To Save Disney this 2010

Post by Disney Duster »

I messed up the poll, but I e-mailed Luke to fix it.

For a while now, I have been thinking of how I might be able to do something about the name Tangled for the newest Disney animated feature. I will not tell you how, but I have been thinking of how I can change it.

But if keeping it as it is will help more, then I won't do it. But you have to tell me what you honestly think. The main reason I want to keep the name is to keep with Walt Disney's and the Disney legacy, what the company is, and what it stands for. Being Disney. But what may be more important is keeping the studios alive.

There has been a lot of talk about Walt Disney Animation Studios, the heart of the company, what powers almost everything about Disney, being in trouble.

There has been talk that if their newest animated feature, Tangled does not do very, very well, then the studio could stop producing many animated features, and then maybe get closed down.

So, I want to know. How do you think we could help them?

And specifically, do you think the name change to Tangled will help the film? Not the marketing, but the name change in and of itself? And then you can talk about the marketing and the film itself, too.

Because actually, for the longest time, I thought what was working against Disney was them being un-Disney, trying to be something else, trying to be something hip for today's audiences, that they just aren't.

I was thinking that if they showed that they are coming out with a real, set long time ago in a faraway land, traditional musical fairy tale, with a classic name, that it was what looked and felt like a Disney Classic, then people would go see that more, actually.

I don't think the name is going to do anything, negative or positive. It's just a name, Duster. That's it. The only thing that matters is the film: the characters, the songs, the plot, the animation.... In the end, it doesn't matter what you call it. Tangled is going to be what Tangled is going to be, and magically making Disney call it "Rapunzel" won't change anything. It's time to build a bridge and get over it.

I am trying to figure out if the very name will help or hurt the Walt Disney Animation Studios.

If it won't help or hurt it at all, then it could be the original name which would actually probably help it.

I miss the options:

'I don't care'

'Name change?'

'Another thread about the name change?!'

'Let's defrost Walt and ask him!'

'Are you really so stupid as to think something as trivial as a name change could influence the future of the entire Disney company?'

Original name? You mean "Rapunzel Unbraided?"

Look, there's obviously a reason they wanted to call it Tangled. I don't think that Glenn Keane and the directors of the film would have agreed to the change (and I do think that they would have had a say) unless there was a reason. Look, here's the deal:

"Rapunzel" is a fairy tale about a girl who is trapped in a tower, and it ends with her getting out.

"Tangled" is a fairy tale about the same girl, but the story begins when she gets out. It's not about just getting free, it's about coming into her own and finding herself. Maybe it's a different story to tell. Maybe it needs a different name.

I'm not sure that this is true, but Duster, you weren't there when they made this film. You don't work for Disney, you weren't an animator or a storyboard artist or anything. You have no idea what is going on in that big blue hat, and neither do the rest of us. If you believe in the "Disney essence," and I know you do, then you should be able to trust the artists to make their own decisions, the right decisions about their work.

But you know yourself, didn't you know, they admitted the reason they changed it was the marketing department, not the directors, changed it to appeal more to boys? They actually came out and admitted that.

True. Maybe that's where the idea came from. But someone on the project actually ahd to agree with it.

Oh, and as for this thread.... IDK, do you think you could change the title? Not only does "To Save Disney this 2010" not make any sense, but it also doesn't really have anything to do with what this thread is about: Yet another complaint about Tangled's name.

You can't. Especially not with a poll on a fan site discussion forum.

I am surprised that Disney fans believe that Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," will not do well. But what about the story, the characters, the art, and best of all, the musical numbers? I heard from Mawnck that he or she has seen a test screening of Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," and said that it is going to be the best animated movie up-to-date. Sorry to say this, but this thread could be nonsense. Disney has already made its decision about the name change, and this thread is not going to change their mind, unless if they keep hearing boys say something like: "This is a Shrek rip-off (which is not according to Mawnck)," "It looks dumb," "The trailer is pathetic," "The name of the movie does not make sense," or other that could criticize the movie. But the good question is this: How would you know without seeing the movie? Wise men says: Never judge a book by its cover. Always look deep inside than out. I too dislike the name change as well, but what Disney did is their choice, and there is nothing we can do, but to get used to it. But look at the bright side, at least it can still be called Disney's, "Rapunzel," in Europe. Once it is ready for release onto Disney DVD, you can just buy Disney's, "Rapunzel," from Europe, than Disney's, "Tangled," in the US, and find the English version of it from Europe. And there is only one man that can help, and that is Robster 16. He can help find the Disney DVD of Disney's, "Rapunzel," in Europe when the time comes. I will say this to Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," according to spoilers who know the story: It will probably do good, but not too good. There could be other movies that can do better than Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," like, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," despite being in two parts. But who knows, what if Disney's, "Rapunzel (Tangled)," does succeed against, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," including DreamWorks Animation's, "Megamind?" That depends when it shoots out in theaters, November 24, 2010. I understand that one of you has complaints about Disney's decision to get boys to see the movie, but that is their choice. As for me, it takes time to get used of the name change, but I think, "Rapunzel," would be a better name than, "Tangled." And even though it is called, "Tangled," I will always call it, "Rapunzel."

As long as the movie is good, they could call it whatever they want. It still surprises me that some people will think the movie will be better when it's named Rapunzel than its actual title. If it sucks, it'll be 'because it's named Tangled, and that's such a Shrek ripoff'. If it's actually good, then it'll be despite the title, probably.

I was originally really against the name change for Rapunzel, and I would have admittedly preferred it to stay that way. Yet having had time to dwell upon it a bit more, I think that the retitling can be justified, and it's really the fault of Disney themselves for having to resort to such a thing. If they hadn't created the ultra-pink Disney Princess line in the first place (and continue to pimp out their characters like this, this, or this for a quick buck), then boys would be more responsive to "girly sounding" films. I do still think that they could have gone for a better new title, though, one which doesn't seem so vague and ultimately undescriptive of the film itself. One proposed new title for Rapunzel was The Secret Tower (or something like that), which I think would work better in describing the film yet still positioning it at a more gender-neutral audience.

But I don't think that the retitling overall though is going to have a huge impact on what the film is. Sure, it could seem odd for a fairy tale to end up having a name best befitting a romantic comedy. Yet regardless of what the marketing people want us to think, the name change was just too far down the line for the film to be drastically turned into anything other than what was as originally planned; a sincere new version of a classic fairy tale, not a loud, crass spoof on the classics.

And now to the question: how can we help Disney? By watching the movie in its theatrical release, and encouraging friends and relatives to do so too. With Disney in a spot of bother at the moment, is boycotting it over some silly executives' decision to rename the film going to really be productive? Even if the movie tanks more spectacularly than the Titanic, we'd then be able to at least say that we didn't contribute to its failure. And if it doesn't do well in cinemas, then we could get the DVD or Blu-Ray, boosting those sales. Let's face it, there are surely quite a lot of people at Disney who probably want Tangled to go back to the title of Rapunzel, but with trailers and promotional footage already out, the point of no return has been crossed. Just going to see the film and watching it for what it is is going to be the best thing we can do.

You raise an excellent point here, methinks. It's Disney doing its usual chasing success with such reckless abandon that it affects other things they're trying to do. The Princess Mob is all girly, the Disney Fairies are girly, the Disney Channel is girly, Radio Disney is girly, the toys are girly ... Disney is now synonymous with neon-pink super-girly (live action features notwithstanding), and suddenly it's "hey - where did the boys go? All the other animation studios get boys, why not us?"

Maybe what they should do is Who Wants to Be a Girly Princess Fairy Miley High School Millionaire Pin Trading AP Holder and just collapse the whole company all at once (after a few quarters of INSANE profits, of course).

BTW Wonderlicious ... Tangled does NOT retell the traditional fairy tale. It's a new story that borrows some elements from the old one. I think it's a wonderful movie, very entertaining, very sincere, and very Disney (in the good sense), but if you're looking for the whole "Rapunzel Rapunzel let down your hair" thing, you'll be disappointed.

The Secret Tower wouldn't work, BTW. They don't hang out in there all that much. It's a movie about getting out.

I just read this whole thread while listening to that....we should add circus music from youtube to debate threads more often..much more entertaining :P In fact there are a few threads I have in mind would be more comedic listning to circus music while reading some threads that just circle around like a clown car Image

Seriously? I'm still worried sick to my stomach about the animation department of the company's fate as we wait to see whether or not Tangled will be great, both financially and critically. :(

'Rapunzel' is much better than 'Tangled'. To be honest though I couldn't care less about WDAS anymore after the rubbish they have been churning out, The Princess and the Frog may have been a much better effort but it was still pretty mediocre in my opinion. Things don't stay the same forever and this animation department has been going for for 81 years now.

I have realised for some time, even back when it was still called Rapunzel, that we were going to get a very loose adaptation of the traditional tale (more so than any preceding bar The Princess and the Frog, and perhaps Chicken Little if you class that as a fairy tale). :p That's why I called it "a new version", meaning that a lot has been changed while some elements and the general premise have remained the same (by general premise, I mean: a beautiful maiden with long golden hair is locked away in a tall tower deep in the woods by a wicked witch, until a handsome intruder turns up). If I sounded confusing and seemed as though I were expecting it to be a straight retelling of the Grimms' fairy tale, I wasn't. I was simply trying to distance it from a cynical, crass and mocking type of film like Shrek.

Though I thought the title changed from Rapunzel to Tangeled was completely unnecessary, I don't think that alone won't hurt Disney. It just matters how it does in theatres that counts. Just wanted to add in my 2 cents. Now, you can attack this post if you wish!

Luke...is there a way to make both "Yes" answers be one "Yes"?

Okay...so...no one thinks the title will hurt or help how it does in theaters? No one thinks the title will actually effect how it does in theaters?

Also, if they were to change the title, do you think, thinking about it for a while, honestly, that changing it back to Rapunzel would hurt or help it now that there has been one teaser for Tangled? As in, now that one teaser has been released, would changing it back hurt or help now?
