) that they don't like each other very much. All the times the two collaborated (Pocahontas, Hunchback, Enchanted), Schwartz was appointed by the studio as the lyricist. Menken definitely did not request for him as he does with Slater.Poody wrote:Because he's hot.CampbellzSoup wrote:why does Menken keep teaming up with Slater???
Too bad, 'cause with Schwartz, he produced really good results. Whether it was due to the competition, the clash of egos or the creative friction, the result was undeniably good.

I think this is the case as well. Also, I think lyrically, Home on the Range is Slaters best stuff. Little Patch of Heaven has such sweet lyrics.sotiris2006 wrote:He just likes him more. The additional Mermaid songs, Sister Act and... that Phantom sequel are awful.
