Well, I really don't have anything to contribute except for the fact that the VHS trailer can be viewed on Best Buy's product description page of this new release. It's probably already been mentioned, but if it hasn't and people want to watch it, you know where to find it.

MJW wrote:I know we've discussed this a million times before (so don't roast me for it), but I'm really hoping we get a Blu-ray/DVD combo release in addition to the DVD only. I'm wondering if Disney sees moderate to decent sales of the DVD release, they'll go ahead with a Blu.
If Alice in Wonderland is any indication, perhaps we'll see a Blu-ray release in September 2011. But I doubt a one-year grace period between releases is what Disney has in mind for such a low-priority title to them. Especially since The Black Cauldron was initially planned for release in June 2009, only to delay it a year and a half in order to barely promote the film's 25th Anniversary.

If past release schedules for the film are any indication (since most of the DACs have always had a steady release rate that can be traced from theatrical re-issues to VHS releases to DVD releases), the next release will either be 2 years from now (the 1998 VHS was followed by the 2000 VHS & DVD), or ten years from now (as the 2000 DVD was followed by the 2010 DVD). Either way, by then I doubt Disney will still be issuing combo packs.

The Black Cauldron Release Schedule:
July 24, 1985 - Theatrical Release
Sometime in 1989 - "Walt Disney Classics" VHS Release - cancelled (according to wiki, take that with a grain of salt)
August 4, 1998 - "Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection" VHS Release
October 3, 2000 - "Gold Classic Collection" DVD & VHS Release
September 14, 2010 - "25th Anniversary Edition" DVD Release

So none of The Black Cauldron DVDs in America have slipcovers? My pre-order came on accident today along with my Prince of Persia Blu-Ray from Amazon, and I didn't get a slipcover. I'm afraid to open it, because I might return it later in hopes I can get a slipcover, purely for consistency's sake, or else it'll look out of place in my Disney DVD collection (not a single one without a slipcover). I'm that OCD.

Otherwise, I'll have to place it with my Disney Misfits (i.e. Hercules, HoND)

You can solve that problem by removing slipcovers from every Disney DVD in your collection. Then they'll all consistently be slipcoverless and you can un-misfit The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules. :D

Or, if you want, go to Office Max, tell them to scan the cover art of The Black Cauldron and print it on thick cardstock, fold it around the case, glue it where necessary, and voila, you've got a homemade slipcover.

Aww, but I love the slipcovers. They're shiny and don't have an ugly glare like normal cases do. :D

As for the second option, I'm terrible with Arts and Crafts, so I'd probably waste my money and ruin The Black Cauldron all at once. Lol.

I'm just curious if all copies of The Black Cauldron are "slipcoverless". If so, I can live. Hopefully, there will be a Blu-Ray soon, but that's just wishful thinking.

That's what I got. My niece will love the bag. Couldn't believe how cheap it was. $13 minus the $3 coupon I had. :D Still I wish it were BLU.

Can someone with both the new and old DVDs post a comparison? Just looking at the shot of the witches in the clouds, I'm noticing way more vibrant colors then I ever did before (and I've only seen the movie once, years ago, on VHS).

Also, any idea who provided the restoration?

How much better did you expect? Something like:

"OMG! Triple witches! All the way across the skyyyyy! They're so bright and vivid! OMG! It's starting to look like QUADRUPLE witches!!!! Ohh... Ohh.... They're so BEAUTIFUL!"

What I'd really like to see is an image comparison between the Gold Collection and the new 25th Anniversary Edition. Luke says it's clean and colorful, compared to the dirty and artifact-ridden GC DVD.

And I ordered a copy at Deep Discount. It's on backorder, but hey it's a steal for $14.61 (which includes free shipping and no taxes).

The DMR Facebook lady said that the email with the $3 off any Disney dvd or blu ray was sent out at random to some members. I just got lucky.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere on the forum that it was Lowry, the same company that has done the restorations for the titles recently released on Blu-ray.

Out of curiosity, what does the trick-or-treat bag from Walmart look like? Anyone got a photo?

Finally, i have added the Black Cauldron to my collection of DVD's.

After only being able to watch the video tape every so often for so long, i can say i can see a big difference with how the screen looks.. They did a pretty darn good job! I found it fairly intriguing how you couldn't really see the Horned King's face until he got splashed in the face. It actually took me off guard with how the eyes glowed as well: They seemed redder and more.. Sinister looking.

Watership Down, anyone? John Hurt(The Horned King) Does General Woundwort's voice in the animated TV Series. In the movie version of Watership Down, he does Hazel's voice. In the little Disney Short on the DVD, the witches name is Hazel.. Coincidence? Probably.. But it's still kinda funny :P
