Nemo beats Shrek/Matrix

Just found this lil news item:

With an $11 million weekend, "Finding Nemo" pulled its total haul to $274.9 million, passing "The Matrix Reloaded" as the top-grossing movie so far this year. "Finding Nemo" also passed "Shrek" to become No. 2 on the all-time list for animated movies, second only to "The Lion King," which grossed $328.5 million.


Will it actually beat Lion King? It probably won't, but it's numbers are still very impressive. Its also interesting that, so far, a G Rated film is the number one film of the year. Good job Nemo!

Doesn't affect the quality but it can definitely affect the potential audience. In the case of Nemo the rating didn't affect anything but imgaine the day one of these Pixar films gets a PG rating

I didn't even think about the different prices of tickets!!!!! WOW! How long did Lion King take to reach it's 300million mark?

Lion King reached $300 million when it was re-promoted and added back to theaters near the end of the year, in December, so about 6 months after its theatrical debut.

Then maybe Nemo is doing better than Lion King. I don't see Nemo leaving theaters soon (before the end of summer anyway). Oh, I forgot: What was the name of the blue fish whose voice is Ellen? I was in the pet store today and saw Nemo, but I didn't see the other fish and I asked and we both were stumpted at the moment and it hasn't left my head yet.

I finally watched "Nemo" today, and I thought it was great... but, while the 3D fish is doing big business, the hand-drawn "Sinbad" bombed, as with "Atlantis", "Treasure Planet", "Spirit", and on...

That's very sad to say, but this is the ultimate dead knell for tradicional animation. Ok, we still have "Brother Bear" and "Home on the Range", but I don't think they will change the executives minds. This is depressing... I just wish "Brother Bear" does well... but I can't deny I would be a little happy if "Incredibles" bombs... Sorry guys, but I just can't stand this 3D-craze anymore... SAVE 2-D ANIMATION!!!

In adjusted dollars Nemo probably isn't that close to Lion King. Movie ticket prices were cheaper back when that came out.

I completely disagree.
When it comes down to it I believe the audience will respond to the story. I'm not gonna pretend that Nemo would be doing as well if it were done 2D, but I do think it would have been extremely successful based on the fact that it's Disney and the storyline is fantastic. I think the look of Nemo leads to repeat viewings which will keep pusing it's take higher and higher.

Sure CG animation is pretty to look at and we've seen some amazing things done in the last couple years. But the bottom line is if it's a good story it'll do well regardless...and all the pretty CG effcts won't save a dull, listless storyline.

i dont think 2-D is dead if Sinbad bombs, i just think Dreamworks animation will bomb cause it all look the same sinbad looks like moses the guy from road to el dorado, antz, and spirit never changes so it gets boring. after seen Spirit i was like Dreamwork sucks! Shrek meets pocahontas II with a ugly soundtrack. animation sucked i liked the grass though

I don't think 2-D is dead, but I would like to see BB suceed and TI bomb... I mean I don't want TI to bomb, but I wouldn't be upset if it did, for the reasons Joe said... Open disney's eyes as well as the public, because face it everyone can say story story story all they want, but it is really the CGI that is bringing them in, allowing them to enjoy the story.

By the way, I too think story is very important, I am not all that impressed with high tech effects, although the effects in FD2 were pretty amazing. Matrix No story to much high tech effects. (those are the ones beyond neccessary good special effects )

Rather than have The Incredibles do poorly, I'd rather have some other high profile CG project do poorly. Maybe Shrek 2?

I liked the Matrix Reloaded, it did have a plot, its just that it is the middle part of the story, thats all. And you can't really criticize any futuristic scifi flicks for having 'too many effects' as they usually take place in world or times that require those effects to effectively tell that story.

What is FD2 anyway??

Final Destination 2, hits shelves latyer this month! whoo hoo! as does Dare Devil.

I haven't seen Matrix Reloaded, but fans of the movie that I've talked to, as well as critics, have all told me is has no real story, but the effects were worth watching in themselves.

In fact I can quote someone, though I'm not sure who, as saying "Go and see Matrix Reloaded, not for the story , but for the effects", it was some film critic.

Though, I haven't seen it myself, and maybe shoudn't have mention it, though I have seen the first one.
