Since the Platinum line is done - How many did you get??

Post by CampbellzSoup »

I ended up getting them all the Disney freaking that I am...but how many did you end up collecting?

Also will you re-buy the Blu Ray Diamond releases??

The reason I'm excited about re-releases is the promotional marketing behind them...as well as it brings new excietment/experience to the films. I feel like their new again or at least getting rereleased again makes me feel nostalgic. You get to share and expereince your favorite films in a new format/new way over again with new people...great stuff.

(plus it doesn't hurt their usually only 10-15 on release week ;p)

According to my DVD purchase list, and including the pre-Platinum-name-but-Platinum-in-spirit Fantasia...

Aladdin - won in a contest on the now-defunct DisneyDatabase.com (run by former UDers Jens and Paka). Didn't open it (Kram had one too and we watched that one) until about three months later, when I moved to Florida for the college program. (October 9, 2004)

Bambi - bought at the Emporium after work in Magic Kingdom. One day when I decided to watch my DVD of My Fair Lady, my roommate quipped "Oh please, let's watch Bambi instead." (March 5, 2005)

Beauty and the Beast & Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - bought used and in near-mint condition at GameStop along with the OOP two-disc Tarzan and the then-OOP Peter Pan: Special Edition. Twas a great day for me at GameStop. (September 7, 2005)

Fantasia - bought the standalone DVD at E/B Games. No interesting story to tell here, unfortunately. (September 16, 2005)

Cinderella - bought at Wal-Mart with Star Trek: Nemesis: Special Collector's Edition and To Kill a Mockingbird: Universal Legacy Series. The cashier gave me an odd look given the wide range of films I was buying. (October 5, 2005)

The Lion King - was at GameStop buying the two-disc Mulan, the then-OOP Pinocchio, and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, and figured I might as well get The Lion King simply to have all the Platinums that were out at the time. Haven't watched since. (November 4, 2005)

Lady and the Tramp - bought at Target along with The Shaggy Dog and The Shaggy D.A.. I think this came with a pin or something, the first of the freebies I'd be getting with each Platinum. (March 10, 2006)

The Little Mermaid - bought at Target along with X-Men: The Last Stand. Neither of them have been watched more than twice since I bought them. The freebie was a bracelet which I gave to my friend who drove me to Target (I didn't have my licence yet). (October 3, 2006)

The Fantasia Anthology - acquired from my cousin during Thanksgiving. He worked at GameStop and I had told him a few weeks earlier at a party "If you ever find this set, let me know, I'll buy it from you." A few days after that, he called me up and said "I'm holding it in my hands. You'll get it on Thanksgiving." With the addition of his employee discount, I paid only $27 for it, which was pretty good given that e-bay prices were in the $90/$100 range by that point. (November 23, 2006)

Peter Pan - bought at Target and the free light-up pin it came with sat on my desk for a few years before I finally opened it. (March 11, 2007)

The Jungle Book - bought at Best Buy and gave the free Baloo plush to my brother Kram. (October 2, 2007)

101 Dalmatians - bought at Best Buy and this time kept the free Lucky plush for myself. He proudly sits on my DVD shelf with the likes of Snoopy, Mickey Mouse, Jaq, Gus-Gus, Eeyore, overstuffed Chip, Pluto, a nameless turtle, a nameless dalmatian on a keychain, and the USS Enterprise (which holds the 2009 movie in the saucer). (March 4, 2008 )

Sleeping Beauty (DVD) - bought at Best Buy and I still don't know what to do with the free alarm clock it came with. (October 7, 2008 ).

Pinocchio (DVD) - bought at Target once Lent was over and so if there were any freebies during the first week, I didn't get them. (April 13, 2009)

Sleeping Beauty (Blu-Ray) - bought on Amazon.com after some prompting from Kelvin (aka Disneykid). He said I'd be near tears watching the restoration in high-def, and that if I were disappointed I could slap him. I didn't slap him. (September 18, 2010)

I started collecting a little late in the game. Although I had all but a few of the DAC that were released on VHS, I didn't have any of them on DVD. The start of my "new" collection began this year with The Princess and the Frog on Blu-ray/DVD. After that I got the Snow White Diamond release, and then back tracked a little by getting the 2 Platinum titles that were available in Blu-ray/DVD combos; Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty. So, to answer your question, I have 2 Platinum titles!

I don't have any plans to back track any more than that, though. I want to keep my collecting to the combo packs, so I'll be picking up each DAC as they are released from this point on, whether in Diamond format or Special Edition, etc. (i.e. Fantasia/2000).

All of them! Even the two on Blu-ray (which I now kind of wish were just called Diamond Editions).

In the likely event that the Diamond Editions continue to offer some kind of improvement over the Platinums (which, at least in the case of those being upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray, is pretty inevitable by virtue of the higher resolution alone), I will continue to add them to my collection. For the time being, I'm still holding on to the Platinum Editions as well.

I cherish these movies enough to want even a slight improvement in their presentation while still holding on to the older releases for nostalgia's sake (not to mention supplements that sometimes get ditched in the upgrade).

But then how would Disney have marketed Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?

"The one that STARTED it all...is THIRD in our prestigious Diamond Edition line!"

Plus, in order to be a Diamond Edition, the Blu-Ray has to be awesome while the DVD version gets the shaft seven weeks later. Since Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty were more or less equal on both DVD & Blu-Ray (with a few exceptions*), they couldn't possibly be a Diamond Edition.

;) :P

I hope I get them all right, since they're not called 'Platinums' over here (just 'Special Editions' or 'Deluxe Editions'). I started a little late in the game, missing the first few raved-about Platinums. I own (in Platinum edition):

Pinocchio
Bambi
Cinderella
Peter Pan
Lady and the Tramp
Sleeping Beauty (with the book)
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin

That last one was my first 'Platinum' (in the trilogy box). I will pick up the new so-called 'Diamond Editions' for films that I don't own on dvd yet, like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. But, I will only buy dvd's and not BluRay discs.

If you don't know why: don't ask. We don't want to go open up another bloodbath. :P

I purchased all of them with The Lion King being my first Platinum aquired. I don't remember the order in which I bought the others, though.

I got them all, or their equivalents at least (they only started using that title in England in 2007 with The Jungle Book, and the only non-Region 2 one I have is Cinderella). The first one I bought was The Lion King in a HMV sale in 2004, and I got Snow White and Beauty and the Beast second hand that year (the only ones I got when they were OOP), along with Aladdin when it came out. Though I've yet to open them and get a player, I also bought the Blu-Rays of Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio through Amazon.co.uk in a Buy-One-Get-One-Free offer (they came to around £7-8 each! :D). But I also have the DVD Platinums of those movies too, which I bought when I was living on the continent (they're the German/Swiss editions). God, I feel such a reyqulla.

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs - Bought it brand new when it first came out (I think it was after Christmas).

Beauty and the Beast - Bought it used at GameStop in 2006

The Lion King - Also bought used at GameStop in 2006 (I think)

Aladdin - Bought it brand new at Target in 2004.

Bambi - Bought new at Wal-Mart in 2007

Lady and the Tramp - Bought new at Target in 2006.

The Little Mermaid - Bought new at Best Buy in 2006 (with the Flounder plush)

Peter Pan - Bought new at Target in 2007

The Jungle Book - Bought new at Best Buy in 2007 (with Baloo plush)

101 Dalmatians - Bought new at Target in 2008 (with the exclusive zipper pulls)

Sleeping Beauty - Bought new at Target in 2008

Pinocchio - Bought new at Target in 2009

So basically, I have them all except for Cinderella (I did see it at Meijer a couple years back for 9.99 and foolishly passed it up).

I've picked them all up at various points. The one I really lagged on was 101 Dalmatians; I almost bought the Limited Edition several times after it was out of print a few years back but the $35.99 price tag kept scaring me off; I opted to wait for the next release, which ended up being the Platinum. And oddly enough, I didn't pick up the Platinum until this past year!

Unfortunately, I've lost Cinderella. :( I've debated picking it back up again a few times, but probably won't until it's either re-released or if I find it used on a store shelf at a reasonable price.

And as for re-buying on Blu-ray, it depends on the individual film, what the bonuses are, and if I can get a good deal. Right now I'm more than happy to pick up the combo packs when they offer those awesome $10 coupons. :D

all except Bambi.

So that's Snow White, BatB, Lion King, Aladdin, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, and Pinnocchio.

I bought (or received) them all in their respective release years, almost always within the first week of release.

I'm only missing The Lion King - that one came out during a VERY cash-strapped financial time for me, and I had to choose between that DVD or Sleeping Beauty, and SB will always win out over TLK for me. And then it just always seemed like I wanted something else more than TLK, until it was too damned late to get it.

All the rest, however, I was able to get almost immediately. I had to wait until shortly after Christmas for Snow White, I waited close to a month for Pinocchio, Lady And The Tramp had to wait one whole day, and I got Beauty And The Beast like the Friday after it was released. All the rest were day 1 purchases, though.

I got them all except for Snow White and Beauty and the Beast. The first Platinum i bought was Peter Pan. The only one I bought used was The Lion King.
Pre-Tangled DACs I'm still missing:
Fantasia
Make mine Music
Beauty and the Beast
Fantasia 2000

I should have my DAC collection completed by the end of this year or early 2011.

I have every one of the "Animated Classics" on DVD and/or Blu-Ray except for one...The Lion King.

I didn't start collecting till late 2004 and ended up missing out on it. I did end up buying BatB and Snow White Platinum Edition off Ebay, but I just borrowed my friends LK Platinum and decided to wait for Blu-Ray.

My first Disney DVD in general was "Dumbo: 60th Anniversary Edition," followed by "The Sword in the Stone Gold Edition" and then "Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition." My first Platinum Edition came next which was Aladdin.

I own the whole line. In fact, I won EVERY DAC on DVD or now Blu Ray. I've posted this before, but my rule with Blu Ray is I right now only buy Disney and Pixar films on the format, and only films from 2005 and on. Everything before then I'm sticking to good old fashioned DVD.

Would I ever think of "upgrading" my Platinum titles to Diamond? Well, first off, I'm not so impressed with the new line. I think for many of the titles thus far, the DVD's are actually superior. But, should any of my pre-2005 titles end up destroyed and I can't replace them with DVD's, then and only then would I think about it.

My first was "Beauty and the Beast", but I don't think I really knew what a Platinum was back then. It was just a special edition with two discs and this weird new cardboard covering. Funny thing, my parents bought it for me for Christmas, and I was helping take the groceries out and I saw it. My parents knew that, but they made me wait anyway, but I already knew where they were hiding it (upper part of my dad's closet), so when it was safe, I'd go in there and just stare at it. I was truly marveled by that slipcover.

Then, I got Cinderella. I remembered liking it as a kid, and I think I knew what a Platinum was for the first time ever. This was right when it was released.

After that... I want to say Aladdin or Bambi. I know I got Bambi on my birthday, but I may have gotten Aladdin a little bit before that.

After that, I bought every Platinum immediately after it was released. I bought "Sleeping Beauty" twice, first on DVD and then as my first Blu-Ray (before my Blu-Ray player had even arrived in the mail!). Since SB, I've bought ever Platinum/Diamond on Blu.

The only Platinums I never got were "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "The Lion King".

I'm planning on re-purchasing all the Platinums as Diamonds, and I've even pre-ordered BATB.

Have all the Platinum-editions on DVD. Will be buying all the Diamond editions on Blu-ray. (Same applies to non Diamond-titles like Aladdin and Fantasia.)

I like to collect the Disney-classics, there are always new cover art and new bonus material to enjoy. Besides, there are usually a slightly different version of the film that's released each time the movie comes out in a new edition; either the colors have been changed, the movie has been restored in a way or it comes in HD for the first time.
