Re: Tangled
I'm not surprised by the "so-so" comment about the music. Of course, I've loved all Menken's work, but none of the films have been as strong lyrically since Ashman, tbh. Which is something he can't really control.
Btw, I know people like to point out HOTR because that movie's particularly unpopular, but I have never found anything inferior about the soundtrack, and went out to buy it right after seeing the movie. It never gets high points like "Part of That World" or "Hellfire," but you can't blame Menken for the film not being more dramatic. I've always felt the music was the only thing I didn't regret about the film. As for the yodeling song--I'd like to ask how any composer could have pulled that off, unless they're particularly acquainted with the yodeling "art."

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

are you kidding? A Little Patch of Heaven is easily among my favorite Menken tunes. The soundtrack is fine. The movie is incredibly lame though. But you can't blame Menken for a lousy script.sotiris2006 wrote:How about Home on the Range? I'm not saying that the soundtrack is completely crap. It's OK, i guess. I just don't find it to be up there with all of the other amazing Menken music. It could be because of the specific needs of the movie. The music usually complements the story if the latter is not good enough then the composer's creative resources are probably more limited.PatrickvD wrote:are you kidding? I have a list of all the lyricist he's worked with:
Little Shop of Horrors lyrics by Howard Ashman
The Little Mermaid lyrics by Howard Ashman
Beauty and the Beast lyrics by Howard Ashman
Newsies lyrics by Jack Feldmen
Aladdin lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice
Beauty and the Beast (musical) lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice
Pocahontas lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
The Hunchback of Notre Dame lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Hercules lyrics by David Zippel
Der Glöckner von Notre Dame lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Home on the Range lyrics by Glenn Slater
Enchanted lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
The Little Mermaid (musical) lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater
Sister Act the Musical lyrics by Glenn Slater
Leap of Faith (musical) lyrics by Glenn Slater
Tangled lyrics by Glenn Slater
His best works after Howard Ashman are either with Tim Rice or Stephen Schwartz in my opinion. I'd say the music I like the least of are all with Glenn Slater. Just my opinion.

It's difficult to judge music until we've fully heard it. Of course everyone has different taste. Menken's work with Ashman is brilliant, but his work with other collaborators is as well. Don't forget that the lyricist for "A Whole New World" was Tim Rice, not Ashman. I also love the music from Enchanted. It's amazing, and I think The Little Mermaid Broadway additions are fantastic, particulary "Her Voice" and "If Only." Some of you may dsiagree with me completly, but that's only natural. Everyone one has different opinions. Like I said, we might hold off until we've actually heard the songs.
And to comment on th fact the the Academy will no longer allow musicals to be nominated for score, all I can say is- Are they nuts!?!? This makes absoluetly no sense, and I seriously hope this is not set in stone. It's bad enough that they no longer perform the songs on the show. In a million hour telecast that can't squeeze in some music- cut out some the riduclous comedy bantor and let the music back in. i loved seeing the 3 sogs from Enchnated performed a few years ago. Can you imagine if "I Can See the Light" was nominated and Many Moore and Zachary Levi performed. I would love to see that.

I agree that Stephen Schwartz has done the best work with him since Ashman. Pocahontas, Hunchback, and Enchanted were all pretty well-done, imo. "Heaven's Light/Hellfire," "Just Around The Riverbend," and "That's How You Know" have become some of my favorite Disney songs, period. I can't remember, but he is doing Tangled with Schwartz, right? I hope it's not with Slater.Animalia wrote: His best works after Howard Ashman are either with Tim Rice or Stephen Schwartz in my opinion. And, yes, as I said before, I've loved all Menken's work--but the lyrics are relatively out of his control, and lyrics are at least half of the song. I've always thought Aladdin was pretty good music-wise, but I have heard complaints about it before. And I always remembered Hercules as being really good, but I've watched it lately and some of the lyrics seem a little weak. I still love "Zero to Hero" and "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" though.
As for "A Whole New World," I personally feel that it's better as a melody, without the lyrics.

I love those two songs but some of them not so much. Glenn Slater's lyrics I sometimes have problems with, for exampleMarianne81 wrote:I think The Little Mermaid Broadway additions are fantastic, particulary "Her Voice" and "If Only." She's In Love:
Glory be!
Lord above!
Gotta be she's in love!
I don't get the lord above part, it just seems very random and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Another example
Beyond My Wildest Dreams:
Look it's him!
So handsome and refined and slim
That part really annoys me, couldn't they have used something other then slim? I mean the way it's presented is that she thinks a great quality of his is that he is slim?
The lyricist is Glenn Slater, that's why I'm a little worried.Disney's Divinity wrote:I agree that Stephen Schwartz has done the best work with him since Ashman. My only guess with the "Lord Above" line is they were probably going for a Gospel/Soul effect for that part of the song. Sometimes it's forced into songs when it's not really necessary or doesnt fit the feel of the rest of the song. I would have to listen to it myself to determine.Animalia wrote: I love those two songs but some of them not so much. Glenn Slater's lyrics I sometimes have problems with, for example

io9 has a review of the film too:

I has no spoilers, but the author basically says that the movie rekindled her with her childhood memories of Disney:

I has no spoilers, but the author basically says that the movie rekindled her with her childhood memories of Disney:
While I can't yet give you my final impression of this film, I will tell you that my gut reaction afterward was to go home and immediately dust-off the old dress up tiara. Tangled transported me right back to the age of nine. While the latest batch of Pixar films have all moved me to tears, none of them has rekindled my childhood love for castles, adventure-seeking princesses, magic, zany pets and Prince Charming the way Tangled did.
Tangled accomplished this feat by either revisiting or reinventing the classic Disney tropes of the early 90s. Back when princess movies kicked ass. Rapunzel and friends unabashedly break into song, commonly ending with said singing character in the classic "hands pointed towards the heavens" pose, knee deep in a sweeping crescendo finale. Our new princess also has a collection of adorable animal friends, who sometimes outshine their human counterparts without even speaking (yes, the animals don't speak in this movie). Plus there's plenty of room for the long forgotten romantic duet, something we haven't seen since Aladdin's "A Whole New World" and Beauty and the Beast's "Something There."

Has this been posted yet? I don't believe so. It's a VERY POSITIVE "review" from the recent Tron and Tangled presentation Disney did for the press.

I'll be totally honest with everyone. I wasn't really looking forward to this movie until the new preview came out with Pink's song "Trouble" being used. I really hope they use this song in the movie somewhere, if not even for the end credits. It seemed to add a sense of "punk" to it, which I like. I hope they make Rapunzel (or whatever her name is in the movie) a take-no-crap kinda girl.

Today marks 50 days until the films release!!!!! I'm so excited! I can't believe I've known about this film since 2004 and now I'm finally going to be able to see it.
The advertising for this film has been really underwhelming in my opinion. I still feel like a lot of people don't really know what this film is or that it's even coming. Something I've decided to do is have a countdown on my facebook page. Since we're 50 days away, I'm starting today with changing my photo to a scene from Snow White and having my status be the title of the film, with some facts about it's release and it's release date. I'll change it everyday to the next film in line until i reach Tangled on it's day of release.
I actually started this a few days ago, by doing the same thing but with non DAC films. I've been getting a lot more responses than normal and I feel like a lot of my friends are noticing what I'm doing. It's bringing their attention to the fact that a new Disney film is on the way. I know my page gets around to over 1,000 ppl (bc i'll add anyone i'm familiar with, or let them add me) so, through word of mouth i'm at least reaching them. Maybe if we all did some advertising of our own pages, the word of mouth will spread.

Its nice to see Rapunzel not just sitting down, gazing wistfully out the window for something to happen to her. Its wonderful to see her create her own amusements and entertain herself. I can 100% see the spirit of Ariel within her, as Ariel seems to have been her template.
I think its extremely positive that we have had only one 'so so' review out of the many that have come in from sneak peeks and preview screenings. It would be dreadful if they were all saying it was pretty much a 'blah' movie!
And I am still beyond excited for Alan to work his magic, along with Glen.
