It is the Diamond edition version of B&tB (although the "Diamond" title is reserved only for Blu-ray; DVDs are just named "2-disc set"). As for Enchanted Christmas, I don't think it will include anything new because the cover art is the same with the previous release.

25 days left until this is officially released. I wonder when we'll start seeing reviews as the quicker I can get confirmation on the colors, the quicker I pick up my IronPack (if Best Buy still has any left) and pre-order the damn thing.

I'm still holding on to hope that there is a gallery full of publicity material hidden on there somewhere as I absolutely love seeing poster art, lobby cards, billboards, Oscar material, etc. At least we know the trailers and TV spots are on there.

Based on the press release, BBFC breakdowns, and online listings, I've compiled a breakdown of the Diamond Edition Blu-Ray & DVD. I'll note what material is ported over from the Platinum Edition DVD, Blu-Ray Exclusive, and ported over from the Work in Progress CAV Laserdisc (one minor thing, but still notable). There will also be a list at the end featuring material not on the new Blu-Ray.

Text descriptions for new features are borrowed from press releases or other promotional listings.

Beauty and the Beast (1991, 2002):
Diamond Edition Blu-Ray & DVD - October 5, 2010 (Two-Disc Blu-Ray & DVD)
Two-Disc DVD - November 23, 2010, $29.99 (Two-Disc DVD)

Technical Specifications: Blu-Ray
1.78:1 Widescreen - Enhanced for 16:9 TVs
7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio: English
5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theatre Mix: French, Spanish
Subtitles: English, Spanish
22 Chapters

Technical Specifications: DVD
1.78:1 Widescreen - Enhanced for 16:9 TVs
5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theatre Mix: English, Spanish
Subtitles: English, Spanish
22 Chapters

Disc One: Beauty and the Beast - Feature Film & Special Features

Feature Film: (
-Beauty and the Beast (Blu-Ray configuration) - 1991 film, directed by Kirk Wise & Gary Trousdale. Presented in two versions via seamless branching:
--1991 Original Theatrical Release (1:24:17)
--2002 IMAX Special Edition (1:31:06 - branches after "Something There", resumes after "Belle Leaves")

-Beauty and the Beast (DVD configuration) - 1991 film, directed by Kirk Wise & Gary Trousdale. Presented in three versions via seamless branching, with an introduction by producer Don Hahn for the Work In Progress Version:
--1991 Original Theatrical Release (1:24:17)
--2002 IMAX Special Edition (1:31:06 - branches after "Something There", resumes after "Belle Leaves")
--WiP Introduction (0:28 )
--1991 NY Film Festival Work In Progress (1:24:17)

(ETA: I'm still unsure how the WiP is being presented. It will be presented as a PiP option on the Blu-Ray - which I'm not too happy with - but some online sites list it as a feature on the second disc for DVD, and not as a seamless-branching option on the first disc. For now, I'll list it here, though I think on the two-disc DVD it will be a Disc 2 feature, since the Disc 1 will be the same that's included on the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo set.)

This confuses me too. On the front page of the official site, under the Blu-ray combo pack specifications, it says the 2-disc Blu-ray features the Original Storyboard Version of the film and the included 1-disc DVD would have the Work in Progress Edition of the film. That information conflicts with information in the Diamond Edition section of the site, so I guess we won't know for sure until it comes out, but it would certainly add value to the extra DVD if it had content that wasn't on the Blu-ray discs.

I imagine they used it as inspiration on how to portray the enchanted-talking-objects in the castle.

As I said above, I hope these are hidden somewhere on this set. I love this stuff, especially when they have poster designs that didn't make the cut. I also hope the demo recordings are on here and that isn't a feature dropped at the last minute.

As always, you're a treasure trove of information Escapay. Thanks for sharing.

So I was reading a book in my room and all of a sudden I hear "Beauty and the Beast" (song) playing downstairs. I realized, that's Jordin Sparks! So I run down only to catch the last 30secs of the new music video playing on Disney XD. Crap! I did manage to find a short video on youtube though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW_xd6SU2eQ Quality's not the best but it's watchable. Was anyone else aware that this was airing?

!!!! MAGNIFICENT!!!! Truly! Oh, so, so classy, so cinematically, mysteriously classy and artsy!

That really is too great. But, I must ask, why Criterion Collection? That isn't Disney, is it?

You're welcome. I'm also hoping the publicity galleries are hidden somewhere. It wouldn't be the first time. I think there's a hidden gallery on Sleeping Beauty relating to Disneyland. Been awhile since I went through the supplements, so I'm not entirely sure.
Disney Duster wrote:why Criterion Collection?
Because Criterion is known for their high-quality restorations/transfers, thoughtful extras, engaging reading material, and a willingness to use vintage/archival material relevant to the film. As opposed to Disney, who slack around on their catalogue live-action films, generally produce surface-level-information featurettes, has done away with most inserts (which weren't very informative anyway), and seem to hate trailers, original on-set interviews (before they become the promotional fluffiness of the past 15 years), or vintage television programs.

Criterion has partnered with Disney before, via releases of Touchstone films, generally the work of directors Wes Anderson and *shudders* Michael Bay. On occasion, they'll focus on something slightly out-of-the-norm (e.g. "The Golden Age of Television" box set, "Monterey Pop Festival", the upcoming "America Lost and Found: The BBS Story", or the Merchant Ivory Collection), but they generally pick films based on the director. Most of Kurosawa's films are released by Criterion, and they also have some box sets devoted to Cocteau, Malle, Ozu, Truffaut, Bergman, Cassavetes, etc.,

They've never handled a Disney feature before, and I remember reading somewhere that it's because Criterion chooses not to pursue licences for any animated work at all (Disney or not).

Which is ironic, since I've listened to a few Criterion commentaries in which the commentators mention a Disney influence on the film that's being commentated on. It'd be great for Criterion to actually release a Disney film (live-action or animated).

I'd certainly like for Disney to licence out Song of the South to Criterion.

Along with Fantasia (or by extension, Walt's first five animated features).

And the UK Historical films.

And for good measure, throw in the package features, since they'll never get respect from Disney.

And just to see if anyone's paying attention, a Criterion release for The Boatniks would be amazing. :P

A few of Ghibli's films really should be put out via Criterion. That mgiht be the only way we get Only Yesterday stateside, and Princess Mononoke is in dire need of an upgrade.

!!!! MAGNIFICENT!!!! Truly! Oh, so, so classy, so cinematically, mysteriously classy and artsy!

That really is too great. But, I must ask, why Criterion Collection? That isn't Disney, is it?
Yeah, I was just thinking about commenting on his photoshop (especially because noone else had). It's really well-done. Simplistic and effective. :)

OmG! The video looks great. I only wish the sound quality was better--but beggars can't be choosers. :P Thanks so much for that.

I'll be watching the Disney channel now (at the end of every show). Fates be kind...

Does anyone know in what form are the deleted scenes?
they are in the form of storyboards sequences or finished fully animated sequences?

The press release has been out since late March, but they never issued another that actually listed special features.

From the little we see of the Purdum Reel in Waking Sleeping Beauty, that material is likely all storyboards with temp audio. I don't know how they'll present "Belle in the Library", though it likely will just be storyboards.

The deleted scenes that are ported over from the Platinum likely are the same presentation they were there. "Be Our Guest (Maurice Version)" is pencil animation and storyboards (I think), "Human Again" is storyboards, "Death of the Beast (Original Score)" is pencil animation and storyboards. I'll have to re-watch them to check.

Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition

Well why not, to explain what the heck happened with that thing?

From the sounds of it there should be Criterions for every big, good animated classic, pretty much almost anything before probably Treasure Planet. If I must get specific, how about everything Walt made before Sword in the Stone, then Jungle Book because it was the last, and then everything from Black Cauldron on to...Hercules or Tarzan or Mulan, whichever was the last good one.

I think that clip from "Alice" with the doorknob will be included to relate to the task of building characters out of inanimate objects. I also assume that's the reason why "Music Land" is appearing again after being on the "Snow White" Blu-ray.

There's an even longer version over at the Amazon page, 1:39 mins as well as a new bonus feature clip talking about "Be Our Guest".
And there's also 9 new clips over at IMDb! Clips galore! Comparing the new clips and the older ones, I'm definitely noticing a difference particularly in the shadows.

To entice consumers to go Blu.

If it's a feature that can't be utilized on standard DVD (BD-Live, more interactivity in games and navigation, a better-functioning PiP option that doesn't bring compression issues, etc.), then I'm fine with it being Blu-Ray exclusive. But if it's something as normal as a documentary or art gallery, I don't see why it has to be exclusive unless disc space is an issue. In Beauty and the Beast's case, disc space actually is, as the "Beyond Beauty Experience" alone is nearly four hours of material, and that's not even including the 73 minutes of Classic DVD Features, 31 minutes from the two additional documentaries, and Jordin Sparks' music video.

The DVD itself will be quite packed as it is, since it will contain the 73 minutes of Classic DVD Features, as well as nearly 2 hours of new supplements (the main "Beyond Beauty" documentary and the two other documentaries). The only thing lost between the Blu-Ray and the DVD are the extensive supplements for Beyond Beauty (additional featurettes, classic cartoons, galleries), which is still a huge loss, but at least it's not as big a loss when you consider that the two-disc Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs DVD only included 46 minutes of Classic DVD Features and less than an hour of the 3.5 hours of newly-produced material.

Escapay wrote: Criterion has partnered with Disney before, via releases of Touchstone films, generally the work of directors Wes Anderson and *shudders* Michael Bay.
I've heard that unlike Miramax (which Disney is getting rid of) Touchstone is not actually a separate movie studio, just a banner Disney created for the purpose of releasing films that they don't want to be directly associated with the Disney name (The Nightmare Before Christmas was originally released under the Touchstone banner). Is this description accurate, or are there any major differences between Touchstone and Disney? Have any of the Touchstone releases been produced on the Disney lot, or are they happening somewhere else? Even Touchstone releases seem to steer away from the most controversial subjects (which seem to have been reserved for Miramax)

The funny thing is that I always though the Touchstone logo were really cheap-looking and seemed to be designed to look as different as Disney as possible, as if they wanted to trick the audiences into thinking that Disney had nothing to do with these films. Even the current version of the logo isn't particularly elegant.

---

OK, trying to get back on topic then: I don't see why Disney couldn't release an extra disc that collects all 'old' DVD bonus features so that we could get a complete package. That said, I don't really see the point in having two separate documentaries about the same theme that uses the same materials. But the problem is that if you interview the makers today they might not have exactly the same opinions and memories as they did ten or twenty years ago, and the newest aren't always the most essential.

Usually I feel that most Disney documentaries are created with that paradox that the creators want to tell you about how the movies were made but they also want to hold on to their trade secrets. And of course they have to save some of the information for the third ultimate blu-ray FutureXtreme release or something. Of course a documentary will never be 100% satisfactory because watching a documentary will never equal the experience of actually being there in the middle of it all.

I don't see why Disney couldn't release a featurette showing Glen Keane (some someone else) draw for an hour in front of the camera and just give us a glimpse into a normal workday. They have to make it appear so glamorous all the time, showing the real thing will probably take away too much of the magic in their opinion. It's like those recruitment ads for the military.
