So, what goes into restoring an actual painting anyway? I tend to only thin of restoration in the digital format, not a tangable existing work.

According to the article, and the blog (very interesting stuff, I have to say) it's basically about removing layers of varnish and paint of other restorations. Obviously, this has to be done extremely careful, otherwise you could ruin the entire painting. Must be a fun job :D .
