Upcoming Classic MGM Musical BDs

Post by The_Iceflash »

Which classic MGM Musicals do you think will be next to get the BD treatment? When do you think the next ones will come out? Also post announcements/BD art as it becomes available.

I really hope that "West Side Story" is released on Blu-ray soon (even though it's United Artists rather than MGM). Such a great film!

I would also really like to see "Anchors Aweigh" (the musical in which Gene Kelly and Jerry the Mouse dance together) get released.

I'm waiting patiently for The Band Wagon (1953 & my favorite MGM musical) to come out. But given how long it took to come to DVD (2005), I may have to wait awhile. Also wouldn't mind Kiss Me Kate (1953, and in polarized 3-D!), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954, in CinemaScope and Flat Widescreen!), and It's Always Fair Weather (1955, a rather unpopular choice).

And hell, I'm still waiting for the great big Show Boat box set that Warner Bros. promised on DVD for years.

I don't remember if it's MGM, but I want Oklahoma on blu! Soon preferably, since I've never gotten it on DVD. Same with Singing in the Rain and 1776, though I do have 1776 on DVD. Those are among my very favorite non-Disney musicals besides American in Paris and stuff like Annie and Popeye. Oh, and again, I don't know which company would release these, but I'm dying for a proper rerelease, blu or not, of Bugsy Malone and Slipper and the Rose.

Oklahoma! is 20th Century Fox, Singin' in the Rain is MGM, and 1776 is Columbia. Bugsy Malone is, I think, Paramount. And off the top of my head, I don't know who has the rights to Slipper and the Rose.

"The Slipper and the Rose" was licenced out to Image Entertainment for it's DVD debut back in 2000, but I don't think they hold the rights to it anymore. Universal controlled the original cinema release in the States, though not the home video rights.

I'm hoping Image may want to re-aquire the rights for a Blu-ray release; as their original DVD release was one of their bestsellers for YEARS. Image does a great job with their BDs, too.

I believe Warner was working on a new restoration of Singin' in the Rain, since the one for DVD was done in 1080i, apparently, which renders it pretty much useless for a Blu-ray release.

Even though the An American in Paris BD practically disappeared of the face of the Earth with the exception of Barnes and Noble sold at list price.

An American in Paris is in stock at Amazon and Best Buy on-line which means you can order it in to your local store.

I'm waiting for these...

Meet Me in St. Louis (which is NOT weird, Albert :P)
The Harvey Girls
Easter Parade
Show Boat
Singin' in the Rain
The Band Wagon
Kiss Me Kate
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Brigadoon
The Glass Slipper (which hasn't even gotten a freaking DVD release)
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (apparently the restoration efforts on this would be too costly)

And while not MGM, I echo those who want The Slipper and the Rose. That film would look stunning in HD if done right.

Apparently the original Cinerama negatives of "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" are going to be as expensive as all get-out to restore for a Blu-ray release. I've never actually seen the film except the trailer, but have only ever heard great things about it. I'd be pleased if Warners restored it, a la "How the West Was Won", in a curved 'Smilebox' print.

I echo "The Glass Slipper", a movie I've missed since I sold off my VHS copy a while ago. And where's "Lili"? Please don't let these movies fall into the Warner Archives rut.

Hey, what's said in WEDnesday Show After Party stays in WEDnesday Show After Party! :P

Meet Me in St. Louis feels like a hot fudge sundae celebration of all things "oh, gosh! oh, gee!" and you end up a diabetic once you reach the cherry-on-top ending (though technically, the cherry on top is the beginning of a sundae...but the end of its preparation...er, now I'm getting lost). I can never really take the movie or its characters seriously, then again, I doubt I'm supposed to. It's got some good songs (about the only thing I genuinely enjoy in the movie is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"), but is just too silly and weird for me to watch happily unless I've had some uppers. And even then, I think the only part I'd get giddy for is Margaret O'Brien killing her snowmen.

My sister and I were searching all over the place for Showboat today. We could only find it at Hastings, of which Austin has none so we had to go to one of two neighboring towns, one to the north or one to the south (we went south). I hadn't really seen that one and she wanted me to. I liked it quite well, particularly the two famous songs "Old Man River" (which really makes the movie for me and I frankly wish the movie was more about/on the river) and Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine. Not the all-time best story I've seen in a musical by any means, though still very touching, but I LOVED those two songs, particularly OMR. Anyway, now I'm eagerly awaiting a blu-ray release of it.

And I'm going to have to see about getting Best Buy to order a copy of American in Paris on blu to their store for me. And Music Man too (that's out already, right?). That's not a big rush though, since I have the DVD of Music Man.

I also really want Hans Christian Anderson (don't know if that's MGM, again).

I got Showboat recently in one of those Turner Classic Movies 4 movie packs for around 14 dollars! I'm definitely becoming a snob when it comes to picture quality, because even upscaled on my player I could tell that Showboat is in BAD need a restoration and re-alignment of the original technicolor strips. Oz and GWTW have spoiled me on Blu!

"Hans Christian Andersen" was produced by the Sam Goldwyn Company; MGM has currently controls the home video rights.

Yes, the current DVD of "Show Boat" isn't a large step beyond what used to be available for it's various VHS releases through the years. I'm sure that if the title is eventually restored it'll be a full Ultra Resolution overhaul, a la "The Wizard of Oz".

Just bear in mind that the current "Show Boat" was one of the early snapper case DVD releases from Warners; like so many of their early classic movies product, not much imagination or care was put into it.
