Don't quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere on the forum that it was Lowry, the same company that has done the restorations for the titles recently released on Blu-ray.
I'm actually surprised Disney used Lowry to restore The Black Cauldron. It's the first time Disney's used Lowry to restore an old title that wasn't a well-received and/or profitable film.

Nice. Can't wait for my copy.

I found this on eBay:

I got this too with my purchase at Best Buy. The DVD was $14.99. I also got Prince and the Persia as well. :)

Anyone watch this yet? Is the transfer really better then the Gold Classic Collection? :? :)

I got my copy today at wal-mart for $13. It also came with a trick-or-treat bag, but mine is different. I also tried to get Prince of Persia on BluRay, but apparently there was a shipping mix-up and my wal-mart got no BDs and double the order of DVDs. So i guess i'll get PoP another day lol.

Anyhow, I watched it today as well and the restoration is a ton better than the Gold Collection. Granted, I was watching it on my computer while working on a parade float so I didn't really watch it too closely, but I didn't see hardly any grain at all. I want to compare this films restoration to some of the PE's honestly. It really showed this film in a new light for me and made me appreciate it a lot more.

btw, i'm also put off by the lack of a slip cover (not that it really matters).

That's another thing I was going to ask, mine didn't have a slip cover as well, it's factory sealed with the trick or treat bag. I mean, the slip covers aren't a big deal to me, but I like to have them with the other DVD's that are in my collection. But as long as the restoration is good, I am good lol. =)

goofystitch got it earlier because of the Disney Movie Club, and he posted up comparison captures of the GC and 25th Anniversary edition. The 2010 restoration has brighter colors, crisper lines and a clean image overall. Just look a few pages back.

Wow....now if the next DAC that gets a sub par release and if it doesn't get a slipcover I think Escapay will be doing the Merlin and giving out Pink Elephants on Parade while eating alcholic Milk Buds followed by a slipcover bonfire with Gromit :P

Though Escapay, what would happen if the did release a better version of The Rocketeer on DVD but it had a Slipcover? Would you make an exception of keeping the slipcover or will it be put in the bon fire if that day should ever come :P

Me, I don't really care for slipcovers. I only keep a few on some of my Platinum Editions and the DVD+Blu combos.

Is the trick or treat bag sealed or attached to the DVD or do they give it to you at the counter? Anyone know how long this promotion will last?

At the store Walmart, not the website, right? I have a couple dollars left on a gift card to use, so that would be perfect if it really is that cheap!!!

MJW - The bag is shrink-wrapped to the film. The James and the Giant Peach DVD also has this deal right now.

Amy - It was $13 in the store. I'm not sure if that is a temporary new release price or not though.

Kraken Guard - it's located under Special Features, then Backstage Disney.

--edit--

Another thing that pissed me off is that this is only worth 75 pts on Disney Movie Rewards. Are we really getting so stingy that they had to take 25 pts away?

Not only is there no slipcover, but it is only worth 75 Disney Movie Rewards Points. I'm afraid to put the disc into the player - the movie might shut itself off after an hour. I guess Disney is making it clear where they stand on DVD.

I have a feeling it's more the film than a distaste for DVD. I'm sure the company acknowledges the fact that it is not a top-seller. In fact, it might be one of the worst selling films. The lack of a slip-cover might be them trying to save some money on the actual release of this film. It's amazing that it received a Lowry restoration, and therefor IMO definitely worth the upgrade. The deleted scene is also kinda nice.

Now, the 75 pt thing is just an overall low blow. I really don't know what to make of that. I feel like Disney should offer 200 pts to get people to buy the thing lol.
