Platinum fading out

Post by Prince Phillip »

I keep hearing people say that they think the platinum line is being faded out, starting with Sleeping Beauty.

I believe I've heard 2099net say this on several occassions. (I apologize if I've pointed the finger at the wrong person but I am tired and don't feel like going through half a million posts trying to find out who exactly) I just want to know why they would say this?

Sleeping Beauty was going to be released this year and it wasn't until May first that it was officially added to the Platinum list. They said new schedule would not start until may 2004, after TLK. Well, thet could have always pushed back SB again, to make it May Platinum, but I think they know that would not fly.

I personally do not see them fading it out before all the titles are released. They really have something going and I just don't see them dissolving it, not that it is impossable, I thnik we all know not to put anything past the execs...

Anyway, I forgot where I was going with this... or maybe I just said all I needed to say :? .

...eyes getting heavy... motor functions slowing... well for all you guys that are still on, I'm leaving now, but hopefully this will give you something to talk about  .

Platinum Collection means Disney's most treasured work and lots of money (for the studio). I don't see any reason for Disney to drop it!

I don't think that they will stop releasing the discs and content. I'm sure all future 2 disc editions will contain just as much content as "Snow White" (or alternatively just as much 'fluff' as Beauty and the Beast).

I just think that the actual term 'Platinum Collection' is somewhat redundant now that their 'Gold Collection' branding has been dropped. Logically it doesn't make sense that they would drop 'Gold' but keep 'Platinum' (especially since - sadly - a lot of ordinary people on the street don't actually know what Platinum is exactly).

I always thought it was a stupid branding, but they sort of marketed themselves into a corner - the 'standard' Disney releases couldn't be marketed as 'silver' as they would discourage sales. And their 'super special' releases had to be more valuable than gold. Personally I think the 'Gold' collection should have remained and the 'Platinum' titles be branded 'Diamond Collection'.

I think it is telling that Sleeping Beauty is apparently not being branded as a 'Platinum Collection' but a 'Special Edition'. I don't care what they say about the start of the new 'Platinum' schedule - it wouldn't take much to change the package design to have the 'Platinum' bar across the top. Why does it have to wait until next May to start when they have a 2 disc set 'in the can'.

Is the announcement really (to paraphrase) "We're adding Sleeping Beauty to the list, but you'll have to wait at least 4 or 5 years until you can pick that up?" - what's the point, what does that achive?

Being as they seem to be adding the standard Platinum supplements (such as a new 'pop' music video of a song from the film) why are they not making the quick and painless change the packaging? They've already changed the actual cover image two or three times! Personally I think these design changes without changing the top banner are enough evidence in itself.

Plus look at the Disney video release schedule here it has logos for two Disney home video brands "The Walt Disney Film Classic Collection" and "Walt Disney Treasures". No mention of the "Platinum Collection" somthing you think that they would be keen to promote being at it's their showcase release(s). And the main Disney DVD and Video page here lists "The Lion King" only as a "Special Edition" while their Official Lion King homepage here has no mention of Platinum anywhere.

"Snow White's" page has Platinum in the actual title here. "Beauty and the Beast's" page has Platinum in the blurb here. This year's "Lion King" has no mention of Platinum anywhere (apart from the cover shot of course) here.

They certainly seem to be downplaying the Platinum brand. I rest my case.

Nowhere else in the world has the 'Platinum' brand for these Disney releases, because we never had the 'Gold collection'. Well now you American's don't have the 'Gold Collection' either!
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I'm not sure, 2099net puts up a good case but that would mean only 3 films have the "Platinum" title and that just seems pointless. Disney are known for changing their marketing very quickly though and SB is just called a "Special Edition". Who knows?

I'm still holding out on SB until I get some sort of confirmation or press release from Disney regarding the Platinum status.

I think it's possible that they'd fade out the nomenclature, as 2099net's point is. Or it might just be that they've already put Sleeping Beauty together as a "Special Edition" and every one of these 2-disc Platinum Editions from henceforth will be called "Platinum Edition."

It does seem like we the fans refer to the "Platinum" line a heck of a lot more than Disney does themselves. Their ads for Platinum DVDs always specify "Special Edition" Cut, even their schedules and press materials downplay the "Platinum" name. Maybe just to make it less redundant than a "Special Edition AND Platinum Edition." If I were Disney, I'd make it clearer that the 10 -- now 14 -- titles in the collection were getting the ultimate treatment and distinguish between these releases and others.

They dont seem smart enough to realise that this sort of confusion will more than likely effect sales. I think if Disney goes public about their upcoming plans for future releases, than they have an obligation to their supporters to stick by their statements. I've started my Platinum collection already and I hope to continue it. I will be upset if Disney once again decides to make modification. I never understood why this company feels the need to complicate their releases to such extents. Its extremely annoying.

I don't care if Disney keeps the Platinum label or not as long as they keep doing two disk sets with extras. :D

Personally, I like the idea of the Platinum title, labeling the crem de la crem of disney, because I think they should all get 2 disc sets, but it is also nice to have that label, especially if you really don't know that much about disney, or haven't really seen the movies, and want to get into them, it gives you a place to start. However, I don't approve of the way that they picked the movies. I would chose ones that were truely exemplorary or unique/special in some way.

I think I am going to start another thread, where I am going to list my platinum choices, and you all can also list yours :) . It is something I wanted to post pretty much since I've joined, but this thread has kinda just paved the way for it...

I voted for 'I hope not'.
I was going to go and explain why, but I don't think anyone would care :P

Besides of which, Bella Notte summed it up nicely for me:

Nothing to add to that!
Just happy to keep buying them as long as they keep releasing them...
