Oh man, I'm a bit disappointed we're still not getting the exact theatrical version. Surely Disney still has a film print of '91 they can use that's still in good shape... but I'll still pick this up. I could use this movie in some form besides my old VHS tape from when I was a kid, and besides, I could use the DVD copy for my frequent on-the-go commuting between home and college (the only reason I'm caving in and buying combo packs when I don't have a Blu-ray player...).
On the subject of the WDP logo, I'm a bit surprised they changed it for all versions and even added the WDAS logo with Mickey. I suppose it's not that severe since the WDP logo in Beauty was just the standard "When You Wish Upon a Star" music. But I don't know how they will fit the newer logo on movies that don't use the "WYWUAS" music (The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, etc.) when the time comes to put those on Blu-ray or their next home entertainment reissue whenever that may be.

DisneyChris, I can't thank you enough for posting all of those screen caps, even the exact scenes I requested. Thank you so much for coming on here and sharing it with us!
funloops, thank YOU for doing the screen-grab comparisons between the old DVD and the new. I feel MUCH better about the colors now after seeing those. In reality I never expected Disney to provide two separate transfers of the film but these colors are a drastic upgrade from the hideous fair we have had to deal with up until now.

They would just get rid of the audio for those (in the case of the lion king you would get ambient sounds of birds chirping while it appears). Whats the big deal?
and remember, there are different variations of the 3d castle intro, there's a long drawn out version, a shorter version where the camera doesn't move as much, and a really short version for trailers. I think those are the main ones, but I cant remember.

I'm just not seeing what makes this new version soo much better as to end all debate. A lot of scenes look exactly like the Platinum Edition but with the brightness slightly turned down. It's still a no-buy for me. To help you understand, here is a new comparison between many of the different versions:DisneyJedi wrote:Honestly, I have no idea why everyone's complaining with how the new restoration looks. Yeah, it's not the "original intended" colors, but at least they look- in a way- better than the look of the PE. We should all be happy it's that way.

As you will notice, there is not much difference between Platinum and Diamond.
PS: It's not a "restoration" but an alteration.

I know it's not a big deal. I'm just being a bit nitpicky. Hardly any of the movies released since the new logo debuted (I'm not saying there have not been any, but besides the 3D Hannah Montana concert movie and National Treasure 2 I can't think of any). I suppose they'll just put the birds chirping and stuff over the WDAS logo instead of Mickey whistling.Kyle wrote:They would just get rid of the audio for those (in the case of the lion king you would get ambient sounds of birds chirping while it appears). Though, if they do change the logos at the beginning of Hunchback having the beginning of the 3D castle intro be silent and have the Latin chanting play over the last few moments of the castle and WDAS logo would work really well.

@funloops: Yes, but it's so easy to mirror a digital object and I wonder why they just didn't do that. Anyway, I guess the mirroring will only be in the IMAX-version which I don't like at all.

I wouldn't call it lazy. Just kind of an odd thing to do. It looks good in motion though.
Perspective would be wrong. They would have to re-animate it.Scamander wrote:@funloops: Yes, but it's so easy to mirror a digital object and I wonder why they just didn't do that. Anyway, I guess the mirroring will only be in the IMAX-version which I don't like at all.

I was looking at that earlier and thought it looked as if it had just been copied and pasted. But the hair made me think, "No, I must be wrong about that." But you're right, they only moved the hair. Why didn't they completely flip the picture and put that in the window?Scamander wrote:Oh my gosh... They were too stupid to get the reflection of Belle's body right.![]()

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
You are right but it wouldn't be more noticeable than a exact copy of her. But I wonder why they changed it at all when they hadn't the time/ money to do it right.funloops wrote:I wouldn't call it lazy. Just kind of an odd thing to do. It looks good in motion though.

Just for kicks, I put together what I think the Lion King could end up looking like with the 3d version.Philo & Gunge wrote:I know it's not a big deal. I'm just being a bit nitpicky. HMMMMMMMM, What to say about the transfer....
WELL, I thought Disney would actually listen to there fans and give us what we wanted but they only gave us a little!
Honestly, I think I could stomach this transfer then the Paltinum Edition transfer. yeah, it may still be a little to bright in some places, but it is better then what we got in 2002. Still a buy for me lol!!!
Bonus features seem great! Also keep my Platinum Edition as well.
Might skip the 2-Disc DVD though.

Disney could at least have given us darker colors a la IMAX trailer, Lilo & Stitch trailer or The Princess and the Frog trailer for the "original" version, and let the "special" version have the colors that this whole release now has ended up with.
But, I have to say that it seems like an improvement over the Platinum edition (not that much difference in the colors was needed to improve compared to that edition), and all the bonus material sounds incredible. Just to bad Disney could not go all the way and really make this a "definitive" edition. It's even more annoying to see that they could not make the colors right when one takes a look at the bonusmaterial for this release, it really sounds like a solid release that must have taken some time to put together.
Here's hoping that the next release we'll see (3D & 2D Blu-ray?) will have even darker colors!
